Book Dictionary of Transport and Logistics

Download or read book Dictionary of Transport and Logistics written by David Lowe and published by Kogan Page Publishers. This book was released on 2005-06-03 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique, single volume dictionary aims to make sense of the language of generic terms, jargon, abbreviations and management buzzwords, to say nothing of the legal terms and definitions, that has grown up around the transport and logistics industries. -Provides clear, unambiguous definitions of some 3,000 terms, -Endorsed by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. -UK and EU terms covered; -A work of reference for everyone in the sector, from newcomers to senior management David Lowe has been actively involved in the road transport industry for more than 40 years, gaining 'hands'on' road haulage and logistics experience and a detailed knowledge of UK and EU transport law. He is the author of The Transport Manager's and Operator's Handbook now in it's 31st year of publication, and has written many other books, guides, study manuals and magazine articles on transport and logistics. He is an active member for the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and is Champion of the Institute's Freight Transport Special Interest Group. He is also a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Carmen and a Freeman of the City of London. Freight transport and logistics operations have become so technically sophisticated that a whole language of generic terms, jargon, abbreviations and managements to say nothing of the legal terms and definitions, has been generated. Vehicle manufacturers now strive to find new terms to describe technical achievements and new products, while legislators give such long titles to new regulations that they have to be identified with acronyms. Furthermore, recent developments in logistics and supply chain concepts have spawned a plethora of management concepts and new IT terms, initials and acronyms. The aim of this dictionary is to identify these terms and, in clear unambiguous English, provide accurate descriptions and definitions. With some 3,000 terms and abbreviations and acronyms included this is the most comprehensive dictionary of its type currently available. It will prove invaluable to readers from all sectors and at all levels from students and junior staff to top management, all of whom may need to source the meaning or relevance of industry terms not generally found in standard English language dictionaries.

Book International Encyclopedia of Transportation

Download or read book International Encyclopedia of Transportation written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-05-13 with total page 4418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly globalised world, despite reductions in costs and time, transportation has become even more important as a facilitator of economic and human interaction; this is reflected in technical advances in transportation systems, increasing interest in how transportation interacts with society and the need to provide novel approaches to understanding its impacts. This has become particularly acute with the impact that Covid-19 has had on transportation across the world, at local, national and international levels. Encyclopedia of Transportation, Seven Volume Set - containing almost 600 articles - brings a cross-cutting and integrated approach to all aspects of transportation from a variety of interdisciplinary fields including engineering, operations research, economics, geography and sociology in order to understand the changes taking place. Emphasising the interaction between these different aspects of research, it offers new solutions to modern-day problems related to transportation. Each of its nine sections is based around familiar themes, but brings together the views of experts from different disciplinary perspectives. Each section is edited by a subject expert who has commissioned articles from a range of authors representing different disciplines, different parts of the world and different social perspectives. The nine sections are structured around the following themes: Transport Modes; Freight Transport and Logistics; Transport Safety and Security; Transport Economics; Traffic Management; Transport Modelling and Data Management; Transport Policy and Planning; Transport Psychology; Sustainability and Health Issues in Transportation. Some articles provide a technical introduction to a topic whilst others provide a bridge between topics or a more future-oriented view of new research areas or challenges. The end result is a reference work that offers researchers and practitioners new approaches, new ways of thinking and novel solutions to problems. All-encompassing and expertly authored, this outstanding reference work will be essential reading for all students and researchers interested in transportation and its global impact in what is a very uncertain world. Provides a forward looking and integrated approach to transportation Updated with future technological impacts, such as self-driving vehicles, cyber-physical systems and big data analytics Includes comprehensive coverage Presents a worldwide approach, including sets of comparative studies and applications

The book is divided into ten chapters, each covering a specific conceptual dimension, including networks, modes, terminals, freight transportation, urban transportation and environmental impacts, and updated with the latest information available. The fifth edition offer new and updated material on information technologies and mobility, e-commerce, transport and the economy, mobility and society, supply chains, security, pandemics, energy and the environment and climate change. Book Transport Analysis

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Hershey
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461344840
  • Pages : 358 pages

Download or read book Transport Analysis written by Daniel Hershey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been my experience in teaching graduate and undergraduate courses that if the students are conversant with the pertinent mathematical proce dures, and can "think mathematically," there is almost no limit to their comprehension. Most courses that are considered difficult by students are either poorly taught or require a degree of mathematical sophistication that the students do not possess. In Transport Analysis, J have culled some basic momentum transport (fluid flow) and mass transport phenomena and explicitly revealed the derivation of the governing equations. There is no mystery, no omitted steps or "it can be shown" phrases that are usually the bane of the student. There are chapters that review basic calculus, vector and matrix concepts, Laplace transform operations, and finite difference calculus. Ordinary dif ferential and partial differential equations are derived and solved. This book is intended for undergraduates and graduate students in engineering, chemistry, physics, and even biology and medicine. It is also intended for my non-engineering colleagues with whom I have collaborated during our cooperative research in the life sciences. If they knew what is contained in Transport Analysis, they probably wouldn't need me. v Acknowledgments To Barbara and Michael, who helped keep me alert, happy, and ful filled. To Barbara, who deserves belated thanks for doing the drawings in E1'eryday Science. To Anne Hagedorn, thanks for doing some of the typing. To Gerry Denterlein, thanks for keeping tabs on the drawings.
