It is not enough to say that schools need to be a safe place; work must be together to provide the resources to help students become well-adjusted human beings. This book will introduce the different categories students may fall into and how to address each specific circumstance. Currently and in the past, students threatening staff, hurting others, and bringing weapons on campus, would be dealt with by submitting them to isolation rooms or other tactics, but these tools are in place to help the student de-escalate and then are given punishments such as cleanup duty on campus or similar consequence. These solutions are not effective because the underlying causes of the anger and violence being exhibited are never addressed. Schools staffs need to be conscious of how they discipline or enforce rules. This leaves the door open for alternatives, as school administrators fear the consequences of parents who do not want their child disciplined. Heidi McDonald has thirty years as a school teacher and guidance counselor.
