Book A Feodary Of Glastonbury Abbey Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Feodary Of Glastonbury Abbey Classic Reprint written by F. W. Weaver and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Feodary Of Glastonbury Abbey With the issue in this volume of the Feodary the Society has returned to the attack on the documentary history of Glaston bury Abbey. In this case the history is not that of a religious foundation, but rather of a great feudal landowner, whose rights and liabilities were very closely connected. Previous efforts include the printing of the Inquisition of Abbot Henry de Sully drawn up in 1189; and of the Rentalia of Abbots Ambresbury and Ford, dated 1235 - 1261, which formed Volume V of the Society's works. To this is now added a Feodary of the succeeding century. For permission to print this valuable document the Society is greatly indebted to the Curators of the Bodleian Library, and for the labour of editing to the Rev. F. W. Weaver and to Canon Mayo, of Long Burton, Dorset, who has contributed the Introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Chronicle of Glastonbury Abbey

Download or read book The Chronicle of Glastonbury Abbey written by James P. Carley and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1985 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John of Glastonbury's chronicle represents an attempt to summarise the lore and learning about Glastonbury Abbey and its past available in the fourteenth century, a body of knowledge which changed very little before the Reformation. The author drew on a large number of sources and edited these skilfully to form his narrative, while preserving the earlier text almost intact. The result is the fullest medieval account of the abbey and its legends. A translation is included, which makes the important text available in English for the first time, and the whole volume is designed as a companion to John Scott's edition and translation of William of Malmesbury's twelfth-century account of the abbey's history.

Book excerpt: A survey of the landed endowment of Glastonbury Abbey before 1066, with a history of its estates. The early history of the religious community at Glastonbury has been the subject of much speculation and imaginative writing, but there are few sources which genuinely further our knowledge of Glastonbury Abbey in the Anglo-Saxonperiod. This has resulted in a lack of serious historical research and hence the neglect of an important ecclesiastical establishment. This study brings together the evidence of royal and episcopal grants of land and combines it with material from Domesday Book, to produce a survey of the landed endowment of Glastonbury Abbey before 1066, and an analysis of the history of its Anglo-Saxon estates. Although there is too little data to formulate a complete account of the Abbey's early landholdings, the surviving evidence, collected together here, outlines a history for each place named in connection with the pre-Conquest religious house; in addition, each case helps to establish an overall framework for the life-cycle of the Anglo-Saxon estate, building on our understanding of actual conditions of tenure and of the various fortunes ecclesiastical land might experience. LESLEY ABRAMS is Lecturer in History, Brasenose College, and Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford University.

This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Society for Medieval Archaeology (established in 1957), presenting reflections on the history, development and future prospects of the discipline. The papers are drawn from a series of conferences and workshops that took place in 2007-08, in addition to a number of contributions that were commissioned especially for the volume. They range from personal commentaries on the history of the Society and the growth of the subject (see papers by David Wilson and Rosemary Cramp), to historiographical, regional and thematic overviews of major trends in the evolution and current practice of medieval archaeology. All the publications are fully refereed with the aim of publishing at the highest academic level reports on sites of national and international importance, and of encouraging the widest debate. The series’ objectives are to cover the broadest chronological and geographical range and to assemble a series of volumes which reflect the changing intellectual and technical scope of the discipline.
