Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans are caught up in an alien war in this epic from the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Trek Into Darkness. For millennia, the Weave, an alliance of species, have fought to resist the telepathic Amplitur, who strive to unite all self-aware life-forms in their great “Purpose.” The Weave is slowly losing ground, but for both sides, warfare focuses more on outthinking and outmaneuvering your foe than destruction. In fact, most regard violence as hideously barbaric, and even the thought of harming another sentient being is beyond imagining. Then they come to Earth . . . A Call to Arms When one of its scout ships lands on Earth, the Weave quickly realizes that humanity’s almost innate ability to wreak havoc and death may hold the key to turning the tide in their fight. Unfortunately for all, the Amplitur have the same idea—and mankind is caught in the middle. The False Mirror When the Amplitur unleash an elite cadre of fighters, it soon becomes clear that they have subjected their human prisoners to horrific genetic manipulation. But if the Weave attempts to undo the effects, they may change the former warriors into something far, far worse. The Spoils of War With mankind’s help, the Weave is finally on the verge of victory against the Amplitur. Until an alien scholar uncovers a terrifying truth: Earthlings might not even be capable of being civilized—and a shadowy group of powerful humans is already poised to unleash war across the entire galaxy. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Alan Dean Foster including rare images from the author’s collection.

Book excerpt: Twin brothers Borrial and Vistyral find themselves in conflict. The elder brother, Borrial, who is heir to the throne of Karrondor, has determined to conquer and enslave the known world. His younger twin brother by three minutes, Vistyral, is determined to keep peace in the world. Only Vistyral has the knowledge and capability to thwart Borrial's plans, but his futile hope that his brother will be satisfied ruling the largest kingdom in the world may keep Vistyral from moving against his brother until it is too late for anyone to stop him. Vistyral is in love with Mirtar, who is betrothed to Borrial. But Borrial does not want Mirtar; rather, he desires to marry Lymar, who is the princess of Fulsimter. Before releasing Mirtar from her betrothal, however, Borrial tries to rape Mirtar to leave a scar on her marriage with Vistyral. Every time Vistyral comes to her, she will see and feel Borrial attacking her. Fortunately, Vistyral is able to stop the assault. Mirtar forces Borrial to release her from the betrothal and offer independence to the duchy of Cryarlac, making Vistyral a king in his own right. There are several attempts on Vistyral's life. A series of events kills all of Lymar's family, making her the only living heir. Vistyral marries Mirtar and tells her that in spite of his deep love for her, he will remain publicly aloof to protect her from Borrial, who thinks all Vistyral wants from her is the kingdom of Artermador. Borrial marries shortly after Vistyral, and his father, Lamercal, soon abdicates the throne. Borrial then consolidates Artermador and Fulsimter into one country called Nordlund, giving him the largest army and the largest navy in the world. Having created a network of assassins Borrial sends several of them to kill Mirtar's parents, the king and queen of Artermador; Mirtar and Vistyral, the king and queen of Cryarlac; and the king of Westonisia, whom Borrial has framed for the death of Lymar's brother, the then king of Fulsimter. Vistyral calls a meeting of the council of the kings to ratify the combination of Cryarlac and Artermador into a new country called Surdlund.

Book excerpt: As a detailed study of the human animal, described by its author as the raison d'etre of nature, Book Seven of the elder Pliny's Natural History is crucial to the understanding of the work as a whole. In addition, however, it provides a valuable insight into the extraordinary complex of ideas and beliefs current in Pliny's era, many of which have resonances for other eras and cultures. The present study includes a substantial introduction examining the background to Pliny's life, thought, and writing, together with a modern English translation, and a detailed commentary which emphasizes the importance of Book Seven as possibly the most fascinating cultural record surviving from early imperial Rome.

Book excerpt: Rift in the Races (Book 2 of The Galactic Mage series) follows the continuing story of powerful Prosperion sorcerer Altin Meade and feisty Earth-fleet officer Orli Pewter in the fight against the mysterious alien Hostiles. The Earth fleet is now moving to take advantage of its recent victory. With better combat strategies and Prosperion wizards only a blink away, the time has come to finish the job they set out to do: destroying the Hostiles. But complications arise. Altin's discovery of space-traveling humans from distant Earth has threatened ancient and foundational beliefs for the people of his world. The shockwaves from this revelation begin to unravel a long-standing but precarious balance of power. With her eyes to the sky and all its galactic possibilities, Prosperion's War Queen soon finds her realm on the brink of chaos. Together, Altin and Orli must once again find a way to mediate the forces of pride, frustration and fear between their two peoples, or both planets will be destroyed. What ensues is an action-packed, laser-blasting magic ride through space, war, romance and conspiracy--a thrilling tale of alliances and alien hostility. Unfortunately, sometimes "alien hostility" is a matter of perspective. *** Rift in the Races is the second book in The Galactic Mage series. Book 1, The Galactic Mage, and Book 3, Hostiles, are now available. Book 4, Alien Arrivals, is underway and expected in summer 2014 and a prequel, Ilbei Spadebreaker and the Harpy's Wild, is expected in March 2014.

As the kids struggle to complete Teacher's challenges, they also start to ask questions. Questions about their life on the desert ranch, about Before and Beyond, about everything Teacher has told them. But the thing about questions—they can be dangerous. This moving novel—equal parts hope and heartbreak—traces one girl's journey for truth and meaning, from the smallest slip of paper to the deepest understanding of family. The world may have ended for the kids of the desert ranch . . . but that's only the beginning.
