Download or read book Living within a Fair Share Ecological Footprint written by Robert Vale and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to many authorities the impact of humanity on the earth is already overshooting the earth’s capacity to supply humanity’s needs. This is an unsustainable position. This book does not focus on the problem but on the solution, by showing what it is like to live within a fair earth share ecological footprint. The authors describe numerical methods used to calculate this, concentrating on low or no cost behaviour change, rather than on potentially expensive technological innovation. They show what people need to do now in regions where their current lifestyle means they are living beyond their ecological means, such as in Europe, North America and Australasia. The calculations focus on outcomes rather than on detailed discussion of the methods used. The main objective is to show that living with a reduced ecological footprint is both possible and not so very different from the way most people currently live in the west. The book clearly demonstrates that change in behaviour now will avoid some very challenging problems in the future. The emphasis is on workable, practical and sustainable solutions based on quantified research, rather than on generalities about overall problems facing humanity.

Book excerpt: Pedestrian safety and design issues were the subjects jointly discussed at the Fourth Annual Pedestrian Conference held in Boulder, Colorado, September 20-23, 1983. The conference was divided into two 2-day meetings. The conference had two basic objectives: to disseminate tested engineering, education, and enforcement techniques to reduce the incidence of pedestrian accidents, and to present a variety of approaches utilized in the United States, Canada and Europe to create visually attractive, functional, and highly used urban pedestrian spaces. These proceedings present the findings, workshop presentations, case studies, design techniques and overall summaries of the meetings.

Download or read book Biography of Foot The know how of pedestrians written by Gunjan and published by Blue Rose Publishers. This book was released on 2022-06-20 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 70 percent of the world's population is a pedestrian, whether they drive or take public transit. However, for the last forty years, Indian planning has prioritized automotive use over pedestrian movement. This approach has created a car-dependent society where walking is difficult and dangerous. However, when constructing towns and streets, pedestrians should be considered. People are becoming more conscious of the negative consequences of excessive automobile use and are supporting walkable neighborhoods. In 2018, pedestrians were wounded in 139 accidents in Jalandhar, one of Punjab's largest and oldest cities. As a result, Jalandhar's walkability is declining in terms of pedestrian safety, comfort, and convenience. Thus, this book examines the differences between research and actual walkability in Jalandhar, as well as several walkability indices. This book analyses and recommends ways to improve Jalandhar's pedestrian environment and its impact on the city's future.

Download or read book Megacity Mobility Culture written by BMW Group and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-13 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What determines how cities move on? The ever-increasing challenges to urban mobility come in many forms, and approaches to address them range from the technically ingenious to attempts to change travel behaviour. Key amongst factors essential to the success of any such approach is whether the urban environment proves to be fertile ground for the desired progress. Another vital determinant of success is how well individual measures to engineer the transport system interact with other developments. This leads to the principal subject of Megacity Mobility Culture: the basic principles that determine the paths along which cities move. This book demonstrates that the concept of ‘mobility culture’ provides a framework for understanding the development of urban transport which transcends the boundaries between academic disciplines. Based on a discussion of the diversity of megacities worldwide, it provides help in navigating the complexity of megacity mobility culture. Experts from megacities around the world each take the reader on a journey to their own city and its mobility culture, giving a deeper insight into the unique evolutionary paths of mobility that these places have taken, and what lies before them. Whilst acknowledging the overwhelming diversity of cities worldwide, the authors also identify common denominators behind the evolution of urban transport systems – seven temperaments which are found in a unique mix in any given city, defining the character of its mobility culture. The Institute for Mobility Research is a research facility of the BMW Group. It deals with future developments and challenges relating to mobility across all modes of transport, with automobility being only one aspect among many. Taking on an international perspective, ifmo’s activities focus on social science and sociopolitical, economic and ecological issues, but also extend to cultural questions related to the key challenges facing the future of mobility. The work of the Institute is supported by an interdisciplinary board of renowned scientists and scholars, and by representatives of BMW, Deutsche Bahn, Lufthansa, MAN, Siemens and The World Bank.

It details the construction of the course, reveals why the races and course were considered "America's greatest" by international racing experts of the period and includes many biographies of the drivers who came to Savannah. Finally, the book explores the theories and complexities of why Savannah's races and road racing in general came to an end.
