Book excerpt: The Distant Prayer is a remarkable story and a testament of a love, hope and a desire to see loved one's reverse their misfortunes into triumphs. The story begins with the first encounter of a mother and son; separated from each other, however, upon learning of her son's misfortune and the physical barrier that lied between them, the distant prayer becomes her only hope. Would a distant prayer be enough to save her son? Lush, evocative and deeply humane, the book takes the reader on a journey through a series of encounters, which work together to tell one story and to explore the nature of distant prayers to see if there's any shred of scientific evidence that they do work.

Book Investigating Prayer

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ian Olver
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-10-10
  • ISBN : 146144571X
  • Pages : 155 pages

Download or read book Investigating Prayer written by Ian Olver and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-10 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book relates the experience of researching, planning, and conducting a scientific study into intercessory prayer (prayer for others). The purpose of the study was to ascertain whether the impact of prayer could be measured in a formal study, based on the large number of anecdotal reports of efficacy. The study was a prospectively randomized double-blind trial that added prayer by an established Christian prayer group to conventional therapy for cancer. The unique design feature was that the primary endpoint was a change in a validated scale of spiritual well-being. The patients were informed that they were participating in a study about spiritual well-being and quality of life but remained blinded to the intervention. The initial observation from the baseline data was that spiritual well-being made a unique contribution to quality of life. The final outcome of the study was that there was a statistically significant difference in spiritual well-being favoring the prayer group. The background includes a fascinating review of the medical literature on the topic, which contains positive and negative studies that each attracts a vigorous debate about methodology, endpoints, and whether metaphysical phenomena can or should be studied using scientific methodology. The complementary and alternative medicine literature is also equivocal as to whether prayer, arguably the most common complementary medical therapy, should be included in the range of interventions grouped under that heading. In addition to reporting the background and results of the study, the book explores the reactions of a range of individuals to the trial, all of which help reflect on the nature of prayer.

Download or read book Hittin the Prayer Bones written by Anderson Blanton and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2015-07-29 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, Anderson Blanton illuminates how prayer, faith, and healing are intertwined with technologies of sound reproduction and material culture in the charismatic Christian worship of southern Appalachia. From the radios used to broadcast prayer to the curative faith cloths circulated through the postal system, material objects known as spirit-matter have become essential since the 1940s, Blanton argues, to the Pentecostal community's understanding and performances of faith. Hittin' the Prayer Bones draws on Blanton's extensive site visits with church congregations, radio preachers and their listeners inside and outside the broadcasting studios, and more than thirty years of recorded charismatic worship made available to him by a small Christian radio station. In documenting the transformation and consecration of everyday objects through performances of communal worship, healing prayer, and chanted preaching, Blanton frames his ethnographic research in the historiography of faith healing and prayer, as well as theoretical models of materiality and transcendence. At the same time, his work affectingly conveys the feelings of horror, healing, and humor that are unleashed in practitioners as they experience, in their own words, the sacred, healing presence of the Holy Ghost.

Book When God Doesn t Answer Your Prayer

Download or read book When God Doesn t Answer Your Prayer written by Jerry L. Sittser and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-10-14 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a decade ago, Jerry Sittser prayed for the protection of his family, yet three of his loved ones--his daughter, his wife, and his mother--died in an automobile accident. What went wrong? "Why wasn't my prayer answered?" he asks. "It is no longer an abstract question to me. What should we do and how should we respond when our prayers--prayers that seem right and true and good--go unanswered?" In When God Doesn't Answer Your Prayer, Sittser continues exploring the issues he addressed in A Grace Disguised. He asks, "Why doesn't God answer our prayers? What, if anything, can we do about it?" Sittser is intensely committed to exploring the Christian faith, especially when it doesn't seem to "work." In this thoughtful and beautifully written book, he moves beyond easy answers and religious formulas to explore the goodness and greatness of a God who cannot be controlled but can be trusted. When God Doesn't Answer Your Prayer takes an honest and probing look at the problem of unanswered prayer. In doing so, it draws us ever deeper into a relationship with the God who is the end of all our prayers, the object of our faith, the one who fulfills our deepest longings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Comedian's Prayer Book. The title is a worry, isn't it?... God is a tough audience as far as audible response is concerned, but at least you don't have to explain the references. In this collection of prayers, much-loved comedian, broadcaster and radio host Frank Skinner has tried to retain the bare candour of the rehearsal-room improvisation - to show what faith feels like, from the inside - but infused it with all the production values required to make it a passable public entertainment. In it are his convictions, his questions, his fears, his doubts, his elations - all presented in an eavesdropper-friendly form. Hell, Judgement, atheism, money, faith and the X-Men all feature: it's a bit like reading the Bible, except you only get one side of the conversation, and all the jokes are left in.

Yet most people are skeptical of prayer, or convinced they’re doing it wrong. Is there a secret to talking with God? God is more concerned about the condition of our hearts than the words we use. He cares more about the posture of our hearts than the posture of our bodies. And what is the right heart posture? Humility. On the other side of the journey, readers will have a more vibrant prayer life, and a more intimate relationship with the God to whom we pray.
