Book Mechanism of Evaporation of Metal Crystals

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report includes: DISLOCATION CONFIGUATIONS IN DEFORMED SILVER SINGLE CRYSTALS, by H.J. Levinstein and W.H. Robinson. 1962. Ag single crystals oriented for single slip were deformed incrementally in both simple shear and tension, and the dislocation arrangements were observed after each increment of strain by optical examination of the etch pitted surface or by examining replicas of these surfaces by electron microscopy. in addition, some observations were made on specimens deformed in compression. For a given specimen several increments of strain were made during stage I of the deformation and also duing stage II. The principal facts which emerged from these observations are that stage I is characterized by slip bands consisting of clusters of dislocations which are cellular in appearance. The segments of these clusters which are straight are very short, probably no more than 1 microns, and a given portion of a dislocation moves only a short distance, of the order of 5 to 10 microns, before being stopped. These results agree with those of transmission electron microscopy of thin foils taken from bulk specimens which have been strained. But they do not agree with observations on thin foils strained in the electron microscope. (Author).

Book Etching of Crystals

    Book Details:
  • Author : K. Sangwal
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2012-12-02
  • ISBN : 0444599010
  • Pages : 518 pages

Download or read book Etching of Crystals written by K. Sangwal and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defects in Solids, Volume 15: Etching of Crystals: Theory, Experiment, and Application focuses on the processes, reactions, and methodologies involved in the etching of crystals, including thermodynamics and diffusion. The publication first underscores the defects in crystals, detection of defects, and growth and dissolution of crystals. Discussions focus on thermodynamic theories, nature of pit sites, surface roughening during diffusion-controlled dissolution, growth controlled by simultaneous mass transfer and surface reactions, and chemical and thermal etching. The text then examines the theories of dissolution and etch-pit formation and the chemical aspects of the dissolution process, including catalytic reactions, dissolution of semiconductors, topochemical adsorption theories, and diffusion theories. The book tackles the solubility of crystals and complexes in solution and the kinetics and mechanism of dissolution. Topics include metallic crystals, semiconductors, stability of complexes, relationship between solubility, surface energy, and hardness of crystals, and solvents for crystals and estimation of crystal solubility in solvents other than water. The publication is a dependable source of data for readers interested in the etching of crystals.

Book excerpt: In the last decade or so the growth of single crystals has assumed enormous importance for both academic research, and technology (particu larly in the field of 'electronics'). The range of fields involved is great: from electro-optics to metal corrosion, from semiconductors to magnetic bubble materials-one can add to the list almost indefinitely. However, while the general principles of crystal growth can be applied aImost right across the board, it turns out that the precise way in which one can grow a particular crystal best varies considerably from material to material. This, of course, is to emphasise the obvious; nonetheless, except in specialised papers in the scientific litera ture , little attempt seems to have been made to deal in any detail with the causes of the difficulties in growing particular kinds of materials and with methods of circumventing them. These specialised papers may be inaccessible, and in any case cannot be, usually, very broad in scope or detailed in treatment simply because of the pressure to keep papers short. And unfortunately few specialised monographs seem to have been produced. These points and others similar emerged repeatedly in discussions with crystal growers from aU parts of the World and indicated that there was a need for a publication which would deal in detail with problems and techniques for specialised areas of crystal growth.

Book Rost Kristallov Growth of Crystals

Download or read book Rost Kristallov Growth of Crystals written by A. A. Chernov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Growth of Crystals series was begun in 1957 by A. V. Shubnikov and . N. N. SheftaP with the publication of the first volume. which contained the proceedings of the First All-Union Conference on Crystal Growth. The initiative and considerable efforts of the principal editor of the entire series. N. N. Sheftal', and his assistants led over the next 15 years to the publica tion of ten volumes which have assumed a leading position among the numerous books on crys tal growth. It has become traditional in this series to adopt a broad approach to crystal growth problems, and this approach is continued in Volumes 11 and 12, which are composed mainly of papers presented at the Fourth All-Union Conference on Crystal Growth in Tsakhkadzor. September 17-22, 1972. These papers, presented by both Soviet and foreign workers, deal with crystal growth processes. growth methods. and crystal perfection. Many of the papers reflect the tendency for our knowledge of crystallization processes to become increasingly more fundamental. with emphaSis on quantitative treatments. There are some extremely difficult problems in this approach. especially when the requirements of practical uses are envisaged. and many of these are discussed in various ways in these two volumes. These topics include detailed theoretical and experimental analysis of cooperative phenomena in crystallization. with emphasis not only on statistical thermodynamics but also statistical kinetics. This approach involves research on the structure and properties of phase boundaries. including the composition and structure of surface layers in liquids.
