Duke begins with his ancestors' history in Norway and their emigration to Iowa in 1892. His grandfather acquired a number of farms in the Norwegian community in central Iowa, and the author lived on one of these farms as a child. His childhood is idyllic, though the Depression and the Dust Bowl years take their toll on the adults in the community. His stepfather takes a job in Pecos, Texas in 1936 and the family adjusts to a new life in this little "cow town." Following a year of college, Duke joins the army in 1944 and after training at Ft. Hood is sent overseas for two years. He serves in Company "F," 314th Infantry, 79th Division in the European Theater. After the war, he returns to Texas A&M to complete his degree. Commissioned as a second lieutenant in the air Force, he serves four years as an intelligence officer during the Korean War.

My background taught me not only to enjoy the simple pleasure of good fellowship with family, friends and church members; as well as acquaintances in my community. We even shared our meager blessings with the less fortunate of God's children, like hobos who came by looking for food. We also learned to respect and deal with the dangers of infantile paralysis, diphtheria, whooping cough, malaria, measles, mumps, hydrophobia and the hazards prevalent during those times. We learned to love God and Country by our experiences with our church and the Baptist faith. We gained a sense of patriotism and duty to country by witnessing the grief and loss experienced by our friends and neighbors who lost love ones during World War II. These combined experiences shaped my life for all time to come.

",,,about those women that would catch one´s eyes in a flash was their bare boobs. The boobs hung down their chests for about sixteen inches before you could see the nipples on the lower end. "The Island Commander who we dubbed a spoil sport, thought us Allied Military people did not need such a viewing. The Island Commander called the local Papuab Chief and his wife to a council meeting. Much to our regret he got the Chief and his wife to understand his directions. He would issue two white Navy T-shirts (U.S. Navy underwear tops) to them for each female. He ordered the Chief to see that they wore one of those T-shirts at all times. "So far so good...in no time from our viewing point we could see white clad females along the forest and on the beaches. In a couple of days we had to make a run for another load of supplies and the personnel of a U. S. Navy Construction Battalion. "As we were entering the port on our return the forward main deck of our ship suddenly became occupied by more than the normal number of people who should be there. Those men on the forwarded deck were the first ones to view a great scene. The natives had cut holes in the chest of the T-shirts"...
