Book A Factor analytic Study of the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory Second Edition LASSI 2 in a Sample of University Students

Download or read book A Factor analytic Study of the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory Second Edition LASSI 2 in a Sample of University Students written by Kwoneathia Rasha Hill and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study sought to provide a better understanding of the factor structure of the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory, Second Edition (LASSI-2) at the item to scale level (via confirmatory factor analysis) and to expand the LASSI-2's psychometric properties (i.e., means, standard deviations, alpha coefficients, and correlations of the LASSI-2's scale scores) as well as examine for potential sex differences in the LASSI-2 scale scores (via t tests with Cohen's d also being calculated) with a sample of 420 university students. The means, standard deviations, and alpha coefficients of the 10 LASSI-2 scales for the current data appeared comparable to those reported in the LASSI-2 manual and studies in the literature examining the LASSI-2. Additionally, the range of the correlations among the LASSI-2 scales in the current study was comparable to the range of correlations that the LASSI-2 manual reported. There were statistically significant sex differences in the scale scores of the LASSI-2's Anxiety, Study Aids, and Attitude scales; however, the effect sizes for these scales suggested that these were only moderately small differences. With regard to the LASSI-2's factor structure, the 10-scale structure proposed in the LASSI-2's manual was not sufficiently supported; however, post hoc analyses examining the LASSI-2's scales individually indicated that the Anxiety, Attitude, Study Aids, and Test Strategies scales had good structural support. Implications of these findings are discussed and suggestions for future research are provided.

Book The Importance of Learning Styles

Download or read book The Importance of Learning Styles written by Ronald R. Sims and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1995-05-23 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a timely review of learning style research. It examines those approaches that purport to promote effective learning. It affirms the need for instructors and trainers to recognize the importance of individual learning differences and to use methods that help create a learning climate which increases the potential learning for all students or trainees regardless of their preferred way of learning. The ability to understand and to teach to the various learning styles of students is essential to improving the effectiveness of college-level education. In this book, Sims and Sims bring together significant research to aid academics and organizational trainers in understanding and applying learning style research and knowledge to program, course, and class development.

Book Cognitive Styles and Learning Strategies

Download or read book Cognitive Styles and Learning Strategies written by Richard Riding and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1998. This book deals with what may well turn out to be the missing element in the study of individual differences - cognitive style. Its intention is to distinguish between, and integrate, the research attempts, particularly over the past half century, to make sense of style differences. In several respects this book is unique in that it contains material that is not covered in any other and draws together the various aspects of psychology relevant to the study of individual differences. It is in this sense both a textbook and a source of reference for many professionals working in a range of contexts. The content of the book has relevance for a wide audience.

Book Student Learning Styles and Brain Behavior

Download or read book Student Learning Styles and Brain Behavior written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cosponsored by St. John's University (New York) and the Learning Styles Network of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), the conference was designed to bring together leading figures in the fields of student learning styles and brain behavior research. Thirty-two papers from the conference are collected in this volume, divided into four sections. Part 1 presents eight papers reporting on attempts to implement learning styles analysis and diagnostic-prescriptive education in schools and classrooms. Among the topics covered are cognitive style mapping, tactual learners, and foreign language learning. Part 2 comprises 16 papers on student learning style assessment models, or instrumentation, and related research. Included are discussions of the group embedded figures test, cognitive profiles, learning style scales, personality structures, reading styles, and learning styles at kindergarten and university as well as secondary school levels. The seven papers in part 3 explore developments in brain behavior research and applications, including the whole brain, the left hemisphere, and nonverbal learning styles. The single article in part 4 suggests some next steps. Three appendices provide the NASSP student learning styles model, an annotated bibliography of selected learning styles instrumentation, and information about the NASSP Learning Styles Network. Book Learning Style Characteristics of the Online Student

Download or read book Learning Style Characteristics of the Online Student written by Diana Kay Garland and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to explore learning styles of online students. The researcher investigated differences between the learning styles, as determined by the Kolb Learning Style Inventory, of students in courses taught face-to-face and students in matched courses that were taught asynchronously online. The data from this investigation was also examined to determine if a relationship exists between the online student's learning style and the student's engagement in the online course. For purposes of this study, this level of engagement was defined as the number of accesses a student had per area as displayed on the Blackboard course statistics page. Finally, the data from this investigation were used to determine if gender was a factor in the relationship between learning style of online students and the student's engagement in the online course. A quantitative research design was employed to address the research questions. Data were collected using the Kolb LSI IIa and the Kolb LSI 3, demographic data was gathered from university records, and learner engagement statistics were gathered from the course management system Blackboard. One-way MANOVA was used to analyze the 168 Kolb inventories that were completed by this sample. It was concluded from the analysis that there was a significant difference in the learning style of the online student and the student enrolled in the face-to-face course. Sixty-one online students completed the Kolb LSI 3. There were no significant correlations identified between the Kolb learning modes of the online student and the student's level of engagement as measured by the statistics for the number of accesses to the four areas of Blackboard. However, when the data set was divided by gender significant differences were identified for male students between the Kolb learning modes and the student's level of engagement, but no significant differences were identified for the female students.

Book Perspectives on Thinking Learning and Cognitive Styles

Download or read book Perspectives on Thinking Learning and Cognitive Styles written by Robert J. Sternberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the most comprehensive, balanced, and up-to-date coverage of theory and research on cognitive, thinking, and learning styles, in a way that: * represents diverse theoretical perspectives; * includes solid empirical evidence testing the validity of these perspectives; and * shows the application of these perspectives to school situations, as well as situations involving other kinds of organizations. International representation is emphasized, with chapters from almost every major leader in the field of styles. Each chapter author has contributed serious theory and/or published empirical data--work that is primarily commercial or that implements the theories of others. The book's central premise is that cognitive, learning, and thinking styles are not abilities but rather preferences in the use of abilities. Traditionally, many psychologists and educators have believed that people's successes and failures are attributable mainly to individual differences in abilities. However, for the past few decades research on the roles of thinking, learning, and cognitive styles in performance within both academic and nonacademic settings has indicated that they account for individual differences in performance that go well beyond abilities. New theories better differentiate styles from abilities and make more contact with other psychological literatures; recent research, in many cases, is more careful and conclusive than are some of the older studies. Cognitive, learning, and thinking styles are of interest to educators because they predict academic performance in ways that go beyond abilities, and because taking styles into account can help teachers to improve both instruction and assessment and to show sensitivity to cultural and individual diversity among learners. They are also of interest in business, where instruments to assess styles are valuable in selecting and placing personnel. The state-of-the-art research and theory in this volume will be of particular interest to scholars and graduate students in cognitive and educational psychology, managers, and others concerned with intellectual styles as applied in educational, industrial, and corporate settings.
