Book Faculty Members Scholarly Learning Across Institutional Types

Download or read book Faculty Members Scholarly Learning Across Institutional Types written by Vicki L. Baker and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-08-22 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore an important, yet understudied concept: faculty scholarly learning. Taking a broad view, this volume explains how scholarly learning is defined and conceptualized by scholars. The authors synthesize the recent literature and organize the findings according to Boyers four forms of scholarship (discovery, teaching, engagement, and integration). They then offer a counternarrative to faculty scholarly learning and the ways in which it is enacted and supported. Recommendations for developing, supporting, and evaluating faculty scholarly learning are also presented. This volume answers: What does scholarly learning look like at different types of institutions? What contexts and/or supports hinder or help faculty members scholarly learning at the different institutional types? What challenges are noted in the extant literature on faculty work around further study or better understanding of faculty members scholarly learning across institutional types? This is the second issue of the 43rd volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Centrality of institutional data is key when making decisions related to a range of academic programs. This volume addresses with both depth and breadth: various types of academic programing (i.e. academic degrees, research centers/institutes), diverse institutional types including community colleges, doctoral/research universities, minority-serving and for-profit institutions, and concrete examples and steps regarding how to utilize institutional data to improve academic planning and development. This is the 168th volume of this Jossey-Bass quarterly report series. Timely and comprehensive, New Directions for Institutional Research provides planners and administrators in all types of academic institutions with guidelines in such areas as resource coordination, information analysis, program evaluation, and institutional management.

Book Beyond Academic Departments

Download or read book Beyond Academic Departments written by Stanley Oliver Ikenberry and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: University-based institutes and centers were examined in terms of their origins, structure, functions, characteristics, control, and their role in the university. It is suggested that institutes and centers enable higher education institutions to accept new responsibilities and pursue them in new ways. A combination of societal, professional, and institutional forces contributed to the rapid growth of institutes and centers, including the growing dependence of society on scientific and technological innovation and the related availability of funding for research and development. The functions carried out by institutes are usually more restricted than those of departments and usually are confined to one or two combinations, such as the performance of research, the administration of public service, or the facilitation of instruction and research. Three general types of institutes are identified: standard institutes, which resemble the typical bureaucratic organization; adaptive institutes which are more likely to use part-time and temporary personnel and to shift programs to meet changing resources and needs; and "shadow institutes," which are sometimes dormant but represent a capacity for meeting needs when they arise. Among the contributions of institutes are that they allow the institution to emphasize problem-oriented research or public service and that they are effective for interdisciplinary efforts. Recommendations to strengthen the role of institutes and centers within the university are offered. (SW)

Book Performance Funding for Higher Education What Are the Mechanisms What Are the Impacts

Download or read book Performance Funding for Higher Education What Are the Mechanisms What Are the Impacts written by Kevin J. Dougherty and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After first appearing in 1979 in Tennessee, performance funding for higher education went on to be adopted by another 26 states. This monograph reviews research on a multitude of states to address these questions: • What impacts does performance funding have on institutional practices and, ultimately, student outcomes? • What obstacles and unintended effects do performance funding encounter? This monograph finds considerable impacts on institutional practices, weak impacts on student outcomes, substantial obstacles, and sizable unintended impacts. Given this, the monograph closes with a discussion of the implications for future research and for public policymaking on performance funding. This is the 2nd issue of the 39th volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.
