Book On Patrol with the US Coast Guard

Download or read book On Patrol with the US Coast Guard written by Dana Stabenow and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-10-27 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Patrol with the US Coast Guard chronicles award-winning author Dana Stabenow's two research trips with the United States Coast Guard. Dana has written two thrillers, Blindfold Game and Prepared for Rage, and when researching both novels she went on patrol with the US Coast Guard, first on the Alex Haley for 16 days in the Bering Sea, and then on Munro for seven weeks off the coasts of Central and South America. Dana was invited to write a daily blog from the ship so the shore-bound families of the crew could witness, as much as possible, the lives their loved ones were living at sea. She poked her nose into every nook and cranny and interrogated most of the crew as to the particulars of their jobs. She found USCG to be one of the most hospitable communities in the world and nearly every door – or in this case, hatch – was flung wide open for her. Dana got to know the USCG in depth during her trips with them. She was in the circle around the captain as they planned the midnight rescue of an injured fisherman offshore of the Pribilof Islands. She got to jump off the side of the ship into the Pacific Ocean where it's 8,000 metres deep. And she got a king's ransom in the way of original source material for her novels' 'Coasties' heroes. The crew even helped her with plot points. As Dana says, 'The absolute best part of a writer's life is the research.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you think you know what cross stitch is, look again! The book is aimed at stitchers of all abilities, from absolute beginners looking to learn a new craft to embroiderers and cross stitchers who want to do something different in cross stitching. For many, cross stitch conjures up images of cute kittens and country cottages, but this book shows people that theres a different side to cross stitching that its an art in its own right, and will encourage them to be a little braver with their art. Jamies writing style is fun, entertaining and highly inspirational. The book aims to appeal to men as well as women, encouraging one and all to take up the ancient craft. It teaches the basics of cross stitching, including information on materials, tools, techniques and colour blending, but also puts Jamies own individual spin on it, with urban flavours and the introduction of different materials such as glow-in-the-dark threads and stitching on metal. As well as providing exciting designs to stitch, there is guidance on how to create cross stitch designs of your own, for example by using photographs and other images for reference. Jamie also showcases the work of other contemporary cross stitchers who are pushing the boundaries of their craft, and introduces more than 20 stunning cutting-edge projects to make, showing that beauty, innovation and 'craftivism' are alive and kicking in this inspirational book.

Book Whatever It Takes

Download or read book Whatever It Takes written by Ewen Hill and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1915, the world is in turmoil. A war, the likes of which has never been seen, involves much of the known world. An Englishman, John Norton Griffiths, proposes using miners to tunnel under the enemy lines and destroy them from below. Once his idea is accepted, other countries of the Empire decide to raise similar tunnelling companies. Canada, New Zealand and Australia provide companies of men, drawn from mining and trades backgrounds, to assist in the defeat of an aggressive enemy, intent on domination. These men are asked to do the unthinkable, in less than satisfactory settings. They dig long tunnels and blow up hundreds of men at a time, whilst all the time, not knowing how close the enemy was to them, trying to do the same thing. For these men it was a war in the dark, a war of nerves. Some held, some did not. We follow the life of one man through his wars, the one he is fighting without and the one he is fighting within, whilst at the same time, he falls in love, however improbable it may seem. We experience how the decisions of one person can continue to impact several generations after.
