Book A Study of the Perceptions of New North Texas Assistant Principals on Administrative Preparation Programs

Download or read book A Study of the Perceptions of New North Texas Assistant Principals on Administrative Preparation Programs written by Larry D. Croy and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to examine the perceptions of new K-12 assistant principals in suburban North Texas school districts related to their level of preparation upon obtaining their first assistant principal positions. A purposive sample of 16 new assistant principals participated in semistructured interviews and a focus group. The interviews and the focus group conversation were recorded and transcribed. In vivo coding and structural coding were used to analyze the data. The findings of the study confirmed that the participants of the study overwhelmingly believed that their principal preparation programs did not adequately prepare them for the assistant principalship. However, despite their belief in the inadequacy of their preparation programs, the majority of the participants believed that they could be successful in their roles as assistant principals. Confidence in their ability to succeed was attributed to previous job experiences, encouragement from peers and mentors, and vicarious experiences. Participants indicated that they were most prepared for the responsibilities associated with instructional leadership, whereas they were least prepared for managing their time and the amount of work they were exposed to on a daily basis. Principal preparation programs and local school districts play important roles in the preparation of aspiring assistant principals, and the results of this study could be used to influence preparation processes in both of those settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes a much needed contribution to what we know about the role and work of the assistant principal. It offers terri c insights into the different challenges one faces after being appointed assistant principal, and it provides readers with a rich array of data regarding the mental, emotional, social, and physical adjustments accompanying one’s transition to this new role. The author refreshingly moves beyond mere description of what assistant prin- pals do as they make their transition to that role, and actually helps us gain a sense of the lived experience of becoming and being an assistant principal. The book gives a realistic picture of the cognitive, social, and emotional con icts and confusions, the daily ups and downs, the fears, frustrations, and highs that are experienced by the men and women undertaking the passage from teaching to administration. This book is distinctive for a number of reasons. It is an empirical study of the role of the assistant principal. There are comparatively few helpful studies, and P- fessor Armstrong’s research adds a solid and much needed addition to that body of work. It focuses on the transition from being a teacher to being an assistant prin- pal, and it reveals much about how the assistant principal’s role transition differs markedly from that of the school principal.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assistant principal is often overlooked in school leadership literature, yet in recent years has grown to be a vital part of secondary schools (Marshall & Hooley, 2006). This descriptive study seeks to expand on the work of Marshall and Hooley (2006), which serves as a primer in the study of assistant principals. In an era of increased accountability, this study explores how assistant principals balance the needs of students, teachers, parents, and constituents? This descriptive study seeks to understand the work that secondary school assistant principals do, how assistant principals are trained, the challenges they face, and their job satisfaction in a midsized Midwestern city. This study explores assistant principals from grades six through twelve with various levels of education, experience, and career aspirations to build a deeper understanding of their roles as assistant principals.

Book The Role of School Assistant Principals and Their Perceptions Regarding the Characteristics and Culture of a Good School

Download or read book The Role of School Assistant Principals and Their Perceptions Regarding the Characteristics and Culture of a Good School written by Ted J. Landry and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the literature, leadership and culture are intertwined. Organizational and leadership theorists alike hold that a leader's perceptions and behaviors are significant, if not primary, determinants of an organization's culture and climate. Given that the assistant principal is exceeded in positional authority only by the principal at a school and the fact that assistant principals will have an impact in all visible and inner workings of the school, there is a need to examine the relationship between the assistant principal's leadership perspectives and school culture by studying the perceptions and beliefs of assistant principals. The purpose of the study is to examine the beliefs and perceptions of assistant principals regarding the factors necessary for a school to be considered a good school, and how they describe the culture and climate of good schools. This study is an exploratory inquiry using a subset of the archived data from a much larger, multi-phase study of principals and assistant principals in the Gulf Coast Region of Southeast Texas. The participants, 371 current campus assistant principals, were surveyed by using a combination of traditional survey and cognitive interviewing techniques to address questions related to assistant principal perceptions regarding the characteristics of a good school and how they would describe the culture of a good school. Six major themes were identified from the responses for each of the two research questions. The themes were given the following operational definitions: Student Achievement; Professional Learning Communities; Positive Climate; Strong Leadership; Parental & Community Involvement; Student Discipline (research question one); and Valuing the Student (research question two). The results of the analysis indicated that the comprehensive nature of the roles asked of the assistant principal puts them in a position to be qualified, almost uniquely so, to render a perspective on what is good in schools and what good schools look like. This study demonstrates, through the perceptions of assistant principals, that for a school to be considered "good," it must do so by first establishing a strong, healthy culture that is conducive to not only learning, but to the well-being of the whole individual, both adult and student.

Book New Voices in the Field

Download or read book New Voices in the Field written by Gary N. Hartzell and published by Corwin. This book was released on 1995-04-25 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virtually every secondary school in the United States with an enrollment over 600 students has at least one assistant principal. The position is critical to the operation of a school, and, for most secondary school principals and many district superintendents, the assistant principalship is their gateway to administration. New assistant principals find this new leadership role quite a change from their previous work as teachers. For them and others considering a move into administration, this new book is the next best thing to being there. Hartzell, Williams, and Nelson take you inside the role - as told to them by 90 first-year assistant principals working in secondary schools.
