Book Ethical Theory Second Edition

Download or read book Ethical Theory Second Edition written by Heimir Geirsson and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2010-05-07 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first-rate introduction to ethical theory contains sections on various forms of ethical theory, such as egoism, virtue ethics, divine command theory, and consequentialism. Each section includes two or three of the most important contributions to the field, together with brief introductions by the editors. The second edition contains an improved approach to applied ethics. Each chapter on moral theories now includes a selection that deals with a moral problem, such as human cloning, abortion, and global warming. The selection illustrates how the relevant theoretical approach is put to use. There is therefore a much tighter integration between theory and practice than before. The new edition also contains an improved section on feminist ethical theory.

Book Boundaries of Discourse in the International Court of Justice

Download or read book Boundaries of Discourse in the International Court of Justice written by Michelle L. Burgis and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can Third World experiences of colonialism and statehood be expressed within the confines of the International Court of Justice? How has the discourse of international law developed to reflect postcolonial realities of universal statehood? In a close and critical reading of four territorial disputes spanning the Arab World, Burgis explores the extent to which international law can be used to speak for and speak to non-European experiences of authority over territory. The book draws on recent, critical international legal scholarship to question the ability of contemporary, international adjudication to address Third World grievances from the past. A comparative analysis of the cases suggests that international law remains a discourse only capable of capturing a limited range of non-European experiences during and after colonialism.

Book Discourse on the Objects and Importance of the National Institution

Download or read book Discourse on the Objects and Importance of the National Institution written by Joel R. Poinsett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Discourse, on the Objects and Importance of the National Institution: For the Promotion of Science, Established at Washington, 1840, Delivered at the First Anniversary The duty assigned me on this occasion is of such a character that I regret it has not devolved on some one more capable of performing it. To do justice to the subject requires more knowledge than I possess, and more leisure than I now enjoy; and I feel constrained to solicit your indulgence, while I explain the origin of the Institution for the Promotion of Science and the Useful Arts, and attempt to describe, as plainly and briefly as the subject will permit, its objects and importance. The lovers of science, literature, and the fine arts, residing in this District, felt sensibly the absence of those resources which are found elsewhere, and are necessary for the attainment of knowledge. They were mortified to perceive that the great advantages possessed by the public authorities at Washington were neglected, and that, at the seat of Government of this great nation, there existed fewer means than in any other city of the Union of prosecuting those studies, which, while they impart dignity and enjoyment to existence, lead to the most useful practical results.
