Book Statistical Differences in School Dropout Rates Between Hispanic and African American Adolescents

Download or read book Statistical Differences in School Dropout Rates Between Hispanic and African American Adolescents written by Jacqueri Lakeith Cannon and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a statistical difference in the high school dropout rate among African American and Hispanic students within a three year academic period (2006-2009). The null hypothesis was there is not a statistical difference in the dropout rate between the two minority groups. A preliminary descriptive analysis examined demographic data from the Georgia Department of Education’s website regarding the school system under study. This study compared the total enrollment for the years involved and disaggregated the data further to determine the dropout rates. Based on the findings using the Chi-square statistic, the null hypothesis was not rejected because there is no difference in dropout rates between African American and Hispanic students.

Book An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Dropout Variables And The Race And Gender Of High School Students

Download or read book An Analysis Of The Relationship Between Dropout Variables And The Race And Gender Of High School Students written by Eddie M. Jones and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between dropout variables and the race and gender of high school students in a mid-south suburban school district. Data was collected on 353 dropouts and 316 graduates that attended one of the district’s eight high schools between the years 2006 - 2011. Variables selected for study included ethnicity, gender, special education classification, socioeconomic status, retention occurrences, absentee rates, behavioral infractions, and grade point average. Descriptive statistics, Correlations, Tests for Differences, and Logistic regression analysis were run to determine both the predictability of these variables and their relationship among the two ethnic and gender groups. The analysis also provided the answers to thirteen research questions posed. Results from the various analyses revealed the variable grade point average was the best predictor for dropout occurrences. In each Hierarchical Logistic Regression model run, grade point average was highly significant. In the absence of grade point average, however, the other identified dropout variables became significant depending on which specific ethnic and/or gender group was being analyzed. Since the results of this quantitative research provide a method for predicting dropout occurrences, both school district administrators and legislators could use a similar data collection and regression testing to predict dropout rates across this nation. Having this accurate knowledge would prove beneficial in establishing intervention programs, allocating resources for prevention, and implementing appropriate graduation policies. Additionally, educators and other practitioners can better comprehend the impact that these variables have upon specific gender and ethnic groups. To this end, educators will be able to pinpoint the areas of need and develop effective intervention strategies that will aid in reducing the dropout rate.

Book Dropout Rates in the United States 2000

Download or read book Dropout Rates in the United States 2000 written by Phillip Kaufman and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the 13th in a series that focuses on high school dropout and completion rates, presenting data on 2000 rates and including time series data on high school dropout and completion rates for 1972-00. In addition to extending time series data reported in earlier years, this report examines the characteristics of high school dropouts and high school completers in 2000. It shows that while progress was made during the 1970s and 1980s in reducing high school dropout rates and increasing high school completion rates, these rates remained comparatively stable during the 1990s. Data are presented on event and status dropout rates and high school completion rates, with statistics on income, race/ethnicity, age and sex, and region and state. Overall, in October 2000, 5 out of every 100 youths enrolled in high school in October 1999 had dropped out. They accounted for approximately one-half million of the 10 million people age 15-14 years enrolled in high school in the previous October. Four appendices, which comprise half of the report, feature standard error tables for text tables, tables in support of figures, supplemental tables, and technical notes. (Contains 27 tables and 6 figures.) (SM)

Book Who Drops Out of High School

Download or read book Who Drops Out of High School written by Stephen M. Barro and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study examines the influence of personal and family background attributes, economic and locational factors, school characteristics and educational experiences, and certain student behaviors and choices on the decision to leave high school be fore graduation. Special attention is given to intergroup differences, attempting to sort out the factors responsible for disparities between male and female and among white, black, and Hispanic dropout rates. These analyses, which empty both the descriptive statistics and the multivariate event-history method, are based on data from the High School and Beyond (HS&B) survey of the sophomore class of 1980.

Book An Examination of the Association Between the Graduation Coach Program and Georgia s Graduation Rate

Download or read book An Examination of the Association Between the Graduation Coach Program and Georgia s Graduation Rate written by Wardell C. Hunter and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: As result of the dropout problem in the United States and in Georgia, many school systems around the nation have placed much emphasis on reducing the incidents of students dropping out of high school. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between the graduation coach program and Georgia's graduation rate of over a 7 year period of time, 2004-2010. The research sought to determine if differences existed between graduation rates pre the induction of the graduation coach programs and post the induction of the graduation coach program when controlling for variables such as, school locale, free and reduced lunch percentages, science achievement data and race and ethnicity percentages. I used quantitative design to gather descriptive statistics and to test differences in means scores pre and post the induction of the graduation coach program. The participants were 343 public high schools in the state of Georgia with pre coach program graduation rates and post coach program graduation rates. The spreadsheet was developed so that pre graduation coach program data and post graduation coach data was easily distinguishable. The data set contained statistical information on all 343 schools with pre and post graduation rate data. The results of this study indicate that graduation rates were statistically significant higher after the induction of the graduation coach program when compared to the period prior to the induction of the graduation coach program. In fact, this advantage persisted across city high schools, rural high schools, suburban high schools, town high schools, metropolitan Atlanta high schools and high schools outside of metropolitan Atlanta. However, when looking at Atlanta Public Schools, Dekalb County Schools and Clayton County Schools, no significant difference was found for Atlanta Public Schools.

Book Gender Differences in Graduation Rates

Download or read book Gender Differences in Graduation Rates written by Caleb Longest and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following study was conducted to determine if there was a difference in graduation rates among genders. The study focuses on the 2011, 2012, and 2013 school years in the Midwestern part of the United States. The graduation rates of male and female students over the 2011, 2012, and 2013 school years were analyzed to determine if there is a difference in the graduation rate among the genders as well as the overall graduation rates among the school districts. The study was conducted by randomly selecting 54 school districts in the Midwestern United States. Each of the 54 school districts was split into three categories. The three categories included female graduation rates, male graduation rates, and overall graduation rates of the 2011, 2012, and 2013 school years. The results of the study were determined through a series of t-tests over the three categories of data. Through data tables and graphs the results show that females had a higher graduation rate over each of the three school years and overall.

Book Gender Gaps in College and High School Graduation by Race Combining Public and Private Schools

Download or read book Gender Gaps in College and High School Graduation by Race Combining Public and Private Schools written by Duncan Chaplin and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year our college system gives twice as many bachelor's degrees (BAs) to African American females as males. Large gender gaps favoring women also exist for other groups. Indeed, on average our college system gives 35% more BAs to females than males across all racial and ethnic groups. Traditional explanations for this pattern have focused on what happens in college. In this brief we note that at least part of the story can be found in differences in high school graduation rates. While the differences in high school graduation rates are far smaller, the variations by race and gender follow the same pattern as those found in college. We find that our high schools are graduating about 23% more African-American females than males each year and our estimates suggest about a 4% difference that favors females across all ethnic groups. In order to conduct this analysis we build on methods of calculating public high school graduation rates used in previous Urban Institute work and enhance them by adding in graduates from private high schools. Book Factors that Reduce the Dropout Rate in High Poverty Schools in Georgia

Download or read book Factors that Reduce the Dropout Rate in High Poverty Schools in Georgia written by Michael Larinso Lewis and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Georgias dropout rate in the school year 2004-2005 was 5.0% while the nations rate was 9.4%. Dropout statistics show that some schools have lower dropout rates than others, especially those with similar demographics. This study examined six schools with similar demographics with high, average, and low dropout rates. This study sought to find out what are the factors that can reduce the dropout rate in high poverty schools in the state of Georgia. This study sought to find out additional questions that included: Why is it that some schools have low dropout rates while others have high dropout rates? What practices, strategies, or services are being implemented in those schools that have the low dropout rates? What factors exist between the compared schools that relate to culture and school environment? and Is the leadership behavior of the administration making the different in who drops out? This was a qualitative study that included in depth interviewing and triangulation of the researchers field notes, observations, and data retrieved from the schools policies and manuals. Interviews from five participants at each school that included two seniors at risk, two veteran teachers, and an administrator or counselor were recorded, transcribed and searched for common themes. Findings showed that schools that had a Zero 0 tolerance for unacceptable behavior had higher absenteeism of students with 15 days or more were the schools that had high dropout rates. Schools that had a faculty and staff that provided nurturing and care to include rewards, dining out in expensive restaurants, and providing students with whatever they needed had low dropout rates. The researcher implicated that schools with a Zero 0 Tolerance policy might want to examine other ways of handling inappropriate behavior and high dropout rate schools might want to consider staff development on building relationships; also schools might want to consider research implementing a ninth grade academy to help make the transition from middle to high school easier.

Book Differences in Dropout Rates General Education Development Recipient Rates High School Graduation Rates as a Function of School Size for Students in Poverty

Download or read book Differences in Dropout Rates General Education Development Recipient Rates High School Graduation Rates as a Function of School Size for Students in Poverty written by Amy Renee Ambrose and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archival data from the Texas Education Agency Academic Performance Report were analyzed to examine the relationships between high school enrollment size and dropout rates, GED recipient rates, and graduation rates for students in poverty. Statistically significant differences were determined in dropout rates and graduation rates for students in poverty as a function of high school size. In both school years, high schools with lower student enrollment had higher dropout rates and lower graduation rates for student in poverty than high schools with higher numbers of students enrolled. Only for 2014, were the 4-year longitudinal GED recipient rates the highest in small size high schools when the UIL classifications were used. Implications of these results for policy and for practice are provided. The electronic version of this dissertation is accessible from http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11875/2180
