Download or read book Colonial Planning written by Barbu Niculescu and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-03 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonial Planning (1958) breaks new ground in its study of colonial development plans on a comparative basis. It starts with a summary of the statistical data for the 70 odd territories studied, including territorial incomes, capital accumulation, origin and size of planning finances and metropolitan contributions, both within and outside the plans. This section also discusses the validity and comparability of the data. The author then selects, with the help of the many contributions to the study of the problems of economic growth, those problems which seem especially relevant to administrative planning. After an outline of the historical developments which have led to the widespread acceptance of colonial planning in its then-current forms, he analyses the various types of planning machinery established both in the metropolitan centres and in the territories, traces their connections and attempts a classification of their organisational problems. Finally, he analyses and classifies the plans themselves, giving special attention to attempts at solving the problems of priorities. This work is based on administrative documents, and especially on the various colonial development plans put forward since the war: colonial development planning so far has been mainly an administrative exercise and its problems, methods, scope and aims can be best understood if studies within an administrative context.

Download or read book Rice and Beans written by Richard Wilk and published by Berg. This book was released on 2013-05-09 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rice and Beans is a book about the paradox of local and global. On the one hand, this is a globe-spanning dish, a simple source of complete nutrition for billions of people in hundreds of countries. On the other hand, in every place people insist that rice and beans is a local invention, deeply rooted in a particular history and culture. How can something so universal also be so particular? The authors of this book explore the specific history of the versions of rice and beans beloved and indigenous in cultures from Brazil to West Africa. But they also plumb the shared African, Native American and European trans-Atlantic encounters and exchanges, and the contemporary forces of globalization and nation-building, which combine to make rice and beans a powerful substance and symbol of the relationship between food and culture.
Download or read book Belize written by Michael D. Phillips and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1996 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belize, a small, newly independent country in Central America, has recently garnered a great deal of the world's attention with its commitment to the protection of the environment and its promotion of eco-tourism. This book presents a full and diverse picture of such a unique country and its history. It contains some of the best research presented at the Second Interdisciplinary Conference on Belize. The conference has succeeded in building a scholarly community for Belize scholars and in promoting the study of a country that has perhaps been unjustly understudied. The conference papers gathered in this book serve as an introduction to Belize and to current scholarship taking place in the country. Papers and their authors include: International Migration and the Ruralization of Belize, 1970-1991, Louis Woods, Joseph Perry, Jeffrey Steagall and Ronald Cossman; A History of Banking in Belize, Anthony Gabb; Predicting the Past and Preserving It for the Future: Modeling and Management of Ancient Maya Residential Sites, Scott Fedick; Population and Ethnicity of Belize, 1861, Michael Camille; The Festival of Arts: British Hunduran, Belizean, and National, Michael D.
