Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author Susan Wilson is back with another signature heartwarming novel—one that begs the question: Can a dog lead the way to finding one's humanity? After spending years in prison for a crime she didn’t intend to commit, Rose Collins is suddenly free. Someone who knows about the good work she has done—training therapy dogs while serving time—has arranged for her early release. This mysterious benefactor has even set her up with a job in the coastal Massachusetts community of Gloucester, on the edge of Dogtown, a place of legend and, for the first time since Rosie's whole world came crashing down, hope. There she works to rebuild her life with the help of Shadow, a stray dog who appears one rainy night and refuses to leave Rose’s side. Meghan Custer is a wheelchair-bound war veteran who used to be hopeless, too. Living at home with her devoted but stifling parents felt a lot like being in prison, in fact. But ever since she was matched with a service dog named Shark, who was trained in a puppy-to-prisoner rehabilitation program, Meghan has a brand new outlook. Finally, she can live on her own. Go to work. And maybe, with Shark by her side, even find love again. Two strong women on a journey toward independence whose paths collide in extraordinary ways. Two dogs who somehow manage to save them both. A tale of survival and a testament to the human spirit, The Dog I Loved is an emotional and inspiring novel that no reader will soon forget.

Book A General Theory of Visual Culture

Download or read book A General Theory of Visual Culture written by Whitney Davis and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is cultural about vision--or visual about culture? In this ambitious book, Whitney Davis provides new answers to these difficult and important questions by presenting an original framework for understanding visual culture. Grounded in the theoretical traditions of art history, A General Theory of Visual Culture argues that, in a fully consolidated visual culture, artifacts and pictures have been made to be seen in a certain way; what Davis calls "visuality" is the visual perspective from which certain culturally constituted aspects of artifacts and pictures are visible to informed viewers. In this book, Davis provides a systematic analysis of visuality and describes how it comes into being as a historical form of vision. Expansive in scope, A General Theory of Visual Culture draws on art history, aesthetics, the psychology of perception, the philosophy of reference, and vision science, as well as visual-cultural studies in history, sociology, and anthropology. It provides penetrating new definitions of form, style, and iconography, and draws important and sometimes surprising conclusions (for example, that vision does not always attain to visual culture, and that visual culture is not always wholly visible). The book uses examples from a variety of cultural traditions, from prehistory to the twentieth century, to support a theory designed to apply to all human traditions of making artifacts and pictures--that is, to visual culture as a worldwide phenomenon.

The dogs chase one another through time as they each attempt to return home with possession of a powerful weapon called the Power Saber. Along the way, they find new friends and adventure around every corner in these new (to them) time lines. They encounter pirates, hunters, dinosaurs, and knights all while chasing the Stray Crew! And in all their adventures, a treasured friend might leave them...twice! A Dog in Time is a story about friendship, family, forgiveness, and the power of love! (Not the mushy kind. Okay, well, maybe some of that.) It's a three-part series full of character, adventure, and humor!

Book A Struggle for Independence

Download or read book A Struggle for Independence written by Sandra Lowery and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-01-09 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Struggle for Independence is a true story based on my personal life as someone who has lived with mild Cerebral palsy and the many goals I have accomplished such as walking at twenty months old and speaking, driving a car at age seventeen, another was motherhood at age thirty-five which was a huge victory for me. I gave birth to a healthy normal baby girl, who is the joy of my life. I have overcome many obstacles in spite of the prejudice and ignorance that I have faced with society. I was raised in a military family that moved around from state to state and lived in Europe as well. I'm the oldest of four siblings. As the oldest I was responsible for my younger siblings, one of them, a precocious younger sister who forced me to excel in ways that weren't expected. In addition, my mother had the insight to allow me to do things on my own without any interference. This story leads you from tears to laughter. You might ask yourself does her struggle with independence have to do with her physical disability or society itself? I hope my story inspires others like myself to write their story.
