Eliza Frances Andrews, more commonly known as Fanny, was born in 1840 to world of pre-Civil War southern privilege; her father was a prominent judge in the region who owned two hundred slaves and a cotton plantation. Georgia's secession from the Union provoked many disagreements within Fanny's family, as it did with many others across the South. Her father firmly opposed secession, fearing it would be lead to the destruction of their way of life, while Fanny and the rest of family supported the Rebel cause, indeed three of her brothers went on to fight for the Confederacy. Fanny did not record the first three years of the conflict, but as she began to be increasingly surrounded by death and destruction she decided to begin records the events that she witnessed. John Inscoe, editor of the New Georgia Encyclopedia, found the book particularly notable for the account of Sherman's devastating March to the Sea and "her harrowing retreat from her home in Washington; as [Sherman's] Union forces approached, she moved across ravaged areas to find refuge at her sister's plantation in the southwestern part of the state." Fanny describes in brilliant detail the collapse of the traditional agrarian world of the South and how members of the old ruling class were forced to become refugees in their own state. While she worries about the arrival of Sherman's troops and their habit of pillaging and burning everything in their path, she records stories of visits by local raiders posing as U.S. soldiers and the sleepless nights she has spent watching fires on the horizon. Despite Lunt's efforts to hide her valuable possessions, which include sending her mules into the woods, dividing her stores of meat among the slaves, and burying the silver, the passing Union troops raid her house and plantation and take her slaves with them. They also set fire to cotton bales in her barn, but the blaze burns out before spreading, largely sparing Lunt's property the widespread destruction suffered by neighboring plantations. Book excerpt: Mary Boykin Chesnut (nee Miller, 1823-86) was an American author noted for her Civil War diary in which she described the war from within the upper-class circles of Southern planter society she inhabited. She was married to a lawyer who served as a US senator and Confederate officer, and the Chesnuts were family friends of President Jefferson Davis and his wife Varina Howell. They had close ties to the Confederate government, with generals John Bell Hood and Wade Hampton III among their acquaintances, and also many politicians, including John S Preston and Louis T Wigfall and their wives. Chesnut was aware of the historical importance of what she had witnessed and the extensive diary she had kept during the war years, commencing on 18 February 1861 and ending on 26 June 1865, covered the changing fortunes of the South as the war progressed, providing a detailed view of Southern society, the roles of men and women, and the complex situation regarding slavery. She worked on editing the diary from 1881-84, producing new drafts for publication, but it was not until 1905, 19 years after her death, that it was finally published. One of the editors of the published version, Myrta Lockett Avary (1857-1946), was an author and journalist specialising in Southern history, who lived in Atlanta most of her life and contributed to many of its journals. She was also the author of Dixie After the War (1906). Includes 16 black and white illustrations.
