Book A Dielectrophoretic Liquid Oxygen Converter for Operation in Weightless Environments

Download or read book A Dielectrophoretic Liquid Oxygen Converter for Operation in Weightless Environments written by John R. Blutt and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyses, experiments, and designs were executed to establish the performance characteristics, optimum weight, and safety of a dielectrophoretic liquid oxygen converter. A theory was developed for electric field gradient stabilization of liquid/vapor systems. Laboratory liquid-liquid experiments and KC-135 zero-g tests corroborated the theoretical performance. Vibration tests demonstrated the structural integrity of typical electrodes and their supports. Also experiments were conducted to determine the electrical breakdown strength of cryogenic oxygen. These tests demonstrate the compatibility and safety of typical electrode and support structures under intense electric fields and even under electrical arcs having orders of magnitude more energy than could be experienced in practice. A computer and analysis was used to determine minimum weight system designs based on experimentally verified performance equations, structure weight formulas, and safety criteria. The total weight of the dielectrophoretic electrodes, supports, power supply, and tank feedthrough to orient the liquid in a 25-liter oxygen converter subject to randomly directed accelerations up to 0.001 g is 7 lbs. The operating voltage is 21 kv. A preliminary design is presented for a 25-liter converter system for orbital flight testing. (Author).

Book Design Study of a Liquid Oxygen Converter for Use in Weightless Environments

Download or read book Design Study of a Liquid Oxygen Converter for Use in Weightless Environments written by John M. Reynolds and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A basic investigation directed towards the de velopment of the dielectrophoretic oxygen con verter has been conducted. The work has covered dielectrophoretic theory, application to design, supporting experiments, preliminary design of a 25-liter converter, and construction of a small dielectrophoretic t for flight test experi ments. We find that the level of the dielectro phoretic forces can be predicted quantitatively. These force levels are limited in a practical con verter design by dielectric breakdown of the medium, by stability of the fluid-vapor inter face, and sometimes by force wells that trap fluids in the vicinity of the electrodes. Crite ria for converter design in view of these limita tions are developed, and it is shown that in a 25-liter converter ''equivalent dielectrophoretic gravity fields'' in the region from 10 to the -3 power to 10 to the -1 power g sub o should be attainable on the fluid with a 20,000 volt poten tial. Provision is made for uninterrupted opera tion up to 25 g sub o. Liquid-vapor separation occurs continuously in the converter. The entire converter, with auxiliaries, weighs 14.0 lb dry. (Author).

Book CAPILLARY ACTION LIQUID OXYGEN CONVERTER FOR WEIGHTLESS ENVIRONMENT

Download or read book CAPILLARY ACTION LIQUID OXYGEN CONVERTER FOR WEIGHTLESS ENVIRONMENT written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 25-liter, capillary-action liquid-oxygen converter was fabricated to incorporate all the components required to provide a completely operational, self-contained system to supply breath ing oxygen in a weightless environment. The converter design of functional components and the principle of operation combined the forces of surface tension, wetting, and capillary action of liquid oxygen to provide adequate forces to insure satisfactory operation of the system during space environments. These forces will provide for the expulsion of liquid oxygen under standard conditions, during acceleration forces up to and including 14G, and in the weightless condition. The report includes all the test data and results of the complete development program and the physical arrangement required for the capillary action converter system. The testing which could be accomplished in the laboratory gave every evidence that the design concept is satisfactory for weightless operation.
