Book British Methodist Revivalism and the Eclipse of Ecclesiology

Download or read book British Methodist Revivalism and the Eclipse of Ecclesiology written by James E. Pedlar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revivalism was one of the main causes of division in nineteenth century British Methodism, but the role of revivalist theology in these splits has received scant scholarly attention. In this book, James E. Pedlar demonstrates how the revivalist variant of Methodist spirituality and theology empowered its adherents and helped foster new movements, even as it undermined the Spirit’s work through the structures of the church. Beginning with an examination of unresolved issues in John Wesley’s ecclesiology, Pedlar identifies a trend of increasing marginalization of the church among revivalists, via an examination of three key figures: Hugh Bourne (1772-1852), James Caughey (1810-1891), and William Booth (1860-1932). He concludes by examining the more catholic and irenic theology of Samuel Chadwick (1860-1932), the leading Methodist revivalist of the early twentieth century who became a strong advocate of Methodist Union. Pedlar shows that these theological differences must be considered, alongside social and political factors, in any well-rounded assessment of the division and eventual reunification of British Methodism.

Book Catherine Booth

Download or read book Catherine Booth written by John Read and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catherine Booth's achievements - as a revivalist, social reformer, champion of women's rights, and, with her husband William Booth, co-founder of the Salvation Army - were widely recognized in her lifetime. However, Catherine Booth's life and work has since been largely neglected. This neglect has extended to her theological ideas, even though they were critical to the formation of Salvationism, the spirituality of the movement she cofounded. This book examines the implicit theology that undergirds Catherine Booth's Salvationist spirituality and reveals the ethical concerns at the heart of her soteriology and the integral relationship between the social and evangelical aspects of Christian mission in her thought. Catherine Booth emerges asa significant figure from the Victorian era, a British theologian and church leader with a rare if not unique intellectual and theological perspective: that of a woman.

Book Women and the shaping of British Methodism

Download or read book Women and the shaping of British Methodism written by Jennifer M. Lloyd and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A response to the prominent Methodist historian David Hempton’s call to analyse women’s experience within Methodism, this book is the first to deal with British Methodist women preachers over the entire nineteenth century. The author covers women preachers in Wesley’s lifetime, the reason why some Methodist sects allowed women to preach and others did not, and the experience of Bible Christian and Primitive Methodist female evangelists before 1850. She also describes the many other ways in which women supported their chapel communities. The book also includes discussion of the careers of mid-century women revivalists, the opportunities home and foreign missions offered for female evangelism, the emergence of deaconess evangelists and Sisters of the People in late century, and the brief revival of female itinerancy among the Bible Christians.

Book Saved to Save and Saved to Serve

Download or read book Saved to Save and Saved to Serve written by Harold Hill and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Salvation Army has now been around for more than one hundred and fifty years, having celebrated its sesquicentennial in 2015 with an International Congress in London. Over the years both the Army and the world in which it appeared have changed beyond recognition. This is a good time for the movement to stop and look back—not just to celebrate, but to see where it is today. The Army has not evolved in isolation from the world. Bringing its own history with it, it nevertheless belongs to the twenty-first century world as much as William Booth’s little East End Mission belonged to nineteenth-century London. This book attempts to explore the interaction between mission and world as it has impacted the Army’s beliefs and practices as well as the place it now occupies in the wider world. This critical and analytical study may also be of interest to those beyond the Army’s ranks who would like to learn more about this remarkable organization.

Book excerpt: While born into a working-class Methodist family in a small English town, Catherine Booth (1829-1890) went on to become one of the most influential women of her day and age. As a preacher, author, social reformer, wife and mother, she played a critical role in the origin and development of the Salvation Army, which had spread to numerous parts of the globe by the time of her death. Possessing firm convictions on a host of religious and moral matters, Catherine left an indelible mark on both the Salvation Army and the wider evangelical community. The significance of Booth’s legacy is on display in this ground-breaking volume, which brings together for the first time her most important shorter writings on theology, female ministry, social issues, and world missions. Including scholarly commentary by Andrew M. Eason and Roger J. Green, this anthology offers unparalleled insight into the life and thought of a remarkable figure from the Victorian period. The wide-ranging topics found within this edited collection will appeal to readers of theology, church history, social history, Christian missions, and women’s studies.
