Book The Rhetoric of John Donne s Verse

Download or read book The Rhetoric of John Donne s Verse written by Wightman Fletcher Melton and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rhetoric of John Donne's Verse: A Dissertation According to Goldsmith, all those 'misguided innovators' who succeeded, but did not understand Dryden, Addison, and Pope, 'are silent, and those who make out their meaning are willing to praise, to show their understanding.' There are so many literary historians, and writers on versification, who make no mention of John Donne, that we may take it for granted that he was either not understood, or not appreciated by them. Of those who do mention him, to praise or to condemn, it cannot be said that all, or any, fully understand him, - that praise and condemnation are sometimes offered to 'show understanding' there can be no doubt. Our first chapter makes no pretense to being an exhaustive study of Donne's critics, for the reason that our concern is only with the metrical side of his poetry. Even with this end in view, some important authorities may have been overlooked; but the showing is sufficient to enable one to trace the current of opinion from Ben Jonson to the present time. Occasionally when one critic quotes or refers to another, no further special mention will be made of the one so quoted or referred to. The second chapter is merely an application, to the poetry of Donne, of the theory of 'secondary word-accent in English verse, ' as advanced by Professor Bright and applied in the dissertations of his pupils, Huguenin, Brown, and Miller. Book A Study in Greek Rhetoric

Download or read book A Study in Greek Rhetoric written by Thomas Ameringer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study in Greek Rhetoric: A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of Letters of the Catholic University of America in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the influence of the Second Sophistic Rhetoric on St. John Chrysostom by studying in his sermons the chief figures of speech employed by the sophist rhetors, as well as the sophistic ecphrasis. From the vast bulk of Chrysostom's sermons, about 450 in number, we have selected the Sermones Panegyrici sen in Solemnitates as most likely to show the sophistic influence. The epideictic discourse was in fact the most favored by the rhetors, and allowed the fullest display of rhetorical resources. The panegyrical sermons comprise some of the most celebrated sermons of Chrysostom, viz., the seven Panegyrics on St. Paul and the Festal Discourses. We have not, however, entirely neglected the other sermons, and have included in our study the first four Homilies on the Statues, the two On Eutropius, two On His Return from Exile, and one Against the Games and Theatres. An examination of the tendencies of profane rhetoric in the sermons of the greatest orator of the Eastern Church will, we hope, be a welcome contribution to one of the most interesting problems of today, the literary relations between Hellenism and Christianity. In regard to this question our study aims to continue the investigations made by L. Meridier in his work: L'Influence de la seconde sophistique sur l'oeuvre de Gregoire de Nysse, as well as by M. Guignet: St. Gregoire de Nazianze etla Rhetorique. We have followed substantially the plan of these scholars, and have been guided by their methods in the handling of our subject. We have, however, confined our study to the strictly rhetorical influences as they appear in the tropes, figures of speech, and the ecphrasis of the above mentioned sermons, while their works embrace not only the study of the tropes and figures, but also the composition and the dialectics of the sermons and other writings of Gregory of Nyssa and Gregory Nazianzen. We have not attempted to trace in Chrysostom any close correspondences between his style and that of any particular sophist, e.g., Libanius. Both Meridier and Guignet have pointed out the futility of such a plan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Not illustrated. 1812 edition. Excerpt: ... BOOK n..1... KJ11..1.. ti: .!;?;, -!q .: CHAP. I. A He orator should be acquainted with human manners and passions. Hitherto we have endeavoured to explain what concerns those things which it is necessary to know, in order to be in a condition for persuaditig, or the contrary; for censure or praise, accusation or defence: and we even have gone into the opinions and propositions, which are, in such cases, useful, for the purpose of attaching credit to what is said. From those alone, and the places we have given, every argument and enthymem which each kind of discourse, separately, and each of the three kinds of rhetoric require, are derived. But because rhetoric has been instituted, with the design of inducing the auditor to give his opinion upon what is proposed to him (for the resolutions of a deliberative assembly are real judgments, and the courts of law are celebrated but by their decisions) for this reason it will be necessary, that the orator should not only tak? care to adduce sound reasoning, and prove his allegations, but also, while he speaks, to impress a good opinion of himself on those whom he addresses, and to win the favour of the judge towards the subject of his pleading. In matters of persuasion, and more particularly in public assemblies, or in forensic pleading, it is highly important for the advocate, in the first place, to impress his hearers with a favourable opinion of him (by appearing at once, a man of ability, of honour, and inclined to their good); and in the second place, it is incumbent on him, previous to his address upon the main point, to make a certain disposition of their minds to receive it. The art of impressing a favourable opinion of the speaker on the minds of his hearers, is more peculiarly requisite.

Book Readings in Classical Rhetoric

Download or read book Readings in Classical Rhetoric written by Thomas W. Benson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhetoric -- the theory of oral discourse -- affected and indeed pervaded all aspects of classical thought. Bearing the stamp of its impact were the Homeric hymns, the Iliad and the Odyssey, Aeschylus' Eumenides, the great dramatic tragedies, the elegiac and lyric poetry, and the literature of the Romans, often formed in the Greek image. The rhetorical notion of probability had direct implications for the classical philosopher and mathematician as it does today. Departments of speech, English, philosophy and classics provide the key centers of interest in the new and the classical rhetorics. Despite the considerable enthusiasm for the study of rhetoric, no single work provides large selections of primary materials written by the classical rhetoricians themselves. Until now, only secondary sources containing tiny excerpts, or entire and expensive translations of the ancient rhetorical writings were available. This large anthology of primary readings of the classical rhetoricians in translation fills this large gap. The continuity and coherence of ancient rhetorical traditions is emphasized by organizing large excerpts into the topical divisions that later classical writers agreed upon. The first unit of this anthology sets forth major issues in the definition and scope of rhetoric, and its appropriate place among other modes of thought and discourse. Parts 2 through 5 are organized according to the traditional canons of oratory -- invention, disposition, style, memory, and delivery. In organizing the readings this way, the editors represent both the philosophical and theoretical issues in rhetoric and its pragmatic functions as a craft for making effective discourse. Selecting excerpts that illustrate the major conflicts within the unfolding tradition enables a sampling of not only the major points of view, but also the arguments supporting them. This volume includes selections not only from writings of the standard classical rhetoricians but also from less typical works which have special value. The editors have utilized the best accessible translations while remaining absolutely faithful to their texts.

Book Introduction to Classical Legal Rhetoric

Download or read book Introduction to Classical Legal Rhetoric written by Michael H. Frost and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawyers, law students and their teachers all too frequently overlook the most comprehensive, adaptable and practical analysis of legal discourse ever devised: the classical art of rhetoric. Classical analysis of legal reasoning, methods and strategy is the foundation and source for most modern theories on the topic. Beginning with Aristotle's Rhetoric and culminating with Cicero's De Oratore and Quintilian's Institutio Oratoria, Greek and Roman rhetoricians created a clear, experience-based theoretical framework for analyzing legal discourse. This book is the first to systematically examine the connections between classical rhetoric and modern legal discourse. It traces the history of legal rhetoric from the classical period to the present day and shows how modern theorists have unknowingly benefited from the classical works. It also applies classical rhetorical principles to modern appellate briefs and judicial opinions to demonstrate how a greater familiarity with the classical sources can deepen our understanding of legal reasoning.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outlines of Rhetoric for Schools and Colleges Aristotle 1 regards Rhetoric as the Art of Persuasion Whately,2 as the Art of Conviction; Campbell,8 as the Art of Discourse. Campbell's definition is to be preferred as more comprehensive than either of the others, since it includes all forms of literary composition; but Aristotle justly emphasizes the most vital object of all Rhetorical study - which is: to move men to action, to accomplish some definite purpose.
