Book Comparison of Sophomore and Senior Baccalaureate Nursing Students Attitudes Toward Older Adults

Download or read book Comparison of Sophomore and Senior Baccalaureate Nursing Students Attitudes Toward Older Adults written by Mary P. Shortreed and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ageism is prevalent in society and healthcare. Research has shown that nurses and nursing students do not prefer to care for older adults. With the percentage of older adults increasing, by 2030 one in five Americans will be over the age of 65. The current nursing shortage is increasing as the population increases. This growth in the older adult population will further increase the demand for nurses. Although many related studies have not been conducted in the United States, results are conflicting whether nursing students enter their education with negative attitudes towards the older adult or if they develop negative attitudes during the education and socialization process. Little is known regarding the effect of gender on these attitudes. The purpose of this study was to compare sophomore and senior baccalaureate nursing students’ attitudes toward older adults, using a cross-sectional comparative descriptive design. The convenience sample included all sophomore and senior baccalaureate nursing students at a Midwest university in the United States. Of the possible 179 students, 177 chose to participate, and this study was completed prior to the sophomores attending any clinical experiences. Attitudes were measured using the Kogan’s Attitude Toward Old People Scale (KATOP) and Work Preference Ranking. On the KATOP scale, both sophomore and senior nursing students had very positive attitudes toward older adults. As most research has shown nursing students having negative attitudes on this scale, this study was not consistent with the literature. Related to work preference ranking, most of the literature shows nursing students ranking caring for older adults low upon entering a nursing program, with these rankings becoming more negative over time. This study showed that although students consistently preferred to care for populations other than older adults, there was no statistical difference between sophomore and senior students’ attitudes toward older adults. Gender had no effect on attitudes toward older adults on the KATOP or work preference rankings. This study did show statistical significance for students who had previous experience caring for older adults compared to students with no experience. Students with this experience were more likely to rank caring for older adults more favorably. This study will add to the body of literature in the United States regarding nursing students’ attitudes towards older adults by showing that although nursing students do not prefer to care for older adults compared with other patient populations, their attitudes toward this age group are very positive.

Book Student Nurses Attitudes Toward the Elderly After a Hospice Clinical Experience

Download or read book Student Nurses Attitudes Toward the Elderly After a Hospice Clinical Experience written by Vicki Ann McLeod and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the next ten years, the United States will face the greatest shift in demographics in history. Worldwide, the baby boomer generation is aging quickly, most importantly, who will provide nursing care to this group of people who will also require the greatest proportion of health care resources. Current research reveals very few baccalaureate student nurse graduates express interest in self-selecting gerontology as a career choice. The purpose of this qualitative study (N=8) was to identify why new registered nurses do not choose gerontology as a career choice. The sources of data for the study were comprised of a demographic profile of each student, students' journals and the researcher's notes from the students' responses to twelve scripted questions. The most salient themes identified as to why new registered nurses do not self-select gerontology as a career specialty, were: ageism; unsatisfactory professional mentors and role models; feelings of powerlessness to change the long-term care nursing model of long term care facilities, and inadequate academic and clinical preparation to feel competent care giving to the elderly population.

Book Improving Student Nurses Attitudes Towards the Elderly

Download or read book Improving Student Nurses Attitudes Towards the Elderly written by Maria Mackey and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elderly population is projected to nearly double by the year 2030. With the increased number of elderly needing healthcare and concerns of ageist attitudes towards the elderly, student nurses need to have a better understanding of this patient population and the implications of providing biased care. Research indicates that there are multiple variables that help form attitudes about the elderly, and the positive influence of education. Using Kogan's (1961) Attitudes Towards Old People scale, this project surveyed attitudes of pre-licensure diploma level nursing students, both before and after the completion of a seven-week gerontology specific course, guided by Miller's (1990) Functional Consequences Theory for Promoting Wellness in Older Adults. Using an independent-samples t-test, before gerontology ATOP total scores were compared to after gerontology ATOP total scores to determine if the gerontology specific education improved student nurses' attitudes toward the elderly. The findings of this project demonstrated no significant difference in scores for before and after, suggesting that the intervention of gerontology specific education had no impact as a strategy to improve student attitudes. The lack of improvement may be a result of students already having positive attitudes. Another reason that the results may have failed to demonstrate an improvement in student attitudes after gerontology education, was the sample size which may have been too small to capture a change that may have occurred with a larger sample size.
