Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dodge's Geography of Utah: Utah as a Whole; The Growth and Development of Cities; Statistics and Aids to Teachers Ome Geography is usually the first work to be taken up in any study of geography H because beginning students need to know first the geography of the locality in which they live, in which they are most interested, and with which they are most familiar from personal experience. The results gained from a study of the region. They can see gives them the ability to understand remote regions that can only be pictured or described to them. Because our own home locality is of most interest to us is also a reason why we need to know it better than we need to know any other region of the world. Hence at some time during the school course it is most valuable to make a careful study of the state or group of states in which we live that we may have a better understanding of the geography about us than we can get from the necessarily brief accounts given in a text-book of geography. In a text-book of geography we study the relation of one state or group of states to the whole country of which our home region is a part, and our commercial relations to the world as a whole. It follows that in such a treatment the characteristics that distinguish our own home regions must largely be lost to sight in the consideration of the great features that distinguish the country as a whole. In a special text-book devoted to one state or group of states we can learn more about our own region, its important surface features, its climate, the occupations of its people, its products, its local commerce, its history, its chief cities, and many other features of great interest to us. Hence we need to make a special study of our home locality after we have studied the larger region of which it is an important part. A local geography is not only valuable for study in school that we may know well the region about us, but it is valuable also as a reference volume to which we can refer for facts about our own state in our homes whenever in our reading or conversation some question arises concerning our own state which needs to be answered at once. Book excerpt: Railroads, tourism, and government bureaucracy combined to create modern religion in the American West, argues David Walker in this innovative study of Mormonism's ascendency in the railroad era. The center of his story is Corinne, Utah—an end-of-the-track, hell-on-wheels railroad town founded by anti-Mormon businessmen. In the disputes over this town's frontier survival, Walker discovers intense efforts by a variety of theological, political, and economic interest groups to challenge or secure Mormonism's standing in the West. Though Corinne's founders hoped to leverage industrial capital to overthrow Mormon theocracy, the town became the site of a very different dream. Economic and political victory in the West required the production of knowledge about different religious groups settling in its lands. As ordinary Americans advanced their own theories about Mormondom, they contributed to the rise of religion itself as a category of popular and scholarly imagination. At the same time, new and advantageous railroad-related alliances catalyzed LDS Church officials to build increasingly dynamic religious institutions. Through scrupulous research and wide-ranging theoretical engagement, Walker shows that western railroads did not eradicate or diminish Mormon power. To the contrary, railroad promoters helped establish Mormonism as a normative American religion.

Book The Resources and Attractions of Utah as They Exist Today

Download or read book The Resources and Attractions of Utah as They Exist Today written by H. L. A. Culmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Resources and Attractions of Utah as They Exist Today: Set Forth for the Enquiring Public, Especially for the Midwinter Fair, California, 1894 We have in Utah, or more particularly, in the Great Salt Lake Basin, a climate peculiarly local, and of a quality conducive to good health and long life. It possesses the dryness, elevation and tonicity of the air essential to the comfort and enjoyment of the hale as well as to the restoration of the invalid. Added to the other manifold blessings enjoyed by those who dwell amid the valleys and mountains of Utah, they can, when in health, work harder and accomplish more with less wear and tear than anywhere else on the habitable globe. With a fair endow ment of brains and working capital they can think faster; with brawny arms and inherent energy they can expend more force with less fatigue, and render by sundown a day and a quarter for a day's work without unusual effort. They can eat and assimi late more, and sleep better in Utah than the average man else where; in brief, under the stimulus of local conditions of climate, they can return - other things being equal - in thought and force, more and better work than the average of mankind in less fortunately endowed localities. The property of exhilaration, born of purity and rarity of our atmosphere, is an ever constant factor. Coming here from other localities, there is an increase in the force of circulation and in the normal oxidation of the blood. Book Mapping And Imagination In The Great Basin

Download or read book Mapping And Imagination In The Great Basin written by Richard V. Francaviglia and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2005-03-07 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Basin was the last region of continental North America to be explored and mapped, and it remained largely a mystery to Euro-Americans until well into the nineteenth century. In Mapping and Imagination in the Great Basin, geographer-historian Richard Francaviglia shows how the Great Basin gradually emerged from its “cartographic silence” as terra incognita and how this fascinating process both paralleled the development of the sciences of surveying, geology, hydrology, and cartography and reflected the changing geopolitical aspirations of the European colonial powers and the United States. Francaviglia’s interdisciplinary account of the mapping of the Great Basin combines a chronicle of the exploration of the region with a history of the art and science of cartography and of the political, economic, and cultural contexts in which maps are created. It also offers a compelling, wide-ranging discussion that combines a description of the daunting physical realities of the Great Basin with a cogent examination of the ways humans, from early Native Americans to nineteenth-century surveyors to twentieth-century highway and air travelers, have understood, defined, and organized this space, psychologically and through the medium of maps. Mapping and Imagination in the Great Basin continues Francaviglia’s insightful, richly nuanced meditation on the Great Basin landscape that began in Believing in Place.

Book Climate Forcings on Groundwater Variations in Utah and the Great Basin

Download or read book Climate Forcings on Groundwater Variations in Utah and the Great Basin written by Kirsti A. Hakala and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater levels over northern Utah have undergone a declining trend since the 19600́9s. This trend has made apparent the need to understand the relationship between climate and groundwater resources. Such necessary information is already in dire need in places such as California. At the close of 2013, California had experienced its driest year in recorded history, with severe drought continuing for the foreseeable future. Utah is the second driest state in the U.S., and therefore has been paying close attention to California0́9s current water crises. Water resource projections may prove to be one of the most vital pieces of information toward securing adequate water for those who are currently enduring such water shortages. In order to accomplish the initial research necessary for developing a fundable proposal, we requested support from the Utah State University Research Catalyst Grant to (a) evaluate a state-of-the-art climate model (its ability to assess groundwater) against statewide groundwater wells and operational groundwater models, (b) reduce climate model uncertainties, (c) conduct a study in the form of observational well site evaluations, and (d) develop strategies to effectively disseminate information on Utah0́9s future groundwater budget to water managers and policy makers. This research is now fully funded externally by the Bureau of Reclamation.
