Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the twilight of the Weimar Republic, politicians, scientists, and theologians were engaged in debates surrounding the so-called "Jewish Question." When the Nazi Party came to power in 1933, these discussions took on a new sense of urgency and poignancy. As state measures against Jews unfolded, theological conceptions of the meaning of "Israel" and "Judaism" began to impact living, breathing Jewish persons. In this study, Ryan Tafilowski traces the thought of the Lutheran theologian Paul Althaus (1888–1966), who once greeted the rise of Hitler as a "gift and miracle of God," as he negotiated the "Jewish Question" and its meaning for his understanding of Germanness across the Weimar Republic, the Nazi years, and the post-war period. In particular, the study uncovers the paradoxical categories Althaus used to interpret the ongoing theological significance of the Jewish people, whom he considered both an imminent threat to German ethnic identity and yet a mysterious cipher by which Germans might decode their own spiritual destiny in world history. Sketching the peculiar contours of Althaus' theology of Israel, this study offers a fresh interpretation of the Erlangen Opinion on the Aryan Paragraph, which is an important artifact not only of the Kirchenkampf, but also of the complex and ambivalent history of Christian antisemitism. By bringing Althaus into conversation with some of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century—from Karl Barth and Emil Brunner to Rudolf Bultmann and Dietrich Bonhoeffer—Tafilowski broadens the scope of his inquiry to vital questions of political theology, ethnic identity, social ethics, and ecclesiology. As Christian theologians must once again reckon with questions of national self-understanding under the pressures of mass migration and resurgent nationalisms, this investigation into the logic of ethno-nationalist theologies is a timely contribution.

Book Darkness Depression and Descent in Anglo Saxon England

Download or read book Darkness Depression and Descent in Anglo Saxon England written by Ruth Wehlau and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays examines the motifs of darkness, depression, and descent in both literal and figurative manifestations within a variety of Anglo-Saxon texts, including the Old English Consolation of Philosophy, Beowulf, Guthlac, The Junius Manuscript, The Wonders of the East, and The Battle of Maldon. Essays deal with such topics as cosmic emptiness, descent into the grave, and recurrent grief. In their analyses, the essays reveal the breadth of this imagery in Anglo-Saxon literature as it is used to describe thought and emotion, as well as the limits to knowledge and perception. The volume investigates the intersection between the burgeoning interest in trauma studies and darkness and the representation of the mind or of emotional experience within Anglo-Saxon literature.

Book The Answer to the Riddle Is Me

Download or read book The Answer to the Riddle Is Me written by David Stuart MacLean and published by HMH. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A deeply moving account of amnesia that . . . reminds us how we are all always trying to find a version of ourselves that we can live with.” —Los Angeles Times On October 17, 2002, David MacLean “woke up” on a train platform in India with no idea who he was or why he was there. No money. No passport. No identity. Taken to a mental hospital by the police, MacLean then started to hallucinate so severely he had to be tied down. He could remember song lyrics, but not his family, his friends, or the woman he was told he loved. The illness, it turned out, was the result of a commonly prescribed antimalarial medication he had been taking. Upon his return to the United States, he struggled to piece together the fragments of his former life. In this “mesmerizing, unsettling memoir about the ever-echoing nature of identity—written in vivid, blooming detail,” he tells the harrowing, absurd, and unforgettable story of his journey back to himself (Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl). “[MacLean] is an exceedingly entertaining psychotic. . . . [A] raw, honest and beautiful memoir.” —The New York Times “If bad things are going to happen, we are lucky when they happen to someone with the wit, humanity and sweetness—to say nothing of an eye for detail and a gift for pacing—that MacLean brings to this wrenching tale. . . . Readers who flip open the book will find MacLean, preserved between pages, goofy and serious, lost and found.” —Chicago Tribune “[MacLean] writes eloquently about the bizarre and disturbing experience of having his sense of self erased and then reconstructed from scratch.” —The New Yorker

Book Paradoxes Mysteries Riddles Enigmas and Comfort for Christians

Download or read book Paradoxes Mysteries Riddles Enigmas and Comfort for Christians written by Gerald C. Primm and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2002-05 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several years ago I republished the rare Spurgeon book, The Mourner's Comforter. The printing sold out in a very short time. I have plans to reprint that book again soon. The success of that book has had much to do with my undertaking this new reprint of some of Spurgeon's sermons on comfort and encouragement. It is especially suitable for persons who struggle with depression. Spurgeon was considered by many in his day as the greatest living preacher of the gospel. Since his death in 1892, his works have been reprinted by many publishers. His primary work was a sixty-three volume set of more than 3,000 sermons. Pilgrim Publications has reprinted the complete set of sermons, with a separate index of the Scripture texts and sermon titles, making it relatively easy to find material on almost any subject. These sermons have also been recorded on a CD ROM disk by the Ages Digital Library. It has been one of the great pleasures of my life to select, arrange, and edit the material in this book. The editing has been confined primarily to spelling (example: "labour" to labor, etc.). Some additions have been made, such as adding the first names of persons not as familiar to the public today. Some time references have been eliminated. For instance, statements such as, "I spoke to you on Thursday last week -- " have been removed as being irrelevant to the message. In some cases I have substituted a new word for one that is not familiarly used today. "Ship" or "boat" was substituted for "barque," etc. However, sentence structure has been left as originally written, and care has been taken not to change the meaning of any statements or doctrines expounded by Mr. Spurgeon. Gerald C. Primm, editor

Book Say what I Am Called

Download or read book Say what I Am Called written by Dieter Bitterli and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most enigmatic cultural artifacts that survive from the Anglo-Saxon period are the Old English riddle poems that were preserved in the tenth century Exeter Book manuscript. Clever, challenging, and notoriously obscure, the riddles have fascinated readers for centuries and provided crucial insight into the period. In Say What I Am Called, Dieter Bitterli takes a fresh look at the riddles by examining them in the context of earlier Anglo-Latin riddles. Bitterli argues that there is a vigorous common tradition between Anglo-Latin and Old English riddles and details how the contents of the Exeter Book emulate and reassess their Latin predecessors while also expanding their literary and formal conventions. The book also considers the ways in which convention and content relate to writing in a vernacular language. A rich and illuminating work that is as intriguing as the riddles themselves, Say What I Am Called is a rewarding study of some of the most interesting works from the Anglo-Saxon period.
