Book A Direct Measurement of the W Decay Width

Download or read book A Direct Measurement of the W Decay Width written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A direct measurement of the W boson total decay width is presented in proton-antiproton collisions at (square root)s = 1.96 TeV using data collected by the CDF II detector. The measurement is made by fitting a simulated signal to the tail of the transverse mass distribution in the electron and muon decay channels. An integrated luminosity of 350 pb−1 is used, collected between February 2002 and August 2004. Combining the results from the separate decay channels gives the decay width as 2.038 ± 0.072 GeV in agreement with the theoretical prediction of 2.093 ± 0.002 GeV. A system is presented for the management of detector calibrations using a relational database schema. A description of the implementation and monitoring of a procedure to provide general users with a simple interface to the complete set of calibrations is also given.

Book Direct Measurement of the Top quark Decay Width with the ATLAS Detector

Download or read book Direct Measurement of the Top quark Decay Width with the ATLAS Detector written by Tomas Dado and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The top quark is the heaviest known elementary particle. Due to its large mass, the top quark decays before it forms bound states. This makes the top quark a unique particle in the Standard Model. Precise measurements of its properties could be used as tests of the consistency of the Standard Model and potential deviations could point to physics Beyond the Standard Model. This thesis deals with the direct measurement of the top-quark decay width using data collected in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 8 and 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Book Measurement of the W Boson Mass and Width Using a Novel Recoil Model

Download or read book Measurement of the W Boson Mass and Width Using a Novel Recoil Model written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a direct measurement of the W boson mass (M{sub W}) and decay width ([Lambda]{sub W}) in 1 fb−1 of W → e[nu] collider data at D0 using a novel method to model the hadronic recoil. The mass is extracted from fits to the transverse mass M{sub T}, p{sub T}(e), and E{sub T} distributions. The width is extracted from fits to the tail of the M{sub T} distribution. The electron energy measurement is simulated using a parameterized model, and the recoil is modeled using a new technique by which Z recoils are chosen from a data library to match the p{sub T} and direction of each generated W boson. We measure the the W boson mass to be M{sub W} = 80.4035 ± 0.024(stat) ± 0.039(syst) from the M{sub T}, M{sub W} = 80.4165 ± 0.027(stat) ± 0.038(syst) from the pT(e), and MW = 80.4025 ± 0.023(stat) ± 0.043(syst) from the E{sub T} distributions. [Lambda]{sub W} is measured to be [Lambda]{sub W} = 2.025 ± 0.038(stat) ± 0.061(syst) GeV.

Book Precision Electroweak Physics at Electron Positron Colliders

Download or read book Precision Electroweak Physics at Electron Positron Colliders written by Stefan Roth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This up-to-date volume reviews the recent contributions of electron-positron colliders to the precision test of the electroweak Standard Model. In particular, it contains a short summary of the measurements at the Z resonance and gives an overview of the electroweak processes above the Z. Subsequently, the measurement of the W mass at LEP is discussed in detail. The implications for the precision test of the Standard Model are presented, giving the status of the global electroweak fit before the startup of Large Hadron Collider. The final chapters give an outlook on the electroweak physics at a future linear collider. The book also features many illustrations and tables. Readers obtain a coherent overview of the results of 20 years of electroweak physics conducted at electron-positron colliders.

This book was released on 1995-05-31 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The investigation of hadronic and nuclear probes with protons and electrons in the energy range of a few GeV is of great importance for the understanding of the properties of nucleons and mesons as well as of their interaction. Experimental results from studies with these beams provide the basis for the development and the tests of theoretical approaches in the energy regime of non-perturbative QCD. They can also clarify the effect of the nuclear medium on elementary reactions. The conference has reviewed the present status of this field of research. The topics have beenThe conference topics comprised investigations near energy thresholds in the tradition of the conferences on Particle Production near Threshold in Nashville, IN, USA, 1990, and Uppsala, Sweden, 1992.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland, is the world's largest and highest energy and highest intensity particle accelerator. Here is a timely book with several perspectives on the hoped-for discoveries from the LHC.This book provides an overview on the techniques that will be crucial for finding new physics at the LHC, as well as perspectives on the importance and implications of the discoveries. Among the accomplished contributors to this book are leaders and visionaries in the field of particle physics beyond the Standard Model, including two Nobel Laureates (Steven Weinberg and Frank Wilczek), and presumably some future Nobel Laureates, plus top younger theorists and experimenters. With its blend of popular and technical contents, the book will have wide appeal, not only to physical scientists but also to those in related fields.
