Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse, Delivered on the First Centennial Anniversary: Of the Tabernacle Church, Salem, Mass; April 26, 1835 The leading purpose in the settlement of New England, was religious. The colonists in general were men, who taught by precept and example, that the fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom. - Among the expedients adopted by the fathers of this town, to secure an habitual reverence for evangelical principles and institutions, was a public service, called Lecture. In addition to the exercises of worship on the Lord's day, a discourse was delivered, as often "as every other week at least, to the good satisfaction and content of the Church and town." Upon the death of the Rev. Messrs. Curwen and Noyes, in 1717, the Lecture was suspended. But soon after the ordination of their successor, the Rev. Samuel Fisk, in October, 1718, the expediency of reviving it was a topic of conversation. Just at the close of a meeting of the Church on the 25th of December, the Pastor reminded the brethren, that they had neglected to act upon the Lecture. The subjects of the work were of all ages, from children of four, seven and twelve years, up to extreme old age. And, if we may judge from such of them as have been living within the last twenty years, the conversions must have been genuine, and the consecration to Christ full and practical. So far as known, a solitary individual alone remains, a monument of the grace of this memorable period. As the fruits of this revival, there were added to the church during the year 1786, eighty-eight members, and in the year following, ten, by which the church was more than doubled, there being but ninety-one members before.
