This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The common names that we give to trees varies from country to country, the scientific name does not. It is the universal language of all who are interested in the natural world; some tree scientific names have become so familiar that we use them without thinking (Rhododendron and Magnolia for example) when talking about trees, others are much more obscure, despite the species being known to us all by more common names (Aesculus hippocastanum for example). Scientific names not only show us how species are related to one another, but they can also tell us where the tree originates, or who discovered it, or the habitat it prefers, or whether it has hairy leaves or sharp pointed needles; they can even tell us about how we used to use the tree in the past. There is a lot of information that can be gleaned from the scientific name of a tree, but, with Latin no longer taught as a mainstream subject, it is often a language that we don't understand. A Dictionary of Scientific Tree Names has been written to help you understand and interpret these names; the book covers over 450 species of trees that are found in Britain. This is the latest book by wildlife author and tour guide Ian Parsons.

Book Dictionary of Plant Lore

Download or read book Dictionary of Plant Lore written by D.C. Watts and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-05-02 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge of plant names can give insight into largely forgotten beliefs. For example, the common red poppy is known as "Blind Man" due to an old superstitious belief that if the poppy were put to the eyes it would cause blindness. Many plant names derived from superstition, folk lore, or primal beliefs. Other names are purely descriptive and can serve to explain the meaning of the botanical name. For example, Beauty-Berry is the name given to the American shrub that belongs to the genus Callicarpa. Callicarpa is Greek for beautiful fruit. Still other names come from literary sources providing rich detail of the transmission of words through the ages. Conceived as part of the author's wider interest in plant and tree lore and ethnobotanical studies, this fully revised edition of Elsevier's Dictionary of Plant Names and Their Origins contains over 30,000 vernacular and literary English names of plants. Wild and cultivated plants alike are identified by the botanical name. Further detail provides a brief account of the meaning of the name and detailed commentary on common usage. * Includes color images * Inclusive of all Latin terms with vernacular derivatives * The most comprehensive guide for plant scientists, linguists, botanists, and historians

Book Elsevier s Dictionary of Trees and Shrubs

Download or read book Elsevier s Dictionary of Trees and Shrubs written by Hugues Vaucher and published by Elsevier Science Limited. This book was released on 1986 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In scientific and commercial usage, a plant is designated by its Latin name. That is the simplest and most logical method and the only one precluding misunderstandings among professionals from all parts of the world. The layman, however, knows the plants mainly by their common designations and these vary from region to region and from country to country. One of the objectives of this work is therefore to simplify the correlation between the popular and the scientific names. The reader can find, quickly and conveniently, the Latin name of each tree or shrub. A unique feature of this book is that for each genus and species the author has mentioned its family, country of origin and some botanical characteristics. This multilingual dictionary comprises approximately 2,300 Latin names subdivided into 140 families, 510 genera, 1,650 species and varieties, together with their common denominations in English, French, German and Italian. The vast majority of the trees and shrubs mentioned are to be found in the temperate zones of the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Only a small number of trees typical of subtropical climates have been included. Being both a working tool and a reference book, this dictionary is intended not only for the professional but also for the layman wishing to extend his knowledge of the common names of the innumerable trees and shrubs growing on our planet.

For the English and French names the standard name is listed first, followed by other available names with, in parentheses, the countries where they are used. Where appropriate, names in additional languages are also included. Each infrageneric (species, subspecies, variety) entry includes, in addition, the distribution, height, type of foliage, ecological characteristics and main uses of the tree when available. In this volume only taxa indigenous on the North American continent are included, considered in a geographical, not in a political sense. Book CRC World Dictionary of Palms

Download or read book CRC World Dictionary of Palms written by Umberto Quattrocchi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2018 with total page 987 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is increasing interest in industry, academia, and the health sciences in palms. Palms are among the best known and most extensively cultivated plant families. They have been important to humans throughout much of history. Many common products and foods are derived from palms, such as edible oils, coconut products, fruit, vinegar, rattan, and soap among others. Palms are also widely used in landscaping for their exotic appearance, making them one of the most economically important plants. In many historical cultures, palms are symbols for such ideas as victory, peace, fertility, and the tropics. The listing is not exhaustive - no book can be - but will serve as the first starting point for better access to data on palms. The CRC World Dictionary of Palms will be the first comprehensive scientific treatment of palms in decades.

Book Elsevier s Dictionary of Plant Names and Their Origin

Download or read book Elsevier s Dictionary of Plant Names and Their Origin written by and published by . This book was released on 2000-07-19 with total page 1038 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dictionary contains about 30,000 vernacular and literary English names of plants (plus a few American), both wild and cultivated, with their botanical name and a brief account of the names' meaning if known. It was conceived as part of the author's wider interest in plant and tree lore, and ethnobotanical studies. Knowledge of plant names can give insight into largely forgotten beliefs. Why for example is, or was, the common red poppy known as "Blind Man"? An old superstition has it that if the poppy were put to the eyes it would cause blindness. Such names were probably the result of some taboo against picking the plant. Similarly, other names were likely to have been applied as a result of a country mother's warning to her children against eating poisonous berries. For the warning carries more weight when the name given to the berry reinforces the warning. Many such plants or fruits may be ascribed to the devil, Devil's Berries for Deadly Nightshade is an example. Names may also be purely descriptive, and can also serve to explain the meaning of the botanical name. Beauty-Berry is an example: it is the name given to the American shrub that belongs to the genus Callicarpa, which is made up of two Greek words that mean beauty and berry. Literary, or "book" names, have also been included in this dictionary, as being a very important part of the whole. Many of them provide links in the transmission of words through the ages. Thor's Beard, for example, is a book name for "houseleek", and has never been used in the dialect. But it highlights the legend that houseleek is a lightning plant, and by reverse logic is a preserver from fire.
