Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical System of Rhetoric: Or the Principles and Rules of Style Inferred From Examples of Writing; To Which Is Added a Historical Dissertation on English Style After all, it must be allowed, that with the most skilful ih struction, and the best text-book, young students will obtain but imperfect ideas in what pertains to the philosophy of rhetoric. Still, what IS thus imperfectly acquired, will he of importance to them as Opening some interesting fields of thought, which, with strengthened powers, they may after wards explore;-and further, as aiding them in better under standing the nature of the rules and directions founded on these important and somewhat intricate principles. Not illustrated. 1812 edition. Excerpt: ... BOOK n..1... KJ11..1.. ti: .!;?;, -!q .: CHAP. I. A He orator should be acquainted with human manners and passions. Hitherto we have endeavoured to explain what concerns those things which it is necessary to know, in order to be in a condition for persuaditig, or the contrary; for censure or praise, accusation or defence: and we even have gone into the opinions and propositions, which are, in such cases, useful, for the purpose of attaching credit to what is said. From those alone, and the places we have given, every argument and enthymem which each kind of discourse, separately, and each of the three kinds of rhetoric require, are derived. But because rhetoric has been instituted, with the design of inducing the auditor to give his opinion upon what is proposed to him (for the resolutions of a deliberative assembly are real judgments, and the courts of law are celebrated but by their decisions) for this reason it will be necessary, that the orator should not only tak? care to adduce sound reasoning, and prove his allegations, but also, while he speaks, to impress a good opinion of himself on those whom he addresses, and to win the favour of the judge towards the subject of his pleading. In matters of persuasion, and more particularly in public assemblies, or in forensic pleading, it is highly important for the advocate, in the first place, to impress his hearers with a favourable opinion of him (by appearing at once, a man of ability, of honour, and inclined to their good); and in the second place, it is incumbent on him, previous to his address upon the main point, to make a certain disposition of their minds to receive it. The art of impressing a favourable opinion of the speaker on the minds of his hearers, is more peculiarly requisite.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dissertation Upon Rhetoric In ushering to the world this treatise of the learned Stagyrite, I shall confess the difficulties which I have encountered, and the anxiety which I still feel as to its reception. That it is the greatest of all that great master's productions, is an assertion which I do not singly hazard. The learned and laborious Franciscus Philelphus terms it "Rhetorica illustrissimi philosophorum Aristotelis utilissima;" and this epithet has been strongly borne out by the following testimony of the celebrated Boileau Despreaux, in his preface to a translation of Longinus upon the Sublime: "C'est un ouvrage d'une extreme utilite; & pour moi, j'avoue franchement que sa lecture m'a plus profité que tout ce qui j'ai jamais lû en ma vie." Book Readings in Classical Rhetoric

Download or read book Readings in Classical Rhetoric written by Thomas W. Benson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhetoric -- the theory of oral discourse -- affected and indeed pervaded all aspects of classical thought. Bearing the stamp of its impact were the Homeric hymns, the Iliad and the Odyssey, Aeschylus' Eumenides, the great dramatic tragedies, the elegiac and lyric poetry, and the literature of the Romans, often formed in the Greek image. The rhetorical notion of probability had direct implications for the classical philosopher and mathematician as it does today. Departments of speech, English, philosophy and classics provide the key centers of interest in the new and the classical rhetorics. Despite the considerable enthusiasm for the study of rhetoric, no single work provides large selections of primary materials written by the classical rhetoricians themselves. Until now, only secondary sources containing tiny excerpts, or entire and expensive translations of the ancient rhetorical writings were available. This large anthology of primary readings of the classical rhetoricians in translation fills this large gap. The continuity and coherence of ancient rhetorical traditions is emphasized by organizing large excerpts into the topical divisions that later classical writers agreed upon. The first unit of this anthology sets forth major issues in the definition and scope of rhetoric, and its appropriate place among other modes of thought and discourse. Parts 2 through 5 are organized according to the traditional canons of oratory -- invention, disposition, style, memory, and delivery. In organizing the readings this way, the editors represent both the philosophical and theoretical issues in rhetoric and its pragmatic functions as a craft for making effective discourse. Selecting excerpts that illustrate the major conflicts within the unfolding tradition enables a sampling of not only the major points of view, but also the arguments supporting them. This volume includes selections not only from writings of the standard classical rhetoricians but also from less typical works which have special value. The editors have utilized the best accessible translations while remaining absolutely faithful to their texts.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rhetoric of John Donne's Verse: A Dissertation The third chapter deals with a yet practically untouched aspect of the criticism of English verse; The revelation of Donne's secret came to me suddenly after three years of daily, almost hourly, entreating, caressing, and wheedling of each line of his poetry.1 At first the thing seemed improbable; but, at the same time, it was so real and so plain as to give one that uncanny feeling experienced by those who dare to meddle with the affairs of 'some old lover's ghost.' Book Introduction to Classical Legal Rhetoric

Download or read book Introduction to Classical Legal Rhetoric written by Michael H. Frost and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawyers, law students and their teachers all too frequently overlook the most comprehensive, adaptable and practical analysis of legal discourse ever devised: the classical art of rhetoric. Classical analysis of legal reasoning, methods and strategy is the foundation and source for most modern theories on the topic. Beginning with Aristotle's Rhetoric and culminating with Cicero's De Oratore and Quintilian's Institutio Oratoria, Greek and Roman rhetoricians created a clear, experience-based theoretical framework for analyzing legal discourse. This book is the first to systematically examine the connections between classical rhetoric and modern legal discourse. It traces the history of legal rhetoric from the classical period to the present day and shows how modern theorists have unknowingly benefited from the classical works. It also applies classical rhetorical principles to modern appellate briefs and judicial opinions to demonstrate how a greater familiarity with the classical sources can deepen our understanding of legal reasoning.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study in Greek Rhetoric: A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of Letters of the Catholic University of America in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy We have not included in our investigation the study of rhyth mical clausulae in Chrysostom, because the question of prose rhythm is still a much-mooted one, and allows much room for subjective theorizing. Book Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres Classic Reprint written by Hugh Blair and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Rhetoric and Belles Lettres But although taste be ultimately founded on sensibility, it must not be considered as instinctive sensibility alone. 'reason and good sense, as I before hinted, have so extensive an influ ence on all the operations and decisions of taste, that a thorough good taste may well be considered as a power compounded of natural sensibility to beauty, and of improved understanding. In order to be satisfied of this, let us observe, that the greater part of the productions of genius are no other than imitations of nature; representations of the characters, actions, or manners of men. The pleasure we receive from such imitations or repro scutations is founded on mere taste; but to judge whether they be properly executed, belongs to the understanding, which compares the copy with the original. In reading, for instance, such a poem as the feneid, a great part of our pleasure arises from the plan or story being well conducted, and all the parts joined together with probability and due connexion; from the characters being taken from nature, the sentiments being suited to the characters, and the style to the sentiments. The pleasure which arises from a poem so conducted, is felt or enjoyed by taste as an internal sense but the discovery of this conduct in the poem is owing to reason and the more that reason enables us to discover such propriety in the conduct, the greater will be our pleasure. We are pleased, through our natural sense of beauty. Reason shows us why and upon what grounds we are pleased. Wherever, in works of taste, any resemblance to nature is aimed at; wherever there is any reference of parts to a whole, or of means to an end, as there is indeed in almost every writing and discourse there the understanding must always have a great part to act. Here then is a wide field for reason's exerting its powers in relation to the objects of taste, particularly with respect to composition, and works of genius; and hence arises a second and a very considerable source of the improvement of taste. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Abridgment of Lectures on Rhetoric The want of a system of Rhetoric upon a concise plan, and at an easy price will, it is presumed, render this little volume acceptable to the public. To collect knowledge, which is scattered over a wide extent, into a small compass, if it has not the merit of originality, has at least the advantage of being useful. Many, who are terrified at the idea of travelling over a ponderous volume in search of information, will yet set out on a short journey in pursuit of science with alacrity and profit. Those for whom the following Essays are principally intended, will derive peculiar benefit from the brevity, with which they are conveyed. To youth, who are engaged in the rudiments of learning; whose time and attention must be occupied by a variety of subjects, every branch of science should be rendered as concise as possible. Hence the attention is not fatigued, nor the memory overloaded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
