Book Last of the Donkey Pilgrims

Download or read book Last of the Donkey Pilgrims written by Kevin O'Hara and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2005-02-01 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin O'Hara's journey of self-discovery begins as a mad lark: who in their right mind would try to circle the entire coastline of Ireland on foot—and with a donkey and cart no less? But Kevin had promised his homesick Irish mother that he would explore the whole of the Old Country and bring back the sights and the stories to their home in Massachusetts. Determined to reach his grandmother's village by Christmas Eve, Kevin and his stubborn but endearing donkey, Missie, set off on 1800-mile trek along the entire jagged coast of a divided Ireland. Their rollicking adventure takes them over mountains and dales, through smoky cities and sleepy villages, and into the farmhouses and hearts of Ireland's greatest resource—its people. Along the way, Kevin would meet incredible characters, experience Ireland in all of its glory, and explore not only his Irish past, but find his future self. “One of the finest books about contemporary Ireland ever written...In a style evocative of Steinbeck's Travels with Charley, O'Hara writes memorably of his most unusual way of touring his ancestral home of Ireland.” —Library Journal At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Book excerpt: A Donkey's Journey chronicles the author's life and path to understanding his purpose according to God's will. Although the author had accomplished many things, such as being a Marine Corps veteran from operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and a deputy sheriff and special victims detective, he still felt worthless and was frustrated with the meaning of life. The author takes us on a journey with his bouts with worthlessness and struggles as he relates his life to that of a donkey. The author allows us to feel his pain when acknowledging his failures as a husband which led to the ultimate failure of his marriage. His undiagnosed mental health issues contributed to severe suicidal thoughts. This is of course until the day he turned his entire life over to God, and he asked God to give him a greater purpose for his life. We go on the journey with him as he faces spiritual battles along the way. His purpose in life begins to be identified as his spirit life grows stronger. The purpose of the book is to reach those that are battling some form of struggle in their life, to leave a feeling of worthlessness and find a life of purpose. The key to breaking the chains of bondage from all sorts of issues is to completely turn our lives over to Jesus Christ. He is not only the key to eternal life, he is the key to abundant life. "Wow....I must say that Greg does an incredible job of sharing his journey as a "Donkey"!!! As I read through the pages, its as if I was personally walking with him as he describes in great detail what he was experiencing and the thoughts that were racing through his mind as the events were unfolding. It also reminded me of my own journey and how God has kept me and walked with me. My personal challenge to the person that has chosen to pick this book up and read it is to keep an open mind and allow God to speak to your heart as he shows you the magnitude of his love." Download or read book Travels with My Donkey written by Tim Moore and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'A donkey?' blurted my family as one. For a moment it didn't seem they'd ever be able to list all the reasons that made this so entertainingly ludicrous. . . .Yes, I'd never ridden a donkey on a beach or petted one at a city farm, never even pinned a cardboard tail to one's throat after the cake and ice cream....A donkey would be my hairy-coated hair shirt, making my pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela a truer test of the will, a trial." With these words, having no knowledge of Spanish and even less about the care and feeding of donkeys, Tim Moore, Britain's indefatigable traveling Everyman, sets out on a pilgrimage to the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela with a donkey named Shinto as his companion. Armed only with the Codex Calixtinus, a twelfth-century handbook to the route, and expert advice on donkey management from Robert Louis Stevenson, Moore and his four-legged companion travel the ancient five-hundred-mile route from St. Jean Pied-de-Port, on the French side of the Pyrenees, to the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela, which houses the remains of Spain's patron saint, St. James. Over sun-scorched highways, precipitous bridges, dirt paths shaded by leafy trees, and vineyards occasionally lashed by downpours, Moore and Shinto pass through some of the oldest towns and cities in northern Spain in colorful company, both past and present. Pilgrims real and imagined have traveled this route throughout the ages, a diverse cast of wayfarers spanning Charlemagne, St. Francis of Assisi, Chaucer's Wife of Bath, and New Age diva, Shirley MacLaine. Moore's present-day companions are no less florid or poignant. Clearly more interested in Shinto than in Moore, their fellow walkers are an assortment of devout Christian pilgrims, New Age spirituality seekers, travelers grieving over a lost love affair, Baby Boomers contemplating the advent of middle age, and John Q. Public just out for a cheap, boozy sun-drenched outdoor holiday. As Moore pushes, pulls, wheedles, cajoles, and threatens Shinto across Spain toward the crypt of St. James in a quest to find the spiritual pilgrim within, the duo overnights in the bedrooms, dormitories, and---for Shinto---adjacent grassy fields of northern Spain's hostels, inns, convents, seminaries, and farmhouses. Shinto, a donkey with a finely honed talent for relieving himself at the most inopportune moments, has better luck in the search for his next meal than Moore does in finding his inner St. Francis. Undaunted, however, Man and Beast finally arrive at the cathedral and a successful end to their journey. For readers who delighted in his earlier books, Travels with My Donkey is the next hilarious chapter in the travels of Tim Moore, a book that keeps the bones of St. James rattling till this day.

Book The Wisdom of Donkeys

Download or read book The Wisdom of Donkeys written by Andy Merrifield and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'An amazing book... Erudite, acutely observed and spontaneous.' - John Berger 'This is Zen and the Art of Donkey Walking. I cannot imagine a more charming, informative or restful book.' - Jim Crace 'Pleasantly eccentric and elegantly written, suffused with the patient calm of the admired beast.' - New York Observer 'A fond meditation on the calming virtues of donkeyhood and daydreaming... a wistful travelogue.' - The Sunday Times When Andy Merrifield made his first trip to America aged ten, he vowed that one day he would leave his native Liverpool and live in New York. He eventually got there, but his dream quickly turned sour. In 2003, weary of city life, he moved to central France and embarked upon a journey of the soul, walking amid the ruins and spectacular vistas of the Auvergne. This book is the story of that slow pilgrimage, on which his only companion is Gribouille, a tender and intelligent donkey with soft, thick fur on his brow and calm, dark eyes. The purposeful pace of his journey allows Merrifield gradually to confront himself, as well as the larger mysteries of existence - while marvelling at his tranquil surroundings and revelling in the oddities of French rural life. The Wisdom of Donkeys reminds us that observing, being mindful, and being present in the moment are essential to a fulfilled life. It teaches us that enlightenment is all around us if we only take the time to seek it.

Book Travels with a Donkey

Download or read book Travels with a Donkey written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1878, Robert Louis Stevenson was suffering from poor health, struggling to survive on the income derived from his writings, and tormented by his infatuation with Fanny Osbourne, a married American woman. His response was to embark on a journey through the Cevennes with a donkey, Modestine, and a notebook, which he later transformed into Travels with a Donkey. Just a few months after publication, Stevenson was off again -- this time crossing the Atlantic and the breadth of America in the hope of being re-united with Fanny, an experience he recorded in The Amateur Emigrant. Both pieces are classics of travel writings, which reveal as much about Stevenson's character as the landscape he travels through.

The author is one of those people who was born with a great love of animals and a deep sensitivity to them. As we often learn in life, however, the things we love the most can sometimes be our greatest challenges. It seems that this is the case with our animal loving author. While trying to get close to the animals that crossed her path, the author experienced many a misadventure throughout her life. She refers to these incidents as her “critter calamities”. In this particular story, a trip to the Temple of Athena on the beautiful Greek Island of Rhodes presented her with a chance to fulfill a lifetime desire to ride a donkey. This dream come true opportunity takes a turn toward the unexpected, presenting the author with one of her most exciting, but frightening calamities.

Book Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes

Download or read book Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes written by Robert Louis Stevenson and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-06-11 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes (1879) is one of Robert Louis Stevenson's earliest published works and is considered a pioneering classic of outdoor literature. Background Stevenson was in his late 20s and still dependent on his parents for support. His journey was designed to provide material for publication while allowing him to distance himself from a love affair with an American woman of which his friends and families did not approve and who had returned to her husband in California. Travels recounts Stevenson's 12-day, 200-kilometre (120 mi) solo hiking journey through the sparsely populated and impoverished areas of the Cévennes mountains in south-central France in 1878.[1] The terrain, with its barren rocky heather-filled hillsides, he often compared to parts of Scotland. The other principal character is Modestine, a stubborn, manipulative donkey he could never quite master. It is one of the earliest accounts to present hiking and camping outdoors as a recreational activity. It also tells of commissioning one of the first sleeping bags, large and heavy enough to require a donkey to carry. Stevenson is several times mistaken for a peddler, the usual occupation of someone traveling in his fashion. Some locals are horrified that he would sleep outdoors and suggest it is dangerous to do so because of wolves or robbers. Stevenson provides the reader with the philosophy behind his undertaking:[2] For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move; to feel the needs and hitches of our life more clearly; to come down off this feather-bed of civilization, and find the globe granite underfoot and strewn with cutting flints. Alas, as we get up in life, and are more preoccupied with our affairs, even a holiday is a thing that must be worked for. To hold a pack upon a pack-saddle against a gale out of the freezing north is no high industry, but it is one that serves to occupy and compose the mind. And when the present is so exacting who can annoy himself about the future? The Cévennes was the site of a Protestant rebellion around 1702, severely suppressed by Catholic Louis XIV. The Protestant insurgents were known as the Camisards. Stevenson was Protestant by upbringing, and a non-believer by philosophy. Stevenson was well-versed in the history and evokes scenes from the rebellion as he passes through the area of the rebellion during the final days of his trek. He notes that the Catholics and the Protestants, at the time of his travels, live peaceably alongside one another, though each community is faithful to its own traditions and its version of the region's history. All disapprove equally of a young Catholic man who married a Protestant girl and changed his faith, agreeing that "It's a bad idea for a man to change." As for a Catholic priest who left the priesthood and married, the sentiment common to all was that it is wrong to change one's commitments. The book appeared the following year, 1879, and is dedicated to his friend Sidney Colvin, an art historian and critic who had befriended him when he was unpublished and seeking to develop a career as a writer.
