The project was designed to serve a number of purposes: (a) to operate an archaeological field school for the training of students and the interested public; (b) to assess the nature and extent of cultural resources at the site and to serve as a guide for any future research that may be undertaken; and (c) to establish a foundation for the BLM's public interpretation program at the site. The five seasons of fieldwork were conducted from 1990 to 1994 during the summer and fall. This report describes the results of the archaeological excavations and historical records search conducted by the AHRI at the Fort Craig National Historic site.

Book Papermaking with Garden Plants Common Weeds

Download or read book Papermaking with Garden Plants Common Weeds written by Helen Hiebert and published by Storey Publishing. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handmade paper has a unique texture and an individual quality that makes it not only a surface to write or print on, but also an object of beauty. With a small investment in equipment (or the supplies to make it from scratch), a small harvest of backyard weeds or garden plants, and the guidance of papermaking expert Helen Hiebert, anyone can make exquisite papers right in the home kitchen. HiebertÕs basic papermaking techniques, laid out in illustrated step-by-step instructions, make it easy to blend and shape a variety of organic papers from such common plants as hosta, milkweed, and thistledown, as well as the more unusual pineapple, yucca, and seaweed. She describes how to collect, harvest, and process the plant fibers and then create sheets using both Western and Japanese techniques. Inspired by the community of papermaking artists she is a part of, Hiebert features profiles of papermakers from around the world, highlighting their individual tips and techniques. She also includes project instructions for using handmade paper to create one-of-a-kind cards and envelopes, multi-paneled lampshades, and accordion-fold books. There are also instructions for embellishing techniques such as adding flower petals, creating collages, and dyeing with richly colored walnut shells. From plant to finished paper, the simple completeness and beauty of Papermaking with Garden Plants & Common Weeds will appeal to craftspeople, gardeners, environmentalists, teachers, and anyone who enjoys creating from nature.

Book American Iron Hand Presses

Download or read book American Iron Hand Presses written by Stephen O. Saxe and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its early 15th cent. until the start of the 19th cent., the methods and equipment of printing changed remarkably little. The essential techniques of punch, matrix, type mould and handset type remained unaltered for a total of 350 years. Then came the 19th cent. Iron was replacing wood and inventors were busy finding new ways to speed up work that had been done by hand. In the printing field the cylinder press came early in the century but parallel with this invention was the development of the iron hand press. The inventors and entrepreneurs of the era provided an extensive selection of presses from which to to choose. Here is the story of the iron hand press in North Amer. from its first appearance to final manufacture, along with wood engravings.

Book When Technology Fails

Download or read book When Technology Fails written by Matthew R. Stein and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's never been a better time to "be prepared." Matthew Stein's comprehensive primer on sustainable living skills--from food and water to shelter and energy to first-aid and crisis-management skills--prepares you to embark on the path toward sustainability. But unlike any other book, Stein not only shows you how to live "green" in seemingly stable times, but to live in the face of potential disasters, lasting days or years, coming in the form of social upheaval, economic meltdown, or environmental catastrophe. When Technology Fails covers the gamut. You'll learn how to start a fire and keep warm if you've been left temporarily homeless, as well as the basics of installing a renewable energy system for your home or business. You'll learn how to find and sterilize water in the face of utility failure, as well as practical information for dealing with water-quality issues even when the public tap water is still flowing. You'll learn alternative techniques for healing equally suited to an era of profit-driven malpractice as to situations of social calamity. Each chapter (a survey of the risks to the status quo; supplies and preparation for short- and long-term emergencies; emergency measures for survival; water; food; shelter; clothing; first aid, low-tech medicine, and healing; energy, heat, and power; metalworking; utensils and storage; low-tech chemistry; and engineering, machines, and materials) offers the same approach, describing skills for self-reliance in good times and bad. Fully revised and expanded--the first edition was written pre-9/11 and pre-Katrina, when few Americans took the risk of social disruption seriously--When Technology Fails ends on a positive, proactive note with a new chapter on "Making the Shift to Sustainability," which offers practical suggestions for changing our world on personal, community and global levels.

Book Practicing Archaeology

Download or read book Practicing Archaeology written by Thomas W. Neumann and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive text and reference book addresses the questions and problems of cultural resources archaeology for undergraduate and graduate students and practicing archaeologists. Neumann, Sanford, and Neumann use their decades of field experience to discuss in great detail the complex processes involved in conducting a cultural resources management (CRM) project. Dealing with everything from law to logistics, archival research to artifact analysis, project proposals to report production, they provide an invaluable sourcebook for archaeologists who do contract archaeology. After introducing the legal and ethical aspects of CRM and stakeholder engagement, the authors describe the processes of designing a proposal and contracting for work, doing background research, conducting assessment, testing, mitigation work (Phase I, II, and III), laboratory analysis, and preparing reports for project sponsors. The volume’s emphasis on practical problems, use of extensive examples, and detailed advice on a host of subjects make it an ideal manual for archaeologists and field schools. This revised and expanded third edition of Practicing Archaeology: A Manual for Cultural Resources Archaeology updates Federal and state contracting protocols and covers preparing safety plans for occupational hazards, organization of an archaeology laboratory, use of electronic technology and digital media, advice on field and personnel management, and how to make a living doing cultural resources archaeology.
