Download or read book Fossil Ecosystems of North America written by Paul Selden and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2008-03-20 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most major recent advances in understanding the history of life on Earth have been through the study of exceptionally well preserved biotas (Fossil-Lagerstätten). These are windows on the history of life on Earth and can provide a fairly complete picture of the evolution of ecosystems through time. This book follows the success of Evolution of Fossil Ecosystems by the same authors which covered Fossil-Lagerstätten around the world. The success of the first book prompted this new book which draws on four localities from the original book and adds another ten, all located in North America. Following an introduction to Fossil-Lagerstätten, each chapter deals with a single fossil locality. Each chapter contains a brief introduction placing the Lagerstätte in an evolutionary context; there then follows a history of study of the locality; the background sedimentology, stratigraphy and palaeoenvironment; a description of the biota; discussion of the palaeoecology, and a comparison with other Lagerstätten of a similar age and/or environment. At the end of the book is an Appendix listing museums in which to see exhibitions of fossils from each locality and suggestions for visiting the sites.
Download or read book The Geology of Scotland 4th edition written by N. H. Trewin and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2003-02-24 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 4th edition of The Geology of Scotland is greatly expanded from the previous edition with 34 authors contributing to 20 chapters. A new format has been adopted to provide a different perspective on the geology of Scotland. A brief introduction is followed by a chapter outlining some of the important historical aspects that in the 19th century placed Scottish geologists in the forefront of a new science. Scotland is constructed from a number of terranes that finally combined in roughly their present positions prior to about 410 million years ago. Thus the geology of each terrane is described up the time of amalgamation, providing chapters on the Southern Uplands, Midland Valley, Highlands, Grampian and Hebridean terranes. At the end of this section, a brief synthesis summarizes the events that resulted in the amalgamation of the various terranes into the present configuration. Traditional practice is followed in the description of the Old Red Sandstone, Carboniferous, Permo-Trias, Jurassic, Cretaceous, tertiary and Quaternary strata. A separate chapter covers Tertiary igneous rocks. An attempt is made to tell the story of the geological evolution of Scotland, rather than catalogue all areas and formations. Priority is given to the onshore geology, encouraging the reader to go into the field and visit some of the world-class geology on show in Scotland. The chapters are broadly-based, attempting to integrate the sedimentary and igneous histories, and summarize changes in palaeogeography and palaeoenvironments. Economic aspects are covered with chapters on Metalliferous Minerals, Bulk Resources, Coal and Hydrocarbons. A new departure is the chapter on aspects of Environmental Geology and sustainability. Additionally, this publication contains a colour section of 32 plates, illustrating aspects of Scottish Geology, as well as a coloured geological map of Scotland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Minerals of Britain and Ireland is a treatment of the minerals found in Britain, Ireland and the surrounding islands. Beautifully illustrated throughout with over 550 colour and black & white images, the book provides exhaustive coverage of the remarkably wide range of minerals found in this part of the world." "By far the largest part of the book is the alphabetical listing of all the minerals described from Britain and Ireland. This includes species, varieties, synonyms, discredited minerals and fraudulent descriptions. The status of each mineral is clearly represented by distinctive formatting. All type localities are also described. The treatment is enriched with biographical information on all those individuals who have had minerals named after them; it describes all the major mineral collections in national and local museums and university departments; and it summarizes the geological conditions in the major orefields that produced so many of the minerals." "Minerals of Britain and Ireland is replete with bibliographical references and it describes many additional discoveries never previously published. Coverage includes all relevant articles from national mineralogical organizations such as the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland {from 1876) and the Russell Society {from 1982). Journals such as the UK Journal of Mines and Minerals, Mineralogical Record and Mineral Realm are referred to extensively, as are many geological journals with mineralogical content."--BOOK JACKET.
