Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diaries and Letters of Philip Henry, M.A: Of Broad Oak, Flintshire, A. D. 1631-1696 IT is now nearly sixty years since the Life of Philip Henry - founded upon the account given by his son, Matthew Henry - was written by Sir John Bickerton Williams, esa. It is hoped that the great interest which that volume excited will be extended to the Diaries and Letters, which are now for the first time printed, almost as they stand in the originals. The present phase of public taste is rather to hear what men of note say for themselves, than what others say of them. Philip Henry's motto from Thomas a Kempis, 86728 722252? Gzzz' eme [ah/it, will explain why Anthony 53. Wood does not mention his name why people often describe him now as Matthew Henry's father why the late Dr. Words worth should, with a wise instinct, have included his life in the first edition of the Ecclesiastical Biographies, and why Churchmen generally should have called for its removal from that series. Book Vernacular Bodies

Download or read book Vernacular Bodies written by Mary Elizabeth Fissell and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making babies was a mysterious process in seventeenth-century England. Fissell uses popular sources - songs, jokes, witchcraft pamphlets, prayerbooks, popular medical manuals - to recover how ordinary men and women understood the processes of reproduction. Because the human body was so often used as a metaphor for social relations, the grand events of high politics such as the English Civil War reshaped popular ideas about conception and pregnancy. This book is the first account of ordinary people's ideas about reproduction, and offers a new way to understand how common folk experienced the sweeping political changes that characterized early modern England.

Book Patterns of Change in 18th century English

Download or read book Patterns of Change in 18th century English written by Terttu Nevalainen and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-09-06 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteenth-century English is often associated with normative grammar. But to what extent did prescriptivism impact ongoing processes of linguistic change? The authors of this volume examine a variety of linguistic changes in a corpus of personal correspondence, including the auxiliary do, verbal -s and the progressive aspect, and they conclude that direct normative influence on them must have been minimal. The studies are contextualized by discussions of the normative tradition and the correspondence corpus, and of eighteenth-century English society and culture. Basing their work on a variationist sociolinguistic approach, the authors introduce the models and methods they have used to trace the progress of linguistic changes in the “long” eighteenth century, 1680–1800. Aggregate findings are balanced by analysing individuals and their varying participation in these processes. The final chapter places these results in a wider context and considers them in relation to past sociolinguistic work. One of the major findings of the studies is that in most cases the overall pace of change was slow. Factors retarding change include speaker evaluation and repurposing outgoing features, in particular, for certain styles and registers.

Book Missionary Strategies in the New World 1610 1690

Download or read book Missionary Strategies in the New World 1610 1690 written by Catherine Ballériaux and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study is an intellectual and comparative history of French, Spanish, and English missions to the native peoples of America in the seventeenth century, c. 1610–1690. It shows that missions are ideal case studies to properly understand the relationship between religion and politics in early modern Catholic and Calvinist thought. The book aims to analyse the intellectual roots of fundamental ideas in Catholic and Calvinist missionary writings—among others idolatry, conversion, civility, and police—by examining the classical, Augustinian, neo-thomist, reformed Protestant, and contemporary European influences on their writings. Missionaries’ insistence on the necessity of reform, emphasising an experiential, practical vision of Christianity, led them to elaborate conversion strategies that encompassed not only religious, but also political and social changes. It was at the margins of empire that the essentials of Calvinist and Catholic soteriologies and political thought could be enacted and crystallised. By a careful analysis of these missiologies, the study thus argues that missionaries’ common strategies—habituation, segregation, social and political regulations—stem from a shared intellectual heritage, classical, humanist, and above all concerned with the Erasmian ideal of a reformation of manners.
