Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Defence of the Use of the Bible in the Public Schools: Argument of Henry F. Durant, Esq., In the Eliot School Case The spectacle which is presented to-day in this court is indeed novel and strange. A worthy teacher of one of our principal public schools, who is bound by our wise and benevolent laws to impart the great gifts of free instruction in piety and morality and learning to his pupils, is arraigned as a criminal - arraigned by one of his own pupils at the bar of this court as a criminal because he has attempted to do his duty - because he has obeyed that ancient, wise and beneficent law, which in words of simple and familiar beauty enjoined upon him to impress upon the minds of the children committed to his care, those principles of piety, justice, love of country, humanity and universal bonevo lence, which are the basis of a Republican government and tend to secure the blessings of liberty. Book A Defense of the Bible As a Schoolbook

Download or read book A Defense of the Bible As a Schoolbook written by Benjamin Rush and published by . This book was released on 2019-02-14 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until 1947 and following, the Christian religion exercised considerable influence upon the school children of America. In fact, a thorough study of the history of American education will reveal that from the very beginning of English colonization, Bible reading and prayer was an important part of the classroom. The personal writings and official government proceedings of the colonial era through the middle of the twentieth century clearly indicate that America's Founding Fathers never intended for the Christian faith to be pushed from America's classroom or from the public arena in general. Dr. Benjamin Rush was one of three of the most important Founding Fathers--the other two being George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. Dr. Rush was one of the most deeply committed evangelical leaders of the Founders and exercised considerable influence upon American life prior to and following the American Revolution. In his essay, A Defense of the Use of the Bible as a Schoolbook, Dr. Rush addressed his thoughts on this important matter to Rev. Jeremy Belknap, of Boston. To truly understand how important this matter was to one of the most important Founding Fathers, you too will also wish to read Dr. Rush's essay, A Defense of the Use of the Bible as a Schoolbook.

Book The Place of the Bible in Education

Download or read book The Place of the Bible in Education written by Alonzo T. Jones and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian education has all but disappeared from the majority of educational systems around the world. As governments limit or banish God from among our schools in the name of "separation of church and state," we find the very foundation upon which many schools began disintegrating before our eyes. This is not a new problem. Over the centuries people have had the same concern of what is true education and the place of religion in the educational system. Among these were the newly devoted Christians arising from the Great Advent movement sweeping North America during the 18th and 19th century. Author Alonzo T. Jones, an important figure in Great Advent movement, felt that Christians should take a solid look at the educational systems of that day. Jones believed that true Christian education was the only becoming choice to Christians. In The Place of the Bible in Education, he outlines according to the Bible what exactly Christian education looks like. He also explores the true meaning of the separation between church and state and how Christian education does not fall under such discrimination. In this book, he discusses how secular education falls short of even the true meaning of education and how this has an adverse affect on our young people. Jones shows how there is a Biblical precedent for true education and how the Bible should and can become part of the educational system.

Book Dr Benjamin Rush

Download or read book Dr Benjamin Rush written by Harlow Giles Unger and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gripping, often startling biography of the Founding Father of an America that other Founding Fathers forgot--an America of women, African Americans, Jews, Roman Catholics, Quakers, indentured workers, the poor, the mentally ill, and war veterans Ninety percent of Americans could not vote and did not enjoy rights to life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness when our Founding Fathers proclaimed, "all men are created equal." Alone among those who signed the Declaration of Independence, Benjamin Rush heard the cries of those other, deprived Americans and stepped forth as the nation's first great humanitarian and social reformer. Remembered primarily as America's leading, most influential physician, Rush led the Founding Fathers in calling for abolition of slavery, equal rights for women, improved medical care for injured troops, free health care for the poor, slum clearance, citywide sanitation, an end to child labor, free universal public education, humane treatment and therapy for the mentally ill, prison reform, and an end to capital punishment. Using archival material from Edinburgh, London, Paris, and Philadelphia, as well as significant new materials from Rush's descendants and historical societies, Harlow Giles Unger's new biography restores Benjamin Rush to his rightful place in American history as the Founding Father of modern American medical care and psychiatry.
