Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Descriptive Bibliography: Of the Most Important Books in the English Language, Relating to the Art History of Engraving and the Collecting of Prints Many books have been written about Print Collecting and the Art and History of Engraving. Some of them are very exhaustive, some are models of learning and accuracy, and all are an endless source of pleasure and profitable information to the collector of prints and the student of the literature relating thereto. One desiring technical information can find important works dealing fully with all branches of the art of engraving, and the general collector, or the collector of prints by or after particular artists, can find accurate and comprehensive lists and catalogues minutely describing the various prints and their states. There are dictionaries of artists, of monograms, watermarks, and marks of print-collectors, histories, biographies, and bibliographies - general and special - and in many languages. The number of English books on the subject is large, but one must consult those in other languages for information relative to some branches. For marks and monograms of engravers one turns to Nagler (German), for watermarks to Briquet (French), as there are no English books dealing in a comprehensive way with these subjects. On the other hand some English books have not their equal abroad; for instance, Fagan's "Collectors' Marks" is the only one on the subject, and Hind's "Short History of Engraving and Etching," and Mrs. Frankau's "Eighteenth Century Colour Prints," are better than many excellent similar books published abroad. Book excerpt: "This book offers a comprehensive guide to descriptive bibliography--the activity of describing books as physical objects. The function of descriptive bibliography is to provide detailed historical accounts of the varied material forms in which texts have been transmitted and to show the relationships among those examples that claim to carry texts of the same work. The first part of this book contains five essays on general topics: an introduction to the field and its history; its relation to library cataloguing; the concept of ideal copy; the meanings of edition, impression, issue, and state; and tolerances in reporting details. The second part covers more specific subjects: transcription and collation; format; paper; typography and layout; typesetting and presswork; non-letterpress material; publishers' bindings, endpapers, and jackets; and overall arrangement. At the end is an appendix containing a sample description with detailed commentary, followed by a record of the literature of descriptive bibliography"--

Download or read book How to Find Out About the Arts written by Neville Carrick and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Find Out About the Arts: A Guide to Sources of Information discusses the main sources of information, printed or otherwise, in the field of the arts. The book begins by describing where information on art careers can be found. Separate chapters then discuss how information on art can be traced in libraries by means of the catalogue and classification scheme; and turning to bibliographies when information on a particular aspect of art cannot be traced by these means. Subsequent chapters deal with sources such as encyclopedias and dictionaries, general indexes to reproductions and portraits, works on iconography, periodicals, directories, yearbooks, and sales records. This book aims to serve some of the needs of the student of art, the experienced artist, and indeed all of those with an intelligent interest in the arts. In particular, it should help those in libraries, colleges, and other educational institutions whose task it is to guide others to the right sources.
