Book A Few Letters and Speeches of the Late Civil War Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Few Letters and Speeches of the Late Civil War Classic Reprint written by August Belmont and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Few Letters and Speeches of the Late Civil War This pamphlet, which is privately printed, contains a few letters, chosen from among hundreds, and a few speeches, selected out of many, that were written or uttered by their author during the time that he has had the honor to be intrusted with an official position in the Democratic party - namely, the Chairmanship of its National Committee. It was a circumstance incident to any faithful discharge of that responsible duty, during so exciting and momentous an era in the history of the United States as that through which they have but lately passed or are passing, that his opinions and conduct should be often misrepresented and sometimes misunderstood. The following pages will suffice to correct such errors, should they ever approach a lodgment in the minds of those with whom alone such errors now can be of any importance to him, - his children, and his personal or political friends; and will disclose to such of these as care to concern themselves about the matter, the ends which, as a citizen and as a member of a noble and time-honored party he has had in view, as well as something of the means by which, in his humble sphere and imperfect way, he has striven to attain them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters Written During the Civil War, 1861-1865 The Second Massachusetts Infantry Regiment was organized in April, 1861, immediately after the firing on Fort Sumter. Colonel George H. Gordon, Lieutenant-Colonel George L. Andrews and Major Wilder Dwight were the active spirits in creating the organization and in securing the acceptance of the regiment by the Secretary of War prior to the first call for troops by President Lincoln, May 4, 1861. The regiment was mustered into the military service of the United States in the month of May, 1861, at Camp Andrew, West Roxbury. It remained at this camp for drill and instruction about two months, and left Boston for the seat of War in Virginia, July 8, 1861. These letters, written to members of my family, record my experiences as an officer of this regiment during its term of service, from May, 1861, to July, 1865. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Civil War Letters, 1861 to 1865 Letter I. Camp Randall, Madison, Wis., January 19, 1862. Dear Mother: - We arrived here twelve o'clock Friday night, went to a hotel and got something to eat and stopped there until morning, when we went to the Capitol and were mustered into the United States service, and drew our uniforms, and now we are full fledged volunteer soldiers of Uncle Sam, and most of the Boys think now that they could whip the whole Southern Army, if they only had a chance. I saw Guy Myers here; his regiment has gone to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; he was sick in the hospital and was left behind. Guy was a little surprised to see Sam and me. Sam and myself are both well, and feel as big as the rest of the boys in our new uniforms. I guess I will close this time, so will say Good Bye. Say, mother, as this is my first letter as a Soldier Boy put it away and keep it until I come home. Direct your letters to Camp Randall, Madison, Wisconsin, care of Captain McGowen. I do not know the letter of our Company yet; we will be in the 17th Regiment. Well Good Bye. Write soon. Affectionately, your boy, Letter II. Pittsburg Landing, Tenn., April 3, 1862. Dear Mother: - Our regiment left St. Louis March 26 on the steamer Imperial and went down the Mississippi to Cairo, Illinois, then up the Ohio to the Tennessee, and from there up the river to what they call here Pittsburg Landing. Cannot see much of a landing, only one log house. However we are back from the Landing about three miles and fixing our camp. There are four other regiments in our brigade, the 16th Wisconsin, 4th Kentucky and the 20th Missouri, besides ours. General McArthur commands the brigade and General Grant commands the whole army. Say, mother, it begins to look more like business than it did while, we were in camp up North and sometimes I wish I was up North now instead of here, but here I am and here I will stay, I suppose. Say, mother, I don't like old Captain McGowen at all; he is a cross old bear. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of a Family During the War for the Union 1861-1865, Vol. 1 These few happen to have been saved from a much larger number, which, coming almost daily at times from the brother (Charles), at the Headquarters of the Army of the Potomac, and the sisters in Hospital service, were carefully filed by the eldest sister, Abby, in orderly succession, and, when the home was broken up, were stored in the Morrell warehouse in New York. There, later, with all our Mother's household possessions, they were destroyed by fire, to the deep and lasting regret of all who knew the writers and the times they had passed through. Dr. Prentiss, our long-time friend and pastor, writes: "The destruction of Charley's letters from the front in the Morrell fire was an irreparable loss, and gave me, I remember, a real shock, for I knew how precious they would have been, sooner or later, not in your family history only, but in the inner personal history of the war." This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters From Port Royal, Written at the Time of the Civil War With Commodore Dupont's capture, on November 7, 1861, of two earth forts which the rebels had recently thrown up at Hilton Head and Bay Point, South Caro lina, the Sea Island region became Union territory. The planters and their families having ed precipi fately, the United States Government found itself in possession of almost everything that had been theirs, the two chief items being the largest cotton crop ever yet raised there, nearly ready for exporting, and several hundred demoralized, destitute slaves, the number of whom was daily being increased by refugees and returned fugitives. The negroes were plainly a burden some problem, the cotton a valuable piece of property. The first thing to do was obvious, and fortunately the same cotton-agents who were despatched by the authorities at Washington to collect and ship the pro perty were able, by employing negroes for the purpose, to make a beginning towards solving the problem. Book Recollections of the Civil War

Download or read book Recollections of the Civil War written by Mason Whiting Tyler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of the Civil War: With Many Original Diary Entries and Letters Written From the Seat of War, and With Annotated References A the time of his death, my father was nearing the completion of a first draft of his manuscript, which, if he had lived, would have been continued to the conclusion of the war, and then carefully revised in the light of his lifelong study of the historical whole, we have gained much that might not have survived a careful revision. In this first written expression of his recollections and studies of the War time, while as yet he had not a perspective of the book as a whole, his reminiscent moods have led him back over those paths primarily; where his interest was most intense, and the depth of the impressions and intensity of the feelings have been the impulses which for the most part determined what the subjects should be and how much should be said of them. While not a history as a whole, events so selected and so related have a peculiar historical value of their own. There are many histories of the war and autobiographies of great generals, but autobiographies of the soldier in the camp and in the ranks are few. The life of the nation has overshadowed for the time the lives of the men who saved the nation; but it is the men for whom the nation is worth saving, and whose lives in the war are mere incidents of histories, who are the subject of this unfinished story by one of the soldiers. Book Letters of Robert Walker

Download or read book Letters of Robert Walker written by Robert Walker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of Robert Walker: A Soldier in the Civil War of 1861-1865 In order to preserve these letters, tenderly kept by my mother for fifty-four years, up to the time of her death on January 8th, 1916, I am now having them published. The list is incomplete, as many of the letters were destroyed, but enough remain to make an interesting personal account. They are the letters of a young man with a young man's outlook on life, but they contain a great deal of historical information also. It is interesting to notice how the later letters are lacking in all nonsense, and as the war grows more fierce nothing but military news is given. The letter of March 14th, 1863, shows discouragement. There are also, in the letters indications of uncertainty regarding mail. Mrs. Martha Walker-West, of Logan, Ohio, the youngest and only living member of the immediate family, has written a short biography of the author. A print from the last photograph of the author is given on the front page. This was taken after a long hard march just before the fatal battle. The poem in the back of the book was sent home in a letter, words and music printed on a single sheet of paper. This little volume is given to friends in loving remembrance of my mother, whose life was saddened by the early death of her brother. Book First Blows of the Civil War

Download or read book First Blows of the Civil War written by James S. Pike and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Blows of the Civil War: The Ten Years of Preliminary Conflict in United States; From 1850 to 1860; A Contemporaneous Exposition; Progress of the Struggle Shown by Public Records and Private Correspondence While the following contemporaneous exposition does not undertake to give an exhaustive history of the subjects with which it deals, but presents rather, a compilation of historic materials, it is thought it may possess an interest and an atmosphere of its own that may commend it to public notice. It especially treats of the course of public events in this country, bearing on the questions of disunion and slavery, during the ten or eleven years immediately preceding the civil war. It offers a picture of the strenuous exertions of the slaveholders to annex Cuba and to plant slavery in the Territories, or, failing in that, to accomplish secession; and of the equally determined efforts of the people of the Free States to prevent the execution of those purposes. The leading men of the country, with their vivid hopes, fears, and designs, all pass in rapid re view before the reader. The parties engaged in that great struggle are here brought face to face, and their statements, arguments, objects, and methods are, it is believed, delineated with sufficient distinctness to show the progress of the great question involved, through the several years during which the controversy was carried on. We must observe that this record is drawn from a great mass of material, which it has been necessary to sift and greatly abridge, in order to bring the work within reasonable compass. The reader will require this explanation in order to understand some of the private correspondence, which refers to events and discussions then taking place, but not herein recorded. Many of the topics thus referred to, not being germane to our present purpose, have been set aside, and nowhere appear in the text.
