I still have the paper, but nine years after we were married she set her trunk out to sun, and a dog got the biscuit out and ate it. A Confederate in Arkansas wanted to know if it killed the dog. I told him I thought it gave him the hydrophobia, at least he died afterwards. I was badly wounded, in my new hat, in a fight near Som erville, Tenn., Christmas week of 1863. A new hat was a rarity to a Confederate soldier in those times. In writing to me a Yankee who was in the fight wanted to know why I did not pick up another, as there were plenty lying around when they left there. Good byes had been said - the soldiers of the company were seated in the train - but on the rear platform were Captain Butler and other officers. I stood on the northwest corner of Salina street when the train began to pull out and the picture is still 'vivid to me, as that group of brave men were for a moment framed in the arch of the old station house. Captain Butler, in the strength of his young manhood, stood with bared head. His clear-cut features and yellow, curling hair shone with distinctness against the background of the car, while he held in his hand the staff of a large flag which had just been presented to him. The train started, the wind caught the folds of the flag, which fluttered above him and the other brave boys standing with him, and they were gone. It is only like a flash light picture in my memory, but as such is distinct and speaks for what it meant, for them and our country. The Syracuse Zouaves were incorporated in the Third Regiment, New York Volunteers, as Company D of that organization. As a young girl I remember hearing my mother speak Of her Civil War romance with my father and of certain letters which she had treasured during the years. After my father's death, which occurred on New Year's Day 1 908, mother again referred to the letters and said that she wished me to have them after her death. We had the joy of having her with us alert in mind and body until just before her ninetieth birth day. It was not until a few years later that the letters were discovered in an old japanned box among her effects. They have been printed exactly as written with no attempt at editing, as it is my feeling that any changes on my part would only serve to lessen their worth. AS will be readily observed in reading the letters, there are few of my mother's letters extant and the first three are signed with her sister's name. She makes her own explanation of this. As my father was a cavalry scout it is easy to understand that even the smallest impedimenta were impos'sible and it is only remarkable that mother's first four letters were*6.
