Certainly the familiar phenomena that accompany sc ale changes in optical patterns are mentioned in the earliest written records. The most obvious topological changes such as the creation or annihilation of details have been a topic to philosophers, artists and later scientists. This appears to of fascination be the case for all cultures from which extensive written records exist. For th instance, chinese 17 c artist manuals remark that "distant faces have no eyes" . The merging of details is also obvious to many authors, e. g. , Lucretius mentions the fact that distant islands look like a single one. The one topo logical event that is (to the best of my knowledge) mentioned only late (by th John Ruskin in his "Elements of drawing" of the mid 19 c) is the splitting of a blob on blurring. The change of images on a gradual increase of resolu tion has been a recurring theme in the arts (e. g. , the poetic description of the distant armada in Calderon's The Constant Prince) and this "mystery" (as Ruskin calls it) is constantly exploited by painters.

It is good scientific practice that proper measurements must be equipped with error and uncertainty estimates. For many applications, not only the measured values but also their errors and uncertainties, should be—and more and more frequently are—taken into account for further processing. This error and uncertainty propagation must be done for every processing step such that the final result comes with a reliable precision estimate. The goal of this book is to introduce the reader to the recent advances from the field of uncertainty quantification and error propagation for computer vision, image processing, and image analysis that are based on partial differential equations (PDEs). It presents a concept with which error propagation and sensitivity analysis can be formulated with a set of basic operations. The approach discussed in this book has the potential for application in all areas of quantitative computer vision, image processing, and image analysis. In particular, it might help medical imaging finally become a scientific discipline that is characterized by the classical paradigms of observation, measurement, and error awareness. This book is comprised of eight chapters. After an introduction to the goals of the book (Chapter 1), we present a brief review of PDEs and their numerical treatment (Chapter 2), PDE-based image processing (Chapter 3), and the numerics of stochastic PDEs (Chapter 4). We then proceed to define the concept of stochastic images (Chapter 5), describe how to accomplish image processing and computer vision with stochastic images (Chapter 6), and demonstrate the use of these principles for accomplishing sensitivity analysis (Chapter 7). Book excerpt: Supervisory Control Theory (SCT) provides a tool to model and control human-engineered complex systems, such as computer networks, World Wide Web, identification and spread of malicious executables, and command, control, communication, and information systems. Although there are some excellent monographs and books on SCT to control and diagnose discrete-event systems, there is a need for a research monograph that provides a coherent quantitative treatment of SCT theory for decision and control of complex systems. This new monograph will assimilate many new concepts that have been recently reported or are in the process of being reported in open literature. The major objectives here are to present a) a quantitative approach, supported by a formal theory, for discrete-event decision and control of human-engineered complex systems; and b) a set of applications to emerging technological areas such as control of software systems, malicious executables, and complex engineering systems. The monograph will provide the necessary background materials in automata theory and languages for supervisory control. It will introduce a new paradigm of language measure to quantitatively compare the performance of different automata models of a physical system. A novel feature of this approach is to generate discrete-event robust optimal decision and control algorithms for both military and commercial systems.

Within such a branch visual perception tasks can either be addressed through the introduction of application-driven geometric ?ows or through the minimization of problem-driven cost functions where their lowest potential corresponds to image understanding. The 3rd IEEE Workshop on Variational, Geometric and Level Set Methods focused on these novel mathematical techniques and their applications to c- puter vision problems. To this end, from a substantial number of submissions, 30 high-quality papers were selected after a fully blind review process covering a large spectrum of computer-aided visual understanding of the environment. The papers are organized into four thematic areas: (i) Image Filtering and Reconstruction, (ii) Segmentation and Grouping, (iii) Registration and Motion Analysis and (iiii) 3D and Reconstruction. In the ?rst area solutions to image enhancement, inpainting and compression are presented, while more advanced applications like model-free and model-based segmentation are presented in the segmentation area. Registration of curves and images as well as multi-frame segmentation and tracking are part of the motion understanding track, while - troducing computationalprocessesinmanifolds,shapefromshading,calibration and stereo reconstruction are part of the 3D track. We hope that the material presented in the proceedings exceeds your exp- tations and will in?uence your research directions in the future. Recent years have seen significant advances in the application of sophisticated mathematical theories to the problems arising in image processing. Basic issues include image smoothing and denoising, image enhancement, morphology, image compression, and segmentation (determining boundaries of objects-including problems of camera distortion and partial occlusion). Several mathematical approaches have emerged, including methods based on nonlinear partial differential equations, stochastic and statistical methods, and signal processing techniques, including wavelets and other transform theories. Shape theory is of fundamental importance since it is the bottleneck between high and low level vision, and formed the bridge between the two workshops on vision. The recent geometric partial differential equation methods have been essential in throwing new light on this very difficult problem area. Further, stochastic processes, including Markov random fields, have been used in a Bayesian framework to incorporate prior constraints on smoothness and the regularities of discontinuities into algorithms for image restoration and reconstruction. A number of applications are considered including optical character and handwriting recognizers, printed-circuit board inspection systems and quality control devices, motion detection, robotic control by visual feedback, reconstruction of objects from stereoscopic view and/or motion, autonomous road vehicles, and many others.

Research on "shape from texture", "shape from shading", and "shape from focus" is still in a laboratory stage and had not seen much use in commercial machine vision systems. A range image or a depth map contains explicit information about the distance from the sensor to the object surfaces within the field of view in the scene. Information about "surface geometry" which is important for, say, three-dimensional object recognition is more easily extracted from "2 1/2 D" range images than from "2D" intensity images. As a result, both active sensors such as laser range finders and passive techniques such as multi-camera stereo vision are being increasingly utilized by vision researchers to solve a variety of problems.
