Book An Investigation of the Relationships Among Perceptual Modality Temporality and Academic Achievement of Selected Middle School Sixth Seventh and Eighth Grade Students

Download or read book An Investigation of the Relationships Among Perceptual Modality Temporality and Academic Achievement of Selected Middle School Sixth Seventh and Eighth Grade Students written by Kathleen M. Zachow and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary foci of the study were to determine the relationships among perceptual modality, temporality, and academic achievement, and to develop implications for the academic counseling of middle school students based on the findings. The sample was composed of 613 students enrolled in Prineville Junior High School. The Edmonds Learning Style Identification Exercise, the metronome, and the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills were the instruments used to collect data. Five statistical tools were used in the analysis of data. The findings at the .05 level of significance were as follows: 1. There were no significant differences in perceptual modality mean scores for the three temporal groups. 2. There were no significant relationships between sex and temporal grouping (slow, medium, fast). 3. A significant relationship existed between grade level and temporal group. There was a higher concentration of sixth graders in the slow temporal group. 4. There was a significant difference between sex and the perceptual modality score of visualization. Males scored significantly higher. For the other three perceptual modality scores and sex, there was no significant differences. 5. There was no significant difference for grade level and perceptual modality mean scores. 6. There was no interaction for grade level and sex on perceptual modality mean scores. 7. There were no significant relationships among perceptual modality scores within each temporal group. 8. There were no significant relationships among academic achievement scores, preferred temporal pace, and perceptual modality scores. Implications for the academic counseling of middle school students stressed the importance of using visual materials in the curriculum for males, and the varying of instructional pace to accommodate differences in students' temporal paces.

Book Differences in Academic Achievement in Fit Healthy and Unfit 7th Grade Students

Download or read book Differences in Academic Achievement in Fit Healthy and Unfit 7th Grade Students written by David Pauls and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an abundance of research showing significant positive relationships between academic achievement and physical fitness. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between academic achievement and different levels of physical fitness. The participants were 283 7th grade students from a small, rural middle school in Northern California during 2011/12, 2012/13, 2014/15 academic school years. Academic achievement data came from the STAR (Standardized Testing and Reporting) test and CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Learning and Progress) test. Physical fitness data came from the FITNESSGRAM Physical Fitness Test. A MANOVA was performed on the academic achievement and physical fitness data. Using Pillai's Trace, there was not a significant difference between groups (number of fitness tests passed) and language arts and math achievement scores, v = .012, F(4, 560) = .838, p = .502. The results of this study do not confirm a significant positive relationship between academic achievement and physical fitness as demonstrated by prior research. Some variables that may have influenced results in the current study include higher student achievement and higher student Socio-Economic Status compared to statewide levels. The current study examined academic achievement and overall physical fitness, instead of examining certain aspects of physical fitness that have been shown to have the strongest correlation with academic achievement. Furthermore, low physical fitness performance standards, and the cross-sectional nature of the study, may have influenced results. Further research is needed into variables that influence student achievement as well determining amounts of vigorous physical activity and levels of physical fitness needed to produce desirable results.

Book Predicting Academic Achievement for Seventh Grade Language Arts Students Using the Seven Dimensions of the Multi Dimensional Assessment

Download or read book Predicting Academic Achievement for Seventh Grade Language Arts Students Using the Seven Dimensions of the Multi Dimensional Assessment written by Mary Rogers and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this correlational study was to test how accurately end of the year achievement scores can be predicted by using the seven dimensions of the Multi-Dimensional Assessment in the seventh grade language arts classroom in a southeastern Tennessee school district. The predictor variables were the seven dimensions of the MDA: community engagement, curriculum expectations, developmental perspectives, educational attitudes, faculty fidelity, leadership potential, and school climate. The criterion variable of interest, academic achievement, was generally defined as scores made on the Tennessee Department of Education state mandated test for seventh grade in reading/language arts, the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP). The research examined 265 student responses to the Multi-Dimensional Assessment given to seventh grade students in their language arts classes. A statistical positive correlation was found with developmental perspectives and educational attitudes and a negative correlation was found with community engagement of the MDA. The findings of this study allow educators to prioritize their focus on the non-academic components of education. The results assure educators that their focus on students' affective dimensions will show through standardized test scores. Future research in this area should include additional subject areas and grade levels. The data analysis chosen for this research study was the multiple regression.
