Download or read book Injustice Inc written by Daniel L. Hatcher and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-02-21 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Injustice, Inc., Daniel L. Hatcher exposes how justice systems are harnessing America's history of racial and economic inequality into revenue-generating operations. Courts, prosecutors, probation, policing departments, and detention facilities are trading away ethics and justice to churn vulnerable children and adults into an unconstitutional factory enterprise. These justice institutions are entering contracts to make money removing children from their homes, monetizing harm from juvenile delinquency, child welfare and child support proceedings, extorting fines and fees, collaborating with private debt collectors, enforcing unpaid child labor, seizing property, incentivizing arrests and evictions, maximizing occupancy in detention and 'treatment' centers, and more. Hatcher details the disproportionately racialized harm and unconstitutionality of the injustice enterprise, and calls for opened eyes to our justice system failings--to walk a better path toward instilling truth into the words 'Equal Justice Under Law'"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years proposals for gun control and the ownership of firearms have been among the most contentious issues in American politics. For public authorities to make reasonable decisions on these matters, they must take into account facts about the relationship between guns and violence as well as conflicting constitutional claims and divided public opinion. In performing these tasks, legislators need adequate data and research to judge both the effects of firearms on violence and the effects of different violence control policies. Readers of the research literature on firearms may sometimes find themselves unable to distinguish scholarship from advocacy. Given the importance of this issue, there is a pressing need for a clear and unbiased assessment of the existing portfolio of data and research. Firearms and Violence uses conventional standards of science to examine three major themes - firearms and violence, the quality of research, and the quality of data available. The book assesses the strengths and limitations of current databases, examining current research studies on firearm use and the efforts to reduce unjustified firearm use and suggests ways in which they can be improved.

Download or read book The Papers of Jefferson Davis written by Jefferson Davis and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 1975-02-01 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The five-year period from 1841 to 1846 saw the beginning of Jefferson Davis’ political career. In this, the second volume of The Papers of Jefferson Davis, the documents cover Davis’ unsuccessful race for the state legislature, his selection as a Democratic state elector, his marriage to Varina Howell, his election to the U.S. House of Representatives, and his departure therefrom to assume command of the First Mississippi Regiment in the Mexican War. In the congressional documents Davis emerges as a hardworking freshman representative who quickly won for himself the respect and esteem of his fellow congressmen. There were, however, notable exceptions. One such exception was Andrew Johnson, a tailor by trade, who strongly resented Davis’ remark on the floor of the House that a “blacksmith or tailor” could not be expected to achieve the same results in battle as a trained military man. In the somewhat bitter exchange that followed, some have professed to see the beginnings of the long-standing animosity between Johnson and Davis. The 255 documents in this volume (two appendixes contain undated and late-arriving items) provide a clear picture of Jefferson Davis, the man and the politician, and give an intimate view of Mississippi in the 1840s. Throughout the volume are rumblings of the then distant storm that was to break so disastrously over the nation in the 1860s.
