Book excerpt: Fission cross section measurements for a collection of uranium and plutoninm isotopes are presertly being made at LLL by using the 100-MeV electron linear accelerator as a pulsed source for neutrons. The cross sections are measured as a function of neutron energy from 15 MeV down to thermal energy by using the time-of-flight technique. For neutron energies above 1 MeV, a new method for determining absolute fission cross section ratios is used. This method, called the method of threshold cross sections, gives absolute fission cross section ratios without the need for determing the absolute masses of flssionable material within flssion chambers. An explanation of the threshold cross section method is given, and an example is cited for the absolute ratio sigma /sub f/(238): sigma /sub f/ (235) above 1 MeV. (auth).

Book excerpt: Data files of all available data of absolute cross section measurements of U-233, U-235, U-238 and Pu-239, and of the ratios of U-233, U-238, and Pu-239 to U-235 were assembled at Argonne National Laboratory for use by the two Working Groups. The data files of absolute cross sections included also data measured relative to one of the standard cross sections H(n, n), Li-6(n, .cap alpha.), and B-10(n, .cap alpha.), and the ratio data files included ratios derived from absolute values which were measured in an identical type of experiment by the same group of experimenters. The subject files (e.g., U-235-Absolute, or U-238/U-235-Ratio, etc.) consisted of ''Sets.'' These sets contained the data from one experimental group which may have been published at different times. The assembling of the files was started with an extract from the CSISRS data files of the National Neutron Cross Section Center at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Ratios were derived from quoted consistent sets of absolute cross sections, or from data which were actually measured as ratios but quoted as absolute values. The latter type of data was eliminated from the data files on absolute values. The files were improved by an extensive search for errors and data missing on the original CSISRS files at the time the extract was made. Other additions to the present subject files came from presentations made at this meeting and are described in the proceedings.

Book excerpt: A new activation technique has been developed for the measurement of the ratio of the capture cross section of uranium-238 and the fission cross section of uranium-235 in zero-energy fast reactors. This work was initiated because of the long-standing discrepancy between calculated values in this ratio and radiochemically measured values. The new technique is a direct counting method which does not involve chemical separation in any way. Measurements have been made in four ZPR-3 fast reactor assemblies, two with hard spectra and two with soft spectra. In all four cases the measured ratio was slightly higher, on the average, than the calculated value. This is in strong contrast with the past radiochemical measurements in ZPR-3 assemblies, which gave vales 16% less than calculation.
