Book excerpt: Ruffy is a lonely little dog who lives by the seaside and sustains himself with scraps from the rubbish bins along the beach car parks. One morning when he decides to beat the heat and take a dip in the ocean, he hears a voice across the water calling for help. He barks as much as he can to try and get people to see the little boy in trouble, but nobody takes any notice, the crashing waves are too loud, and everyone is playing games and laughing! So he jumps in and bravely swims against the waves to the little boy and just manages to bring him back to shore. Joeys parents are so relieved that their son didnt drown, and everybody gathers around him to keep him warm and make sure he is OK, but nobody even looks at Ruffy. Eventually he trudges back to the car park to get some food. At the same time, Joey is asking his Mum if he can keep the dog. She initially says no, but relents when she sees Joey and Ruffy looking back at each other. Then we see the elation on Joeys face as they run to each other. The final scene is at home where Joeys father is making a nice warm kennel for Ruffy, who is happily eating a big bowl of food. Joey is smiling, saved from drowning, and now with a new best friend.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Collection of Short Stories Dr. Lamont Patel is a dedicated historian of African-American history. After a devastating terror attack on their museums funding to rebuild is being withheld. Supervision of future historical content will be reviewed by the History Simplification Committee that is controlled by foreign financial entity. Dr. Nelson Pong, its CEO, is determined to stifle Patel’s efforts for financial independence and self-reliance. Further research and speculation into historical events led to the embellishment of Black history; other peoples of color historians were intimidated by Pong’s influence, which caused challenges for Patel. Maxwell Lowe and Dennis Sloan are prison inmates of the future. Each is incarcerated in separate hellholes, but each one has a solution to their problems. Milo Bipp has had a rough few days. Not only is his probationary surveillance implant (The Eye) violating his privacy, but his probation officer is working with the person who is responsible for his imprisonment. Envy and jealousy play a prominent role in this story of greed and deception. They said, “Old soldiers never die; they just fade away,” but Soldier 333 is not your average soldier, even at his age. He is an exception to most military cliches. These and other situations that seasoned characters face in the not-so-distant future are intriguing and challenging.

Book excerpt: Death stalks the Blue Ridge Mountains as a centuries-old mystery resurfaces and murder mars the lead-up to an annual beagle competition, in a thrilling new tale from Rita Mae Brown and her feline co-author Sneaky Pie Brown. “As feline collaborators go, you couldn’t ask for better than Sneaky Pie Brown.”—The New York Times Book Review A massive nor’easter has hit northern Virginia, where Mary Minor “Harry” Harristeen joins groundskeeping efforts at the National Beagle Club at Aldie as the date for its springtime Hounds for Heroes veterans’ benefit approaches. Harry’s fellow volunteers, including her oldest friend, Susan Tucker, comprise a spirited group of hunting enthusiasts, some former service members themselves. But things take a sinister turn when, after a routine tree cleanup along the Club’s hunting trails, retired foreign services officer Jason Holzknect is found dead, throat slit from ear to ear. Soon enough, another murder in their midst jolts the preparations, convincing Harry that the killer is familiar with the Club—and must be close by, masked in plain sight. The intrigue extends to the grounds of Harry’s beloved local church, where the identity of an eighteenth-century skeleton wearing precious pearls remains a mystery. The anonymous woman’s neck had been snapped, and marks on the grave where her body was secreted indicate that someone recently tried to remove it, leading Harry to question how well she really knows those around her. As always, Harry’s crime-solving cats Mrs. Murphy and Pewter, and Tee Tucker the Corgi share her determination to sniff out the foes among friends, even those long buried. Harry will need her four-legged companions’ help more than ever: a ghostly beagle only they can see may hold the key to the culprit.

Book RUFF AND TUMBLE

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joan C. Winters
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2007-10-26
  • ISBN : 1477171770
  • Pages : 81 pages

Download or read book RUFF AND TUMBLE written by Joan C. Winters and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2007-10-26 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From hypothesizing about the origins of the Human Animal Bond and how the first animals became domesticated, to defining the bond and ultimately enumerating the many ways in which animals benefit society, the opening of this work commands one’s complete attention. Just as all pet owners become intrigued by the rapid physical growth of a puppy or kitten, the author reminds them to not only be witness to the physical nature of this process but to become attune to the more subtle changes that occur. These changes are primarily rooted in the animal’s sensitivities. Having set the stage for these awe inspiring feelings, she embarks on a most emotional yet at times humorous memoir of her departed Golden Retriever, Ruff and his sibling and littermate, Tumble. The exploits of these animals, together with their adopted feline sister will have the reader experiencing the heights of laughter together with the depths of grief. It is a remarkable roller coaster of emotion that rings so true in its parallels to everyday life. The poetic prowess of her husband, AD, is obvious in the two pieces he authors within the book. The final chapter of the book deals with the seriousness of loss for individuals. Whether the loss is a pet or person, the coping methodologies are similar. The discussion of souls, the levels of love and the enduring bonds provides a venue to release grief, to be open to afterlife communications and to realize that some things last forever. This profound conclusion applies to both humans and animals alike, with minimal changes. Readers will find this book therapeutic in terms of dealing with the raw pain and emotion following a loss in their family. For this is the very reason that the author wrote this work, that is to bring healing to those in need.
