Book Fatherneed

Download or read book Fatherneed written by Kyle Pruett and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2001-05-08 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fathers have always parented differently than mothers. In Fatherneed, Dr. Kyle D. Pruett shows mothers and fathers why that difference is so important to a child's physical, cognitive, and emotional development. Drawing on more than two decades of highly acclaimed research at the Yale Child Study Center, and backed up by true stories from actual families, Fatherneed is the essential how-to guide for women and men who wish to promote engaged fathering. This book will help enable fathers to give their children the skills they need to develop into happy and healthy adults. Step by step, Dr. Pruett specifically addresses what a father can do to prepare his marriage, his house, and his emotions for his child's needs, from infancy through the toddler years, childhood, adolescence, and young and mature adulthood. With advice to fathers ranging from how to speak to toddlers so that they listen, to how to avoid the common tendency to reinforce gender stereotypes in young children, to how to maintain a connection with an increasingly autonomous teenager, Fatherneed is the perfect resource for all dads-including divorced fathers, fathers of adopted children, stepfathers, and fathers of special-needs children-as well as moms who want kids who are meaningfully connected to their fathers. With wit, authority, and compassion, Dr. Pruett shows how to be sure that your child gets what only a father can provide.

Book Catastrophic Care

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Goldhill
  • Publisher : Vintage
  • Release : 2013-01-08
  • ISBN : 0307961559
  • Pages : 386 pages

Download or read book Catastrophic Care written by David Goldhill and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-01-08 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A visionary investigation that will change the way we think about health care: how and why it is failing, why expanding coverage will actually make things worse, and how our health care can be transformed into a transparent, affordable, successful system. In 2007, David Goldhill’s father died from infections acquired in a hospital, one of more than two hundred thousand avoidable deaths per year caused by medical error. The bill was enormous—and Medicare paid it. These circumstances left Goldhill angry and determined to understand how world-class technology and personnel could coexist with such carelessness—and how a business that failed so miserably could be paid in full. Catastrophic Care is the eye-opening result. Blending personal anecdotes and extensive research, Goldhill presents us with cogent, biting analysis that challenges the basic preconceptions that have shaped our thinking for decades. Contrasting the Island of health care with the Mainland of our economy, he demonstrates that high costs, excess medicine, terrible service, and medical error are the inevitable consequences of our insurance-based system. He explains why policy efforts to fix these problems have invariably produced perverse results, and how the new Affordable Care Act is more likely to deepen than to solve these issues. Goldhill steps outside the incremental and wonkish debates to question the conventional wisdom blinding us to more fundamental issues. He proposes a comprehensive new way, where the customer (the patient) is first—a system focused on health and maintaining it, a system strong and vibrant enough for our future. If you think health care is interesting only to institutes and politicians, think again: Catastrophic Care is surprising, engaging, and brimming with insights born of questions nobody has thought to ask. Above all it is a book of new ideas that can transform the way we understand a subject we often take for granted.

Book Fathers Caring for Children with Special Health Care Needs

Download or read book Fathers Caring for Children with Special Health Care Needs written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study's findings illustrate that, fathers of children with SHCN struggle to integrate work and family even if they are not considered primary caregivers. Community, home, and job resources were salient for these fathers to mitigate a lack of resources across ecologies. This lack of resources tended to reinforce traditional gender norms for both mother and father. Resources within and across the three different ecologies were found to have direct and compensatory effects. Community resources were identified as the most important resources for both positive and negative spillover. The study also highlights the positive spillover effects related to employment and family care for fathers of children with SHCN. Organizations are called to reduce flexibility stigma and decrease barriers to using workplace flexibility to improve work-life fit for fathers caring for children with SHCN. Social services like childcare, or after school care, and social support are of critical relevance and need to better support these fathers and families. Considerations for future research are presented.

Book Circles of Care and Understanding

Download or read book Circles of Care and Understanding written by James May and published by Assn for the Care of Childrens. This book was released on 1992 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is intended to assist in the establishment, facilitation, leadership, and evaluation of support programs for fathers of children with disabilities. The manual begins with a foreword written by a father of a child with severe disabilities and a preface by the project director of the National Fathers' Network. An introductory chapter identifies common themes of fathers' programs (e.g., safety, camaraderie, and understanding); benefits of fathers' programs (e.g., discuss and practice the skills of caregiving); and suggestions for using the manual. The second chapter discusses patterns of family life, the father's role/reactions, and results of fathers' support programs (e.g., increased acceptance of the child). The third chapter addresses steps in starting such a group, including obtaining organizational sponsorship, recruiting fathers, determining costs, creative fund raising options, planning for child care, and locating meeting space. Principles of facilitation and leadership based on various leadership models (combinations of a professional and/or fathers facilitating the group) are covered next. Organizational activities (father/child activities, open discussion, educational opportunities, and social activities) are considered in the fifth chapter. Principles of individual and program evaluation are summarized, and the final chapter offers additional suggestions for supporting male involvement. Fifteen appendices provide sample publicity releases and forms, suggested activities, and evaluation guidelines. (Contains 21 references.) (DB)
