This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Dictionary of the Language of Mota, Sugarloaf Island, Banks' Islands The language of Mota is spoken as their native tongue by some eight hundred people, and has never probably been spoken in a past generation by more than a thousand. It derives its only importance from its having become, by circum stances rather than by choice, the language used as a common medium of communication in the Melanesian Mission. Being used in translations, in the oral teaching given to natives of many widely distant islands, and in the inter-communication of those so taught which has now continued for thirty years, it has become, next to the language of Fiji, the most generally known of the Melanesian tongues. It has certainly merits of its own it is phonologically free from the difficulties which beset some of the languages of the same and of neighbouring groups; and it is full, precise and exible enough for use in teaching and in translations. A Mota Dictionary may be taken as exhibiting a specimen of the group of languages to which it belongs; and should be followed by Dictionaries or ample Vocabularies of the languages of the principal islands in which the Melanesian Mission is at work. Book A Dictionary of Austronesian Monosyllabic Roots Submorphemes

Download or read book A Dictionary of Austronesian Monosyllabic Roots Submorphemes written by Robert Blust and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book documents an understudied phenomenon in Austronesian languages, namely the existence of recurrent submorphemic sound-meaning associations of the general form -CVC. It fills a critical gap in scholarship on these languages by bringing together a large body of data in one place, and by discussing some of the theoretical issues that arise in analyzing this data. Following an introduction which presents the topic, it includes a critical review of the relevant literature over the past century, and discussions of the following: 1. problems in finding the root (the "needle in the haystack" problem), 2. root ambiguity, 3. controls on chance as an interfering factor, 4. unrecognized morphology as a possible factor in duplicating evidence, 5. the shape/structure of the root, 6. referents of roots, 7. the origin of roots, 8. the problem of distinguishing false cognates produced by convergence in root-bearing morphemes from legitimate comparisons resulting from divergent descent, and 9. the problem of explaining how submorphemes are transmitted across generations of speakers independently of the morphemes that host them. The remainder of the book consists of a list of sources for the 197 languages from which data is drawn, followed by the roots with supporting evidence, a short appendix, and references.

Book Rote Meto Comparative Dictionary

Download or read book Rote Meto Comparative Dictionary written by Owen Edwards and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2021-11-25 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comparative dictionary provides a bottom-up reconstruction of the Rote‑Meto languages of western Timor. Rote-Meto is one low-level Austronesian subgroup of eastern Indonesia/Timor-Leste. It contains 1,174 reconstructions to Proto-Rote-Meto (or a lower node) with supporting evidence from the modern Rote-Meto languages. These reconstructions are accompanied by information on how they relate to forms in other languages including Proto‑Malayo‑Polynesian etyma (where known) and/or out-comparisons to putative cognates in other languages of the region. The dictionary also contains two finder-lists: English to Rote-Meto, and Austronesian reconstructions with Rote-Meto reflexes. The dictionary is preceded by three introductory chapters. The first chapter contains a guide to using the dictionary as well as discussion of the data sources. The second chapter provides a short synchronic overview of the Rote-Meto langauges. The third chapter discusses the historical background of Rote-Meto. This includes sound correspondences, the internal subgrouping of the Rote-Meto family, and the position of Rote-Meto within Malayo-Polynesian more broadly. Searchable electronic versions of the comparative dictionary are provided in two formats at http://hdl.handle.net/1885/251618. The first electronic version is a Lexique Pro export of the dictionary. The Lexique Pro file contains the same data and information in the book version of the dictionary, but does not contain the introductory chapters. See the "About Rote-Meto" tab of the Lexique Pro file for more information on this version of the dictionary. The second electronic version is a text file. It is formatted as a tab separated file and is intended to be read in spreadsheet format. This text file does not contain all the data and information in other versions of the Rote-Meto Comparative Dictionary and should be used in conjunction with these other versions. See the associated readme for more information on what data is included and excluded from that text file.
