Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Browning Perhaps the most striking characteristic alike of Browning's personal character and of his poetry is his intense, individuality, his independence of external influences. Sociable and affectionate, and including among his friends men and women of strong personality, his nature nevertheless remained little affected by contact with others. Only his wife touched the essentials in his character; and her influence did not so much modify his personality as awaken in it emotions and powers previously undeveloped, give it the atmosphere of finest sympathy and the stimulus of deepest feeling which made it more magnificently itself. And this same independence marks Browning's work. His intellectual sympathies were singularly wide; his culture was cosmopolitan, though most friendly to the influences of his beloved Italy; painting, music, history, politics, all fascinated him, and his literary sympathies, despite certain marked insensibilities, were rich and varied. But all these influences merely gave new force to his genius without definitely informing its temper. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Poetic and Dramatic Works of Robert Browning Miss Barrett was an invalid, guarded with the greatest care, and Browning, in urging marriage upon her, met with all the obstacles which the circumstances raised. He confronted indeed the indomitable refusal of Miss Barrett's father. A physician had held out hopes that a removal to Italy would give the invalid a chance to regain some degree of health, but Mr. Barrett, for some not very clear reason, refused h'm consent to her taking the journey with her brother. It was then that Browning, who can readily be conceived of as a masterful man, won Miss Barrett's consent to a sudden and clandestine marriage, and a journey to Italy as his wife. When she had finally assented to this course, writes Mrs. Orr, she took a preparatory step which, in so far as it was known, must itself have been sufficiently startling to those about her; she drove to Regent's Park, and when there, stepped out of the carriage and on to the grass. I do not know how long she stood - probably only for a moment; but I well remember hearing that when, after so long an interval. She felt earth under her feet and air about her, the sensation was almost bewilderingly strange. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Letters of Robert Browning Such letters of Mr. Browning's as appear, whole or in part, in the present volume have been in most cases given to me by the persons to whom they were addressed, or copied by Miss Browning from the originals under her care; but I owe to the daughter of the Rev. W. J. Fox - Mrs. BridellFox - those written to her father and to Miss Flower, the two interesting extracts from her father's correspondence with herself, and Mr. Browning's note to Mr. Robertson. For my general material I have been largely indebted to Miss Browning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Browning: Chief Poet of the Age I AM gratified to find that this book has been so favourably received as to call for a second edition; a circumstance which has afforded me the opportunity of correcting some errors, and of somewhat enlarging the scope of the work, and thereby adding, I would fain hope, to its usefulness. My main purpose has been to offer a sort of manual for beginners in the study of Browning. There are various treatises in existence dealing cri tically with the poems; but none, it seemed to me, specially intended as a guide to beginners. My object is, primarily, to call attention to the simplest of the poems, while remarking on the leading characteristics of the poet's genius, in the hope that the reader may be induced thereby to study the complete works of Robert Browning. Of course, for more advanced students, the Handbook of Mrs. Orr is fire: guide to the full understanding of Browning. Book Little Journeys to the Homes of English Authors

Download or read book Little Journeys to the Homes of English Authors written by Elbert Hubbard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-25 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Little Journeys to the Homes of English Authors: Robert Browning Browning's swarthy complexion, and the fine poise of the man - the entire absence of nerves, as often shown in the savage - seemed to carry out the idea that his was a peculiar pedigree. In his youth, when his hair was as black as the raven's wing and coarse as a horse-tail, and his complexion mahogany, the te port that he was a Creole found ready credence. And so did this gossip of mixed parentage follow him that Mrs. Sutherland Orr, in her biography, takes an entire chapter to prove that in Robert Browning's veins there flowed neither Indian nor Negro blood. Dr. Furnivall, however, explains that Browning's grandmother on his father's side came from the West Indies, that nothing is known of her family history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select Poems of Robert Browning The publishers have desired that this book should be included in the series Of English Classics edited by me, and that my name should be put first on the title-page; but I may say here in the preface that the better part - in every sense - Of the work has been done by Miss Hersey, who knows tenfold more about Browning than I do. She originated the plan, selected the poems, prepared the Introduction, and wrote more than half Of the notes. I have carefully collated the earlier and later texts Of the poems (see especially the various readings of T lze Lost Lead er, Coila'e Roland, and Ftp/5a Passes, none of which appear in their later form in the American editions), and have revised and filled out the Notes. Download or read book Robert Browning and Alfred Domett Classic Reprint written by Frederic G. Kenyon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Robert Browning and Alfred Domett It is not claimed that the publication of these letters is a matter of universal interest, or indeed that they are likely to interest more than a somewhat Special class of readers. Browning's letters were in no sense literary compositions, nor have they the unconscious literary gift which distin guishes the letters, natural and unstudied though they be, of a very few such writers as fitzgerald and Charles Lamb. They serve, however - and serve all the more by reason of Browning's deliberate destruction of his intimate correspondence - to illus trate the character of one who has every thing to gain by being known in all the richness of a noble and a sympathetic nature. It is to those who find a special appeal to them in Browning's poetry, and to those who care to learn something of the character of one of the great poets of age. Book My Last Duchess Unabridged

Download or read book My Last Duchess Unabridged written by Robert Browning and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2024-01-06 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "My Last Duchess (Unabridged)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. "My Last Duchess" is a poem, frequently anthologised as an example of the dramatic monologue. It first appeared in 1842 in Browning's Dramatic Lyrics. The poem is written in 28 rhymed couplets of iambic pentameter. The poem is set during the late Italian Renaissance. The speaker (presumably the Duke of Ferrara) is giving the emissary of the family of his prospective new wife (presumably a third or fourth since Browning could have easily written 'second' but did not do so) a tour of the artworks in his home. He draws a curtain to reveal a painting of a woman, explaining that it is a portrait of his late wife; he invites his guest to sit and look at the painting. Robert Browning (1812 - 1889) was an English poet and playwright whose mastery of dramatic verse, and in particular the dramatic monologue, made him one of the foremost Victorian poets. His poems are known for their irony, characterization, dark humor, social commentary, historical settings, and challenging vocabulary and syntax. The speakers in his poems are often musicians or painters whose work functions as a metaphor for poetry.
