Cut off from memories of sexual abuse, compelled to relive what she cannot remember, she is driven to constantly re-invent herself. Unable to learn from experience, she repeats the cycle time and again: optimism giving way to despair, then hope once more restored. Taken together these stories portray the inner life of a dissociated personality while bringing to light those character strengths which suggest a movement toward recovery.

Book Light Emitting Diodes 2nd Edition 2006

Download or read book Light Emitting Diodes 2nd Edition 2006 written by E. Fred Schubert and published by E. Fred Schubert. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised and fully updated, the Second Edition of this textbook offers a comprehensive explanation of the technology and physics of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) such as infrared, visible-spectrum, ultraviolet, and white LEDs made from III–V semiconductors. The elementary properties of LEDs such as electrical and optical characteristics are reviewed, followed by the analysis of advanced device structures. With nine additional chapters, the treatment of LEDs has been vastly expanded, including new material on device packaging, reflectors, UV LEDs, III–V nitride materials, solid-state sources for illumination applications, and junction temperature. Radiative and non-radiative recombination dynamics, methods for improving light extraction, high-efficiency and high-power device designs, white-light emitters with wavelength-converting phosphor materials, optical reflectors, and spontaneous recombination in resonant-cavity structures, are discussed in detail. Fields related to solid-state lighting such as human vision, photometry, colorimetry, and color rendering are covered beyond the introductory level provided in the first edition. The applications of infrared and visible spectrum LEDs in silica fiber, plastic fiber, and free-space communication are also discussed. Semiconductor material data, device design data, and analytic formulae governing LED operation are provided. With exercises, solutions and illustrative examples, this textbook will be of interest to scientists and engineers working on LEDs, and to graduate students in electrical engineering, applied physics, and materials science.

This international bestselling book has helped hundreds of thousands of people all over the world to create a life that is in deep alignment with their soul. "Light Is The New Black is an inspiring book with a message that is so needed right now. Rebecca courageously guides us to turn our lights on and follow the daily calls of our soul so we can all light up the world with our authentic spirit.” – Sonia Choquette, bestselling author of The Answer is Simple ANSWER THE CALL OF YOUR SOUL AND WORK YOUR LIGHT Your inner light is your soul and it is guiding you every moment of every day. Light Is the New Black is for those who agreed to be here at this time in history to answer the call of their soul and work their light. Rebecca Campbell had her first awakening when she was a teenager, but without anyone to guide her, she ignored her soul's callings and dimmed her light in order to fit in. Then, just before her 30th birthday, the life she had so consciously created began to crumble around her. It was as if the Universe had turned off all the lights, so she had no choice but to rediscover her own. In this inspirational book, Rebecca shares her own healing journey, alongside practical tools to help you reconnect with the core of your being, and channelled messages from the Universe. Once you rediscover what you already know at soul level, you can create a life that is in divine alignment, discover your soul gifts, and offer the world something that only you can give. “When I first woke up to the callings of my soul, I lacked the courage, confidence, inner support, and practical tools not just to hear the callings of my soul, but to let them truly lead my life. There were pieces missing, a journey needed to be taken. I called upon the Universe and spiritual teachers to support me. This book is the result of that journey. You can read it in one sitting, one chapter a day, or pick a page at random for an instant hit of guidance. Throughout you will find ‘Work Your Light’ exercises, mantras, and affirmations. I created these with the intention of guiding you not only to hear the callings of your soul, but to act on them too... I pray that you discover the authentic gift to the world that you already are and choose to serve the world by being You. Follow what lights you up and you will light up the world. So much love, Rebecca x

Book The Semiotics of Light and Shadows

Download or read book The Semiotics of Light and Shadows written by Piotr Sadowski and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lighting and shadows are used within a range of art forms to create aesthetic effects. Piotr Sadowski's study of light and shadow in Weimar cinema and contemporaneous visual arts is underpinned by the evolutionary semiotic theories of indexicality and iconicity. These theories explain the unique communicative and emotive power of light and shadow when used in contemporary indexical media including the shadow theatre, silhouette portraits, camera obscura, photography and film. In particular, Sadowski highlights the aesthetic and emotional significance of shadows. The 'cast shadow', as an indexical sign, maintains a physical connection with its near-present referent, such as a hidden person, stimulating a viewer's imagination and provoking responses including anxiety or curiosity. The 'cinematic shadow' plays a stylistic role, by enhancing image texture, depth of field, and tonal contrast of cinematic moments. Such enhancements are especially important in monochromatic films, and Sadowski interweaves the book with accounts of seminal Weimar cinema moments. Sadowski's book is distinctive for combining historical materials and theoretical approaches to develop a deeper understanding of Weimar cinema and other contemporary art forms. The Semiotics of Light and Shadows is an ideal resource for both scholars and students working in linguistics, semiotics, film, media, and visual arts.

Book Eternal light and earthly concerns

Download or read book Eternal light and earthly concerns written by Paul Fouracre and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early Christianity it was established that every church should have a light burning on the altar at all times. In this unique study, Eternal light and earthly concerns, looks at the material and social consequences of maintaining these ‘eternal’ lights. It investigates how the cost of lighting was met across western Europe throughout the whole of the Middle Ages, revealing the social organisation that was built up around maintaining the lights in the belief that burning them reduced the time spent in Purgatory. When that belief collapsed in the Reformation the eternal lights were summarily extinguished. The history of the lights thus offers not only a new account of change in medieval Europe, but also a sustained examination of the relationship between materiality and belief.
