Book excerpt: In the winter of 2012 a series of recording were made in the small hamlet of Osikovce, West Carpathians. The subject of the recordings was a man called Marus Pohansky, considered by many to be one of the last true Carpathian Witches. Descended from a long line of Pagan practitioners he lived according to a philosophy that would have been familiar to his ancestors, yet without the pretension often found in modern or new age "guru's". He was a man who simply did what he and his family had always done. Not much of a teacher, he often told stories and it was only after a while that I began to realise the nuggets I was looking for were buried somewhere in these innocuous tales. This is a book of four of his tales. They are true stories, according to Marus, and involve real life characters. The places are certainly real enough as I have visited them myself, but as for the tales.....well, who knows. However, whether the stories are true or not, they were believed by Marus and many local people; and wrapped within tales are perhaps deeper memories of times and ways of being which may soon pass.

Book The Book of Unknown Americans

Download or read book The Book of Unknown Americans written by Cristina Henríquez and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning novel of hopes and dreams, guilt and love—a book that offers a resonant new definition of what it means to be American and "illuminates the lives behind the current debates about Latino immigration" (The New York Times Book Review). When fifteen-year-old Maribel Rivera sustains a terrible injury, the Riveras leave behind a comfortable life in Mexico and risk everything to come to the United States so that Maribel can have the care she needs. Once they arrive, it’s not long before Maribel attracts the attention of Mayor Toro, the son of one of their new neighbors, who sees a kindred spirit in this beautiful, damaged outsider. Their love story sets in motion events that will have profound repercussions for everyone involved. Here Henríquez seamlessly interweaves the story of these star-crossed lovers, and of the Rivera and Toro families, with the testimonials of men and women who have come to the United States from all over Latin America.

Book excerpt: Presents the lives of eight individuals whose experiences illuminate a variety of dilemmas and anxieties that most of us encounter at different points of our lives. According to Spinelli (psychology, Regent's College), therapy at its most fundamental level involves the act of revealing, reassessing, and reconstructing the life stories that clients tell themselves in order to establish or maintain meaning. The existential therapist must not only listen, but must remain "un-knowing," i.e. open to new interpretation of that which is seemingly familiar, thus bringing to light unexamined possibilities. Book I Don t Want to Die Unknown

Download or read book I Don t Want to Die Unknown written by Dan Moyane and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2021-10-22 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dan Moyane was 10 years old when he lay on his back on a patch of grass at his parents' home in White City Jabavu, Soweto, looking at the moon and thinking, 'I don't want to die unknown.' The year was 1969, and Neil Armstrong and his team had recently achieved immortality by completing the first moon landing. It was the knowledge that the astronauts would be remembered as long as the world turned that made Dan realise that he, too, would like to be remembered by people outside of his immediate community, just as he would like to find out more about what lay beyond his horizon. Dan's insatiable curiosity and love of learning have ensured that his name has, indeed, become known throughout South Africa. This is the story of how he achieved his goal – from his days as a student at the apex of South Africa's political turmoil, to his years in exile in Mozambique and his first job in media, and the trajectory of a career that would see him become one of South Africa's most highly regarded and influential broadcasters. It is a career that led Dan to interview prominent leaders in Mozambique and South Africa and become acquainted with the likes of Nelson Mandela and Graça Machel, and saw him cover the country's birth into democracy, and help shape South Africans' understanding of the changed world around them. I Don't Want to Die Unknown delves into these experiences, giving a glimpse into the inquisitiveness and desire to know more, do more and be more that has driven Dan Moyane. It offers a rare insight into the man behind the microphone – his ambitions, trials, and motivations. Part memoir, part legacy, this book bears testimony to the fact that far from dying unknown, Dan is one of South Africa's most important, high profile media players and his story provides the framework for his next significant question: How best to use his public profile to benefit his countrymen.

Download or read book The Unknown written by Vence Delyane Barnett and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-05-10 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unknown book is formulated on fictional events that can or may have taken place in maybe your life or someone close to you. Not in as much as an actual event that has taken place in the reality of this life but in a reality of a life that we have no awareness of. But we create our own realities in our own minds based off what we choose to be, real and unreal. A lot of these choices that we make are based off fear, doubt, and a nonexistent understanding, which allows our narcissism to peak overwhelmingly, thereby leaving us with a naked, skeletonized truth of who we really are, therefore leading us into the place in which I like to call the Unknown.

Book Hymns to an Unknown God

Download or read book Hymns to an Unknown God written by Sam Keen and published by Bantam. This book was released on 1995-09-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no doubt that America is in the midst of a spiritual crisis. Millions of people are trying to find meaning in their lives by returning to old-time religions, or by seeking out new cults, fads, channelers, 12-step programs, and self-help books. Bill Moyers has called this search for spirituality "the biggest story -- not only of the decade but of the century." Now, Sam Keen, the New York Times bestselling author of Fire in the Belly, addresses this crisis and provides a blueprint for bringing spirituality into everyday life in Hymns to an Unknown God: Awakening the Spirit in Everyday Life. Using practical examples from his and other people's lives, Keen tells readers how to cut through what he calls the "spiritual bullshit," and recover the sacred in their love affairs, families, jobs, and politics -- in short, how to recover the "Unknown God." Down-to-earth and articulate, Sam Keen is a popular social commentator, philosopher, and teacher. He describes himself as "overeducated at the Ivies," with degrees from Harvard and Princeton. His work has been featured in a special Bill Moyers PBS interview, and for over twenty years he was a consulting editor at Psychology Today. How to Use Your Spiritual Bullshit Detector: In a world of one-minute solutions, false spiritual leaders, and instant spirituality, how can you tell which beliefs are valid and separate the bogus from the genuine. Sex and the Spirit: Why is it that sex and spirituality are so interconnected and confusing? Keen explains the conflict between "I want" and "I should," and tells readers how to integrate sensuality, sexuality and spirituality to experience truly deep and loving relationships. Consecrating Our Days: Rituals for Living: Keen gives more than a dozen suggestions for personal rituals to remind readers of the sacredness in their everyday lives, including creating a private place as a personal sanctuary, learning to make time to think deeply, setting aside personal days as times of celebration, and more.
