Download or read book To a Distant Day written by Chris Gainor and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Insightful, instructive, and definitely worth the read."--Greg Andres, Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada "As someone who has been teaching a course on space exploration for many years and has visited most of NASA's space centers, I have found plenty of new and valuable material in To a Distant Day. . . . I recommend the book to all who wish to know more about the conditions, people, and discoveries between 1890 and 1960 that led to the space age."--Pangratios Papacosta, Physics Today Although the dream of flying is as old as the human imagination, the notion of rocketing into space may have originated with Chinese gunpowder experiments during the Middle Ages. Rockets as both weapons and entertainment are examined in this engaging history of how human beings acquired the ability to catapult themselves into space. Chris Gainor's irresistible narrative introduces us to pioneers such as Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, Robert Goddard, and Hermann Oberth, who pointed the way to the cosmos by generating the earliest wave of international enthusiasm for space exploration. It shows us German engineer Wernher von Braun creating the V-2, the first large rocket, which, though opening the door to space, failed utterly as the "wonder weapon" it was meant to be. From there Gainor follows the space race to the Soviet Union and the United States, giving us a close look at the competitive hysteria that led to Sputnik, satellites, space probes, and--finally--human flight into space in 1961. As much a story of cultural ambition and personal destiny as of scientific progress and technological history, To a Distant Day offers a complete and thoroughly compelling account of humanity's determined efforts--sometimes poignant, sometimes amazing, sometimes mad--to leave the earth behind.

Download or read book Jimmie Rocket written by Jamie Herman and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-05-16 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are there signs of intelligent life on this planet? Those words certainly crossed the mind of ultra-intelligent nine-year-old James “Jimmy Rocket” Rockhurst, long before he and his family (including Bart, his beloved Labrador retriever) and 5,000 Earthlings launched into space on the Hephaestus. In Jimmy Rocket, a sci-fi/fantasy novel, everyone is cryogenically frozen before landing on a mineral-rich planet they dub “Ferrous,” where they form a fledgling society and begin to colonize its resources. When Jimmy discovers another sentient species, his curiosity and open-mindedness take him deep within the culture of aliens. Wise beyond his years, the youngster teaches the furry species English and takes part in a deadly skirmish with a rival alien troop. The ever-astute Jimmy soon realizes there’s a bigger foe lurking among the metal-laden forests: his fellow humans who seem intent on destroying the planet’s naturals resources and possibly its Indigenous inhabitants. Packed with adventure, Jimmy Rocket will ignite the imagination of youth audiences with its fast-paced scenes and lively hero who quickly comes of age when faced with the need to make difficult decisions and sacrifices. But there are deeper messages in this story—about environmentalism and embracing culture and difference—that are sure to resonate with adults, too.
Download or read book Alternatives for the Demilitarization of Conventional Munitions written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military has a stockpile of approximately 400,000 tons of excess, obsolete, or unserviceable munitions. About 60,000 tons are added to the stockpile each year. Munitions include projectiles, bombs, rockets, landmines, and missiles. Open burning/open detonation (OB/OD) of these munitions has been a common disposal practice for decades, although it has decreased significantly since 2011. OB/OD is relatively quick, procedurally straightforward, and inexpensive. However, the downside of OB and OD is that they release contaminants from the operation directly into the environment. Over time, a number of technology alternatives to OB/OD have become available and more are in research and development. Alternative technologies generally involve some type of contained destruction of the energetic materials, including contained burning or contained detonation as well as contained methods that forego combustion or detonation. Alternatives for the Demilitarization of Conventional Munitions reviews the current conventional munitions demilitarization stockpile and analyzes existing and emerging disposal, treatment, and reuse technologies. This report identifies and evaluates any barriers to full-scale deployment of alternatives to OB/OD or non-closed loop incineration/combustion, and provides recommendations to overcome such barriers.
