Download or read book Postcolonial Images of Spiritual Care written by Emmanuel Y. Lartey and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-09-23 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology is about caring for all persons as a part of the revolutionary struggle against colonialism in its many forms. In recognition of the varied ways in which different forms of oppression, injustice, and violence in the world today are traceable to the legacy and continuing effects of colonialism, various authors have contributed to the volume from diverse backgrounds including differing ethnic identities, religious and cultural traditions, gender and sexual orientations, as well as communal and personal realities. As a postcolonial critique of spiritual care, it highlights the plurality of voices and concerns that have been overlooked or obscured because of the politics of race, religion, sexuality, nationalism, and other structures of power that have shaped what discursive spiritual care entails today. Postcolonial Images of Spiritual Care presents voices of practical and pastoral theologians, academics, spiritual care providers, religious leaders, students, and activists working to provide greater intercultural spiritual care and awareness in the areas of healthcare, community work, and education. The volume, as such, expands the discourse of spiritual care and participates in the ongoing paradigm shifts in the field of pastoral and practical theology.
Download or read book Pastoral Care written by Pope Gregory I and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastoral Care, or The Book of the Pastoral Rule, is a treatise on the responsibilities of the clergy written by Pope Gregory I in which he contrasted the role of bishops as pastors of their flock with their position as nobles of the church: the definitive statement of the nature of the episcopal office. Gregory enjoined parish priests to possess strict personal, intellectual and moral standards which were considered, in certain quarters, to be unrealistic and beyond ordinary capacities. The influence of the book, however, was vast and became one of the most influential works on the topic ever written. It was translated and distributed to every bishop within the Byzantine Empire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With kind and humble intent thou reprovest me, dearest brother, for having wished by hiding myself to fly from the burdens of pastoral care; as to which, lest to some they should appear light, I express with my pen in the book before you all my own estimate of their heaviness, in order both that he who is free from them may not unwarily seek them, and that he who has so sought them may tremble for having got them. This book is divided into four separate heads of argument, that it may approach the reader’s mind by allegations arranged in order—by certain steps, as it were. For, as the necessity of things requires, we must especially consider after what manner every one should come to supreme rule; and, duly arriving at it, after what manner he should live; and, living well, after what manner he should teach; and, teaching aright, with how great consideration every day he should become aware of his own infirmity; lest either humility fly from the approach, or life be at variance with the arrival, or teaching be wanting to the life, or presumption unduly exalt the teaching.
Download or read book A History of Pastoral Care written by G. R. Evans and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-05-01 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of pastoral care is a history of the Christian church in action. But if any sense is to be made of the centuries of Christian work and effort, not only the practicalities of making the message of the Gospel a reality on earth, but also the ideas which have shaped the attempt, century by century, must be examined. This is the history of 2000 years of thought and practice in Christian pastoral ministry. Until comparatively late in that story the bulk of the formative thinking took place in the Middle East and in Europe and this forms the background for recent developments in understanding human nature, and the ways in which that understanding has influenced our thinking in pastoral care.Subjects covered range from the Biblical foundations to the sects and new religious movements; from the Fathers, the monks, the Friars, the Templars to the changes at the end of the twentieth century.
Download or read book Be Not Anxious written by Allan Hugh Cole and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10-07 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As Allan Cole knows firsthand, both personally and pastorally, Christians are not immune from anxiety, and many believers go to their church leaders for support and solace. This helpful book draws on narrative approaches to theology and counseling to suggest how pastoral caregivers may effectively minister to anxious persons." "Be Not Anxious provides pastors and other caregivers with a basic understanding of anxiety, including how to identify those suffering from it and how to get at what is making them anxious. Cole focuses both on cognitive-based methods and on common faith practices - church membership, frequent worship, prayer, Bible reading, service, and confession - showing how these may provide relief from anxiety. By addressing the roles of both psychiatry and ministry as co-liberators from anxiety, he leads the pastor and the faith community in helping disquieted souls to find rest."--BOOK JACKET.

Just as the "Dictionary of Pastoral Care and Counseling" defined the field of Pastoral Care, this volume brings the field current. Essays by Nancy J. Ramsay, Joretta L. Marshall, Emmanuel Y. Lartey, Christie C. Neuger, Bonnie J. Miller-McLemore, and Loren L. Townsend. Download or read book A Most Dangerous Profession written by Eric C. Sorenson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-01-13 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every Christian is assailed by the gales of temptation, but those in professional ministry face fiercer storms than the rest. As C. H. Spurgeon warned, contrary to what is often assumed, "our dangers are more numerous and more insidious than those of ordinary Christians." This perspective was shared by the unified voice of the historic church, leading some patristic church fathers to initially flee the call to ministry. The same dangers were repeatedly identified in the writings of the early English pastoral theologians as they sought to mentor their proteges in successful ministry. A Most Dangerous Profession surfaces these gems so often overlooked in historic Christian literature, and ends with their practical advice on how to overcome. As both a pastoral and spiritual theology, A Most Dangerous Profession is bound to add an important voice to the ongoing dialog about pastoral self-care.
