Download or read book Life in Cythera written by Charles Coddington and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-10 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Cythera, the jewel (more or less) of Mid-America, where anything can-and often does-go wrong! And, when it does go wrong, run for cover! America is at war (again) with one of its smaller neighbors, and the pros and cons are clearly delineated. Nowhere is this truer than in Cythera. Specifically, the student body of Cythera College is roused to protest America's foreign policy and is intent on speaking forcefully about it-hence, the anti-war rally. But, because anything in Cythera can-and often does-go wrong, the rally has no immunity from the city's curse. The road to Hell being paved with good intentions, the rally provides many paving stones, and the student body might have been better off (more or less) staying in bed. Be prepared to run for cover!

Book Waste Not Want Not

Download or read book Waste Not Want Not written by Robert Allen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No-one wants toxic waste dumped in their back yard. Dioxins and furans from incinerators, dangerous chemicals leaching from landfill sites and the apparently random dumping of nuclear waste are all clear threats to our health and lives. In fact any waste not properly dealt with can become dangerous - yet industry and state seem to collude recklessly in its production. Robert Allen describes the waste produced in Britain and Ireland and the woefully inadequate means of dealing with it. He looks, too, at governmental intransigence and dishonesty and at industry's refusal to consider the needs of local communities. He also gives an account of the available legislation governing toxic waste and the degree to which it will need radical change in the face of a rapidly growing problem. Waste dumping impinges on people's lives, and he examines some of the very successful campaigns against the many ill-considered dumping grounds. As governments only respond to pressure, there are valuable lessons to be learnt from these campaigns. This book sets out the nature of the problem and provides a basis on which to tackle it. Book excerpt: The first Earth Day is the most famous little-known event in modern American history. Because we still pay ritual homage to the planet every April 22, everyone knows something about Earth Day. Some people may also know that Earth Day 1970 made the environmental movement a major force in American political life. But no one has told the whole story before. The story of the first Earth Day is inspiring: it had a power, a freshness, and a seriousness of purpose that are difficult to imagine today. Earth Day 1970 created an entire green generation. Thousands of Earth Day organizers and participants decided to devote their lives to the environmental cause. Earth Day 1970 helped to build a lasting eco-infrastructure—lobbying organizations, environmental beats at newspapers, environmental-studies programs, ecology sections in bookstores, community ecology centers. In The Genius of Earth Day, the prizewinning historian Adam Rome offers a compelling account of the rise of the environmental movement. Drawing on his experience as a journalist as well as his expertise as a scholar, he explains why the first Earth Day was so powerful, bringing one of the greatest political events of the twentieth century to life.

An award-winning novelist, Wilson draws on colorful tales from his childhood in the American south, rousing episodes in history, and a remarkable assortment of poems, novels, and biblical readings, to illustrate the challenges children face and to illuminate the ways adults may best reach and teach them.
