They pass unnoted, although in some cases they may have had values influential in determining the course of events. It chanced that I myself was an actor in one of these lesser incidents, when second secretary to our legation in France, during the summer of 1862. I may possibly overestimate the ultimate importance of my adventure, for Mr. Adams, our minister of the court of St. James, seems to have failed to record it, or, at least, there is no allusion to it in his biography. In the perplexing tangle of the diplomacy of the darker days of our civil war, many strange stories must have passed unrecorded, but surely none of those remembered and written were more singular than the occurrences which disturbed the quiet of my uneventful official life in the autumn of 1862.

Book Diplomatic Baggage

Download or read book Diplomatic Baggage written by Brigid Keenan and published by John Murray. This book was released on 2011-03-17 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Sunday Times fashion journalist Brigid Keenan married the love of her life in the late Sixties, little idea did she have of the rollercoaster journey they would make around the world together - with most things going horribly awry while being obliged to keep the straightest face and put their best feet forward. For he was a diplomat - and Brigid found herself the smiling face of the European Union in locales ranging from Kazakhstan to Trinidad. Finding herself miserable for the first time in a career into which many would have long ago thrown the towel, she found herself asking (during a farewell party for the Papal Nuncio): was it worth it? As this stream of it-really-happened-to-me stories shows, it most certainly was - if only for our vicarious bewilderment at how exactly you throw a buffet dinner during a public mourning period in Syria, remain viable as a fashion journalist when taste-wise you are three seasons out of it and geographically a world away, make people believe that there are actually terrible things going on in paradise, be a good mother and save some of the finest architecture in Damascus and Brussels from demolition - seemingly all simultaneously.

This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unseen Hand Stories of Diplomatic Adventure Young Simmons had appeared in Fleet Street as a fledgling war-correspondent for the Ladies' Farm & Home Weekly of Columbus, Ohio, having been dizzily elevated from the society column by a managing editor who had no other available material. And he was endeavoring to impress a Young-American point of view upon the men who were shuttling between St. Bride's House and Adelphi Terrace while they waited for transportation and faked their daily cables from anything they could pick up around Whitehall. Someone had put him up at the Press Club as a matter of esprit de corps. Somebody else invited him to dine at the Savage, where hemet such men as Palmer, "R. H. D." Irwin, and other of the Olympians who happened to be passing through at the tune. Simmons had read "Gallegher," thought it a rather improbable sketch, and ventured to correct, upon some trifling point, the big kindly man who, in a few short months, was to become only a memory.
