Book excerpt: Ever since John Wesley departed from Anglican usage by "consecrating" him as Superintendent of American Methodism, Thomas Coke has been a center of controversy. Though remembered primarily as the "Father of Methodist missions," he was a key figure in the development of Methodism on both sides of the Atlantic in the years before and after Wesley's death. To write his biography is to write much of the history of the Church he served. This makes it all the more surprising that no serious study of Thomas Coke has appeared in England for over a century, and that the only substantial twentieth-century biography is that of Bishop Candler published in America more than forty years ago. In the words of Cyril Davey on the occasion of the bicentenary of Coke's birth, "No man in Methodism had a greater significance for his own age, for Methodism, and for the Missionary movement. No man, deserving to be remembered, has been more completely forgotten." The present book is, in fact, the first documented study of the man ever published. Based to a considerable degree on unpublished primary material, it aims to present Coke as a human being in relation to, and often in conflict with, his contemporaries. Though much of the discussion is informed by financial and other quantitative data, Clive Norris examines a myriad of human struggles, and the conflict experienced by many early Wesleyan Methodists between their desire to spread the Gospel and the limitations of their personal and collective resources. These sermons, being transcripts from recordings, picked up Sangster "in the raw," at his most powerful, engaging with his listeners. This book is a resource, therefore, that aids students of homiletics and pastors in encountering a master at work, without the editorial polish of his extant sermons. The sermons on aspects of Christian holiness would be Sangster's first and last sequential series on the subject, placing before the reader some of his most mature thought on holiness and its application in daily life.

Beginning with an overview of the religious and societal milieu from the sixteenth century, and examining the heritage of John and Charles Wesley, the inheritance John Wesley took from the past is studied. The rise of the Anglican Unitary Societies is considered and Wesley's active work within those societies drawn out. The arrival of the Moravians in London in 1738 to form a group for Germans resident in London influenced many of the Anglican society members, not least the Wesley brothers. These influences are also considered before the Methodist movement, and particularly the Class Meeting are considered in detail. This book is unique in its drawing together the manner of religious association experienced in the Evangelical Revival and aims to show how Methodism was a fusion of pre-existing ideas, formed into a new working model of religious association. Paramount to the success of the early Methodist was the Class Meeting. This book draws on testimony, diary, and journal records to provide first-hand accounts of people's lives being changed through attendance at the Class Meeting and its making possible growth in grace and holiness. In the early period of Methodism the Class Meeting was the crown to Methodist identity. An analysis of the primary aims of this meeting, which gave the Methodist people their distinct characteristics, is followed by a study of the social identity and group processes that occurred when prospective members considered joining the Methodists. The decline of the Class Meeting to 1791 forms the concluding chapters, and, using three classic sociological models-Weber (routinisation), Durkheim (totemism), and Troeltsch (primary/secondary religion)-as themes, the reasons why the class became a cross are examined. Journal, diary, and testimonial material support the Methodists' declining interest in the class that led to its irrelevance for a people seeking respectability rather than an immediate encounter with God.

For nearly sixty years after his death, two women, Fletcher's widow and later her protege, had virtual charge of the parish, which became one of the last examples of Methodism within the Church of England.
